Hannibal (2001)
9/10
A very sophisticated thriller
18 April 2001
Warning: Spoilers
As a fan of Hannibal Lecter and brave Clarice Starling, I couldn't wait to watch Hannibal. The Silence of the Lambs is one of my favourite films and I thought that crew - Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster and Jonathan Demme - was perfect. SPOILER ALERT Well, now I think I was wrong. Julianne Moore made Clarice Starling look sexy and intelligent at the same time. And Ridley Scott made a more fragile Hannibal Lecter, that preferred to cut his hand than try some McGyver skills like open the handcuffs with a knife. Although I missed the suffering eyes of Jodie Foster, Julianne Moore did the right job between the flesh and the brains. An older Anthony Hopkins is also a more sophisticated serial-killer. Together, they made a very close to brilliance thriller.

Flowers dying in the sun
17 July 2000
There are no reasons in this movie and this makes it special. We know from the beginning, like in an ancient greek tragedy, that something -in this case, a massive suicide- is going to happen and we don't find, even with our efforts, a reason that could explain the suicidal tendencies of those beautiful and angelical sisters. Lisbon sisters were like flowers dying in the sun. So simple as this. Sofia Coppola filmed with passion and simplicity. All the actors, specially Turner, Woods and Dunst understood what she wanted and the meaning of their characters. And these are the reasons why this beautiful film is in my top ten, in a place I can define...because there are no reasons.

Amazing Kim Basinger!
14 July 2000
When I read all the reviews I could about this movie, including specialized magazines, I thought to myself that Kim Basinger had a bad dream after the great LA Confidential, one of my favourite movies of the 90's.

Now that I've seen it, I believe that 'I Dreamed of Africa' was not well understood. This is a different movie, the story was written to show dramatic and common scenes of Kuki's life, trying to reveal that all dreams can bring nightmares. And Kim shows us that she's a mature actress, not only a sex-symbol. She had no glamour in Africa, but her sensuality is so natural that I thought to myself that she was the most beautiful animal in Africa.

This film deserved more positive reviews than it had. It's not worse or better than 'Out Africa'. Only different. And this difference makes it fabulous.
