half way decent 80's slasher with a little more gore
19 September 2006
I'm a fan of 80's slasher films and I was a bit pleased with the fact that this film let out a little more gory scenes than your usual 80's slasher films do with the impact of a killing coming and then cut the scene right then, this film let it on through with the killing as well as the gore. It starts out that a local grocery store is about to be bulldozed and the store will soon have to go out of business. The store is stalked by a killer who is somewhere in the store and the workers go on a chase to catch the killer. This movie can be slow moving at times but it has it's moments of suspense that keep you interested and is well worth watching till the end where there is a twist. I recommend this movie for most 80's viewers of rare 80's slashers.

Shatter Dead (1994)

really bad road warrior zombie film
19 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie wouldn't be as bad if it just had a half way decent leading actress in it. All through this movie I had to look a pathetic looking vagabond wandering around zombie town searching for a place that had non-dead existing humans left. I still couldn't understand why two half way good looking guys even considered this woman good looking. Anyway....This story starts off as Susan finishes her grocery shopping and is soon attacked by a group of zombies with the most unconvincing makeup that wouldn't even be fit for trick or treating on Halloween. This makeup looks as if it were bought at your local Dollar Store and slapped on a few innocent cheap paying bystanders. And then there is the Preacher who for what reason I don't know is in this movie steals Susans car and leaves her alone to fend for herself. She then shacks up at a local house where there are more ugly people like her living there and the house is soon invaded by a man dressed as Howard Sterns character Fart Man (they couldn't have that much originality so they they had to borrow from none other than Howerd Stern) who then shoots up the place and all the zombies are dead. I did think that the baby incident was a little gross but laughable as I watched a plastic doll being breast fed in a bloody bathtub. I do not recommend this film at all to anyone unless you cannot afford a doctor to cure you of your insomnia or that you have the need to loose weight by laughing so much.

started off good, but left off boring
13 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Johnny Depp was hot in this movie, no lie. This movie started off as an interesting movie, I figured that it was well worth the rent as I watched Johnny do nothing but drink and play around with women. But the downfall in this movie is when he met the actress, at this point it went downhill because first of all she was not that attractive looking in the first place to picture love scenes with her and sexy Johnny Depp and this is basically what the rest of the movie consisted of was him and her. I would have rather seen him drunk during the movie. He ends up drinking himself towards his early demise and the actress had little or nothing to do with him other than use him for his teaching her more talent and sex. This movie I would not recommend and not one of his best.

Unhinged (1982)

pchycological thriller worth a look
30 December 2005
This movie should be along with the cult classics, it's a pchycological thriller involving a demented mother and her daughter and somewhere during the movie a mentally disabled son. A group of girls are caught during a storm when their car wrecks and are soon brought to a house of the old lady and her daughter and soon discover their strange relationship. This movie is so full of curved balls you can't figure out just who the killer is in this movie that leads to the end of the travelers lives. One thing that was not explained was the weird way the old lady acted during the dinner table staring at silver salt and pepper shakers or whatever they were, which was one of the many strange things she did. There were a few strange scenes in the movie; why would somebody just sit in front of a piano and listen to this loony toon play the piano playing checkers? But it's all worth the watch as the end climaxes and the whole movie just throws me for a loop. Well worth a watch if you like strange, spooky thunderstorm type movies.

worth a watch at least
9 November 2005
Something about those 80's horror movies that gets me is the killer is almost always dressed in some animal costume. This movie is well worth a watch, but I wouldn't watch it again. The story line is dull and it took me three days in watch it in between stop and re-wind and play. But what I liked the most about this film is the reveling of the killers identity came as a surprise to me. It had you guessing and it wasn't predictable just who the killer could be; it could be a number of people in the film. I bought this movie mostly because of Hal Halbrook playing in it and I do enjoy a little cheesy acting in my 80's movies. It's a good movie for those into "Friday13th" type of movies but not worth it if you only have but so much money with you to rent videos at your local video store.

Funny and Entertaining
17 July 2005
I liked this movie, it's not your typical vampire horror movie where all the vampire does is go around feeding on the blood of strangers where this movie is about a vampire that looks as if he is trying to look like a sexy vampire but instead with his hair in almost dreads and homeless shabby clothes, dried up skin and ticking strange facial expressions I can't tell if he's supposed to be a human or beast. He looks as if he's spent too many days in the sun and has almost dried up and came back to life again. He meets up with this waitress at a donut shop that looks almost like him, a across between man and beast with scary eyebrows. The best scene is when he's taking a bath and decides to have sex with her in her sleep. He see's her on a regular basis and forgets about another lady that he also had an affair with decades ago. He finds a friend, a taxi driver who almost get's beat up and the man moves in with him and finds out that he's a vampire. The story continues where the vampire is afraid of dying and this is why he continues to life all these years. The vampire plays a sympathetic character as we feel emotionally sorry for him as he drags himself and others into his personal life. I would watch this movie but beware of the fact that it's not your typical blood, flesh and gut's vampire movie but if your with a date and you have popcorn, rent this one, you'll enjoy it.

Uncle Silas (1989)

Gothic drama at it's best
30 June 2005
I look at this movie more as a drama than a horror movie because I did not see a whole lot of scariness in this movie but I did love the acting all except the kissing of Maude and her uncle Sylas....gross, I'd rather kiss snails than kiss his lips. That part of the movie made me sick. But I loved the acting of the evil governess. It made me think of the movie "Flowers in the Attic" of the character of the evil grandmother. But I never figured out just what was wrong with her uncle. Why we went into bouts of insanity and then all the sudden calm down and look at everyone as if they were mad. It made me feel for the characters because each one played their part excellent. The ending of the movie was a big let down though. I did not expect this movie to end that way. But it is a good movie if you like Gothic movies. I even see some ideas taken from "Dracula" in this movie.

Ghost Story (1981)

Good story but occasionally tiresome
30 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This story had a good plot to it about four elderly men that share a deadly secret concerning a young woman that they met 50 years ago. After all this time, the young woman returns to seek revenge on the men. This story occasionally made me nod off during the movie in the middle of tiring elevator music and the ever so consistent thunder storms. But it is well worth the wait in the end when we find out just who the mystery woman is that keeps plaguing the old men in their dreams and interfering in a young man's life. The most of what I liked in this film was the suspense in which the young woman appears to the men just before their deaths. The special effects were something. Every time I heard her call out to them I would think "Not that face again." But it was a good movie, I just wish that the pace was not as slow or the acting not as tiresome. And what I also liked about the movie was the flashback of the 20's, very authentic as well as the costumes being original.

Decent horror movie
22 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this movie, it was not at all like the original "Toolbox Murders" made in 1978 staring Cameron Mitchell in which I liked better than this one but I was also relieved that it was not like the original but I do think that the title and original theme of a maniacal killer that goes around from apartment to apartment killing it's tenants was taken from the original. I liked the creepy looking goth type janitor; he was the only reason I kept watching the movie. The ending of the movie in which we figure out who the killer actually was was a big disappointment. Common....a baby being born to a dead mother? Nice twist but I was like "what?" When I did find out who the killer was. It had it's times with suspense and the usual goriness that Tobe Hooper has in most of his movies. It was a good movie to watch but I wouldn't own it or call it one of my favorites.

Pretty strange movie....
14 June 2005
This movie begins where a lady living in England with her father is tormented by the memories of her childhood as an illiterate struggling to read. Her father teases her and nags her about going to school and learning how to read so that she can get a job. The lady, Eunice ends up going to America instead and becomes a housekeeper for a wealthy doctor and his family. Eunice learns how to manipulate people into getting what she wants because she cannot read and becomes a living nightmare for the family. She soon befriends a local church going lady and finds comfort in meeting someone just as crazy and insane as she is. The two become like a Bonny and Clyde team and take on the doctor and his family for revenge. I liked this movie, but it was not a movie that I would remember or even rent again. But it is worth a watch but only if there are no other horror movies your interested in on the shelf.

Fun and Educating Movie
3 June 2005
I liked this movie, the acting and adventurous music in the background made the movie look more interesting as the story went on. This movie takes place in 15th century....Italy.....I believe because of the "Romeo and Juliet" type of costumes worn, as a leader of a rouge group lead by Rutger Hauer go off in search of adventure and whatever comes their way. They soon are lead to an old castle where the inhabitants are killed off or chased away by the group as they fall by the dark face of the plague and a bunch of warriors that want to find Rauer and take back the princess that was captured by the group earlier in the story. The movie tells a tale of medieval times that were not as glamorous but filled with false spiritual beliefs during those times when religious leaders were taken the title from everything from doctors to leaders and making decisions on life and death resulting from plague. This movie was was delightful to watch and I would recommend anyone that has in interest in this period to watch it. The only drawback that I had with the movie was with Jinnifer Jason Leigh's terrible and wooden acting. They could have chosen someone better than her.

Bad Movie
3 May 2005
This movie threw me a curve, I bought it thinking that it would be somewhat in the likes of "Fun House" or "Hell Night" so I was prepared for a good horror movie but what I got was something totally different. After the first five minutes or so, I thought that this movie was made by Trauma or maybe a home video made for a group of friends that decided that they were bored and wanted to make a little extra cash. The whole cast took part in the production, directing, editing and all other credits in the film. I guess this movie was so bad that they couldn't even hire decent producers. This movie was not even scary at all and it was not even funny. They had an old man wearing a grocery bag over his head telling people's fortunes and a killer in a clown suit. All the sudden the actors turn possessed by the evil of the house that they all go mad and try to change what's fake into reality. They find out what's going on and they all try to leave. And the special effects in this film are lame. You can just picture a wire hanging from the limbs of these people as they dangle in the air like puppets. And it had one of the worst endings in any cheesy horror movie. Fans of Alan Ornsby might like this one but not me.

The Demon (1981)

pretty bad movie (spoiler)
3 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the worst horror movies about serial killers that I have seen in a long time. A man kills a family and the father hires a phycic detective to find out who the killer is. The phycic happens to be none other than the king of B-rated horror but Cameran Mitchell (spelling) who turns up with nothing more than visions of the killer in a lady's mask. They could have done more with his character and would have made the movie even more cheesier but when he was popped off by the fathers wife because she got fed up with no leads from this guy the film went down and I soon had to fight to keep from falling asleep. The background elevator music made me want to sleep even more. We have the killer who is a nobody in this movie, just a single perverted guy that likes to do push-ups and look at dirty pictures and why he wears that silly lady's mask I haven't a clue as to why because the film doesn't talk about why. And by the end of the film I was glad it was over.

The WORST special effects that I have ever seen!!!
24 February 2005
When I went in the video store to look for a horror video I found this piece of flop that unfortunately blew me away with the words "the best special effects" and I decided to give it a try. Boy was I wrong! This movie was more laughable with it's "special effects" than scary. I could just imagine the poorly paid crew and staff pushing furniture across the floor and moving paintings on the other side of the wall in the midst of a demonic presence. A handicaped woman who looses her handicaped during her demonic attacks suddenly becomes a tool for Satan and all we see is poor acting and laughable hallucinations borrowed from movies such as "Rosemary's Baby", "Exorcist" and numerous other titles that tried to copy them as well. This is one of the worst of demonic horror movies that I have seen; slobbering all over herself like she has rabies and the mocking of sexual scenes with the Devil. Give me a break.

This has got to be the worst horror movie I have ever seen!!
15 February 2005
This movie was AWFUL! The summary on the back of the cover was much more entertaining reading than watching the movie itself. This movie is about a bunch of rafters that end up stranded in an old "ghost town" that looks to me like more of a set of a cheap western than a haunted ghost town. One by one the lame characters are killed off by an unseen killer. The only characters other than the helpless rafters are two bikers and an old man riding on his horse with his dog that claims to have been a sailer from the year 1890 something. This movie is just plain awful and I do not recommend that anyone should rent this movie. It has lame killings, low gore and stupid pathetic acting and on top of all that a horrible ending!

god movie, but somewhat confusing
22 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know if I was not paying to much attention here or that it was the movie itself that threw me off but there were a few things in this movie that I just could not understand. This movie did have some good acting in it, although I do not care much for Rosanna Arquettes (spelling) acting. Betty Davis did do a good job in her acting as she always does in her horror roles but there are a few things that questioned me: What are blind men doing listening to audio tapes of Donald Pleasance? What really happened to Grace? I mean we see the doctor with x-rays of a mongoloid with a huge head and supposedly 7'0" body and nobody knows where she is buried? The old preacher has a coffin that supposedly has her remains and when we open it all we see is corn? And what are these people supposed to be? Christians that practice pagan festivals? Can they make up their minds what religion they want to worship? And why do we have the blond guy as the "God Sacrifice" to the harvest? What was so special about him? And what happened to his wife? Did she commit suicide or was she "done in" as well as the man that got his tongue cut out? Good movie but a lot of holes.

Cathy's Curse (1977)
3/10
Not one of my favorites, but not bad either
13 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the many videos that I have seen containing possessed dolls enter innocent young children. It is not a good film and one that I would not recommend for my collection of horror movies, even if it was only $1.00 but I would recommend watching it at least once anyway. I cannot help but just laugh at this movie, some of the main characters reminding me of the cast of "Saturday Night Live" with Will Forte as the dad and Mya Rudolf as the mom. The old man getting drunk with the little girl was the most hilarious thing that I have ever seen. He seemed to be more of a perverted old man and the little girl a seductive teenager and the scene was all to surreal. It had it's moments of being slow paced and then somebody would get killed off and the movie would jump back up again but some of the death scenes in here like the old man throwing up whatever it was he ate and then the movie cut off from there and we find out later that he died from vomiting. I did not like the killing of the dog though, mainly because I hate the killing of animals but mostly whenever we are introduced into the movie with a family pet do we know that the poor thing is the first to go. This movie reminds me of one of those slow and boring British movies and not made in Canada although I liked the fact that the movie took place in the snow and cold weather, sorta like how "The Shining" did. Watch it for laughs but nothing more that that.

OK movie and worth renting
28 November 2004
This movie is for pure mediocre horror entertainment and nothing more. I bought this film simply because of the great scream queen Karen Black but she really did not fit in with this movie at all, she was as ditzy and goofy as a blond bimbo in this movie that through the whole movie she just did not have a clue as to what was going on her daughters bedroom . Her acting was wooden and the change of style of wigs she wore in the movie, what was the purpose of that? And the way she acted moments before she left her daughters bedroom after having a nightmare when she just stubbornly said "It was just a bad dream....mow go to bed" was the strongest line she ever said in the movie. Another reason why I bought this movie was for Yvonne DeCarlo's acting in this movie whom is known to play so pretty flop horror movies in her past. She was more colorful than Black was in this movie. This movie had sorta of an 80's feel to it. The look of the characters playing in this movie were taken from the 80's and if i hadn't known he year that it was made I could have sworn that it was made in 1985 which is why I liked this movie was the 80 feel to it. The "Goth" chick Meagan looked more like a washed out Boy George than the creepy goth looking character that she was supposed to play and it looked more funny than Gothic. There were some pretty gory scenes in this movie that are worth checking out like the scene with Meagan and her dad in her room and the lunchroom scene were pretty gross. It's worth a one time renting but after that, pretty forgettable movie.

Confusing....but good Gothic horror
17 November 2004
I liked this movie.....Boris Karloff portrayed himself well as being the ghoulish and gory character that he always played in his horror movies with lines like "You think I"m mad don't you?" But Jack Nickelson just did not fit in with this movie at all with his lines as if he were reading from Q cards than acting on his own were monotoned and getting nowhere. The theme of the movie was somewhat confusing though with the bird and the old lady and the girl and a guy named Eric there are so many plots, twists and turns that only till the ending do we really know what each character represents and by then we're are all confused and have to go back to the beginning of the movie. The setting of the movie is great with the castle and it's old settings and the crypt and the secret doorways, kinda reminds me of old Hammer movies. Check this one out, it's entertaining if anything else for those that appreciate the Gothic type of horror.

really creepy film
5 November 2004
This is one of Argento's most creepiest films. I remember watching the commercials for this film in the movie theater with the skeleton combing her hair and turning around and jumped out of my seat as a kid. What comes across during this film is Suzy gets involved in an almost Alice in Wonderland like surrounding involving witchcraft and murder in which the people that are running the place are involved in. There were a few disappointments though in the movie and one of them being the fake special effects in the film like blood looking to much like blood from a paint can and the fact that we didn't actually see the killer killing the victims, there was just a hand coming from behind the shadows and the corners doing all this killing. The killers are obvious in the movie sense we don't see to many "nice" people introduced in the film, their characters were stiff and to the point and it gave it away as to what their intentions were for Suzy to be rid of. But this is a vary good movie and vary creepy as it plays along the characters and the music in this film makes it even more creepy.

The Children (1980)

Another low-budget thriller involving evil kids
5 October 2004
I remember this one way back when, on one of those late night movies. It's another horror movie involving innocent children that somehow were contaminated by the mistakes of mischievous adults. A nuclear power plant leaks and a bus load of kids drive through a cloudy mist and turn into evil zombie kids with painted on black fingernails. The only way to kill these kids is by cutting off their hands and hearing them growl. It's a low-budget movie and there isn't much to expect from this movie, everybody that they touch turns into radioactive mush. Children that walk up to their parents and give them the hug of their lives, that was worth watching. The soundtrack is what brought my attention, something like "Friday 13th" or somebody fooling around with a sound effect machine. I can see that this is where "Children of the Corn" got their idea from. The only problem with this movie is that there were not enough evil kids, maybe 4 at the most and not enough killings. I think with a full bus load of kids and a whole community of people in town this movie would have been more of a hit, but I did like it to say the least.

Stupid and just plain laughable!
20 September 2004
This movie is so stupid that I want my $2.99 back that I paid for!! First this movie starts off with a bunch of wooden actor geeks with fill in talent like they got picked off the street somewhere because the "real" actors either did not show up because of the laughable script or they just couldn't get anybody desperate enough to do this movie! The music in this movie is enough to put you to sleep, flute music made for faerie's dancing in the wilderness wouldn't even be good enough for this movie! And the guy dressed up as Satan looks like he's all dressed up in a K-Mart Halloween special costume! There are no dead scenes except a few lame scenes. When I saw what the terrible killers looked like in those bath robes with Nosferatu faces I just laughed! This is what the whole town is supposed to be running away from once a year! This movie is one of the worst demonic movies I have ever seen. Avoid this one!

Creepy as heck (spoilers)
6 September 2004
Warning: Spoilers
This movie creeped me out when I remember it being on HBO when I was young. The scene that I remember the most was the photographer that had his head cut off from an oncoming truck. I look at that scene now and realize how fake it looks. The other part I remember was the lady that hung herself from the window of the house. this whole movie is creepy, one of my favorites of the demon possession era. And Damian seems like just a normal little child under the influence of adults that come into his life trying to "protect" him. I don't think that he was ever really aware of who or what he really was. This movie grips you into it's world and makes you think about the characters involved and helps you to follow into the story. And the music was creepy enough the whole theme of this movie is worth watching.

It's just a shame that the sequels were so terrible and did not follow into what this movie was all about.

OK vampire flick
6 September 2004
This movie was not all that great and one that I wouldn't recommend checking out if your a serious vampire flick fan. I thought that sense it had Duane jones staring as the main character that it would have at least a little potential in it but what i saw most of his acting was boring dialogue and not enough enthusiasm in his character. Jones gets stabbed by a man that later committed suicide and left jones a living vampire. Jones then sucks the blood of the man and keeps him in the freezer in fear that if he is caught that he will be found guilty of the man murder. Soon afterward we see visions of an African queen somehow in control of Jones and leads him to kill more and more people. Wee see Jones envisioning being at a church in order to free himself of this curse of being a vampire and his fate is left after that scene. The woman on the other hand is the wife of the man that committed suicide and ends up staying at jones place and finds her husbands body in the freezer and finds out that after she has fallen in love with Jones that there is more to this man than she cares to know about. Jones wants to make her immortal just as he is. This movie is unmemorable, slow and boring it tends to want to sway to fans of such movies as "Blacula" but falls to do so.

One of Walken's worst films!
12 August 2004
This movie is more deceiving than ever, using a suspenseful looking actor like Walken to play in this piece of junk made it look like he had nothing better to do than play a boring role like this one! And the fact that the movie was supposed to be about some witch and you really don't see that until almost the end of the movie but meanwhile you have to sit and watch this boring film while it gets, or tries to get to the meaning of the point and you have to go through this whole trail of boring actors and actresses thinking the whole time of how you passed off another movie and decided on this one and how you have just waisted your money just makes the whole point of time useless sitting there. I'd rather watch cartoons for goodness sakes. Leave this one alone, please!
