She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: The Retreat (2022)
Funny show despite all the negative comments
This show is a tongue-in-cheek comedy. People who have down voted the show were probably expecting more superhero action. I see it as great social commentary. The writing is not top-notch but I still look forward to each episode. From what I have read, She-Hulk stays true to the comic books. If this is not your cup of tea (or kale smoothie) then go on to your other mindless action shows. They are really defining Jen's character and many can relate to her human existence. This episode shows that she has a love/hate relationship with her Hulk self. The original Hulk comics were inspired by the original story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It is an exploration of our own human nature where we wear different masks for different situations and how we try to come to terms with them.
However, the most important thing is to have fun with the show. Don't take this show (or any other superhero show) too seriously.
Killing Eve: I Have a Thing About Bathrooms (2018)
This doesn't make any sense.
I like this show so far. The cat and mouse aspect is very interesting. But there is one major flaw with this episode:
Why the hell does Eve go back to her home when she knows that the assassin and the organization she works for knows where she lives!!! I get that they wanted a face-to-face confrontation but anyone with any sense would have stayed away from their home and arranged for themselves and their loved ones to go to a safe house!
Is Eve wanting to set herself up for this? What does she know about the assassin that we, the audience, do not know? Perhaps following episodes will reveal this?
Gisaengchung (2019)
A remarkable film! This will surprise you, shock you, touch you.
This film explores the relationships between the haves and the have-nots. The tension that builds towards the end of the film kept me on the edge of my seat. The acting and direction is superb. And the story will have you thinking about the film for days. I highly recommend this as I feel it is one of the best films, not only of the year, but of the decade. I can see why it was nominated and won several awards, including Oscars for best picture and directing.
Schitt$ Creek: Our Cup Runneth Over (2015)
I did not laugh once
I heard that this show won many Emmys. A friend said they loved it. I hope it gets better because I did not find anything funny. Schadenfreude is they key here perhaps? It reminds me of Avenue 5 with rich people thrown into a bad situation who bicker about trivialities. So far, this show is not my cup of tea. I will give it a couple more episodes.
Avenue 5 (2020)
The worst writing and a waste of good acting talent.
I have enjoyed other sci-fi comedies such as Red Dwarf and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This show is a steaming pile compared to those. I have tried to watch the first 3 episodes and find it awful. I know it is meant to be social satire but the constant bickering and yelling will get on your nerves. I am surprised that HBO gave this a green light. I am not sure which show the other reviewers were watching when they gave this high ratings. I might watch another couple of episodes but I doubt if my opinion will change. (update: it gets worse. One episode has human excrement being dumped into space. This show should have gone with it.)
Westworld (2016)
The most outstanding science fiction series on TV. Period!
I saw the original Westworld movie back in 1973. That was great. This series is so much better. It explores deep philosophical issues regarding the human condition by using the metaphor of robotics. If you are a fan of Isaac Asimov's robot series of books, you will find this TV series equally fascinating. Every episode reveals more of the ideas about what it means to be human. The development of the theory of the bicameral mind allows us to question the very notion of consciousness. If you want to discover more about how the brain works, I highly recommend the book "Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain" by David Eagleman. I read this at the same time I saw Westworld. Are we really what we know when we are conscious? How many decisions do we make automatically without conscious thought? When it has been said that we only use 10% of our brain, I believe that what is meant is that we are only aware of 10% of what the brain actually does. Our consciousness is only the "tip of the iceberg". The only drawback as I write this review is that the second season of Westworld may be over a year away. Regardless, it will be worth the wait.
Hornblower: The Even Chance (1998)
Waiting to view
Another commentator wrote:
"First of all, a note about the American titles for this mini-series: what's wrong with you people? Can't you leave a title alone? Or do you think your crowd is so dumb, they wouldn't understand the title that the makers gave it? Why did you have to change "The Even Chance" into "The Duel", for instance (and the other titles as well)? Translating a foreign title is one thing. Altering (and totally ruining) an existing title is something else."
Please do not blame Americans for making changes to movie titles alone. Many films have their titles changed for marketing reasons. Back in 1981, I was on an underground platform in London that had a poster for the American film with Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt called "Eyewitness"; but the London tile was "The Janitor". How strange! Maybe they changed it because another film at the time had the same name? Or perhaps this new name sounded more "American" to British ears.
Also, about how this was not marketed well in the US, it may be due to some marketing director assuming that US audiences don't appreciate British TV very well. You must also understand that many Americans do not understand many British accents and have a hard time understanding these foreign dialects. I know from my own experience as a Canadian- American living in New Zealand that it takes a while to understand not only the accents, but also the slang words.
Regardless, I am looking forward to renting this series, as it has been highly recommended by my sister (American) who LOVED every episode and wish they would show it again on American TV.
Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)
Interesting technical trivia
When I attended film school at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles back in 1977, Gene Polito, the cinematographer for the film, was one of our instructors. He showed the film to our class and asked us to note if we noticed anything technically unusual about it. Afterwards he revealed that the lead actor, Eric Braden, dubbed all of his lines after the filming. Apparently the producers thought his accent sounded too German and wanted it toned down, more American.
