FM (1978)
Think of FM as a time capsule.
Absolutely void of any semblance to a comedy, FM fails to deliver anything more than than the soundtrack offers. A weak plot, a pathetic climax, and cardboard characters force this career-killing turkey of a movie to the discount rack. To enjoy this movie, just think of it as a time capsule. Linda Ronstadt was thin and at her peak. Tom Petty was just breaking out with Breakdown. REO Speedwagon had yet to be accused of High Infidelity. There is a certain novelty in viewing a snapshot of 1978 with endless shelves of vinyl albums and tape cartridges. The FM soundtrack was and still is one of the best 70's pop/rock compilation albums. Due to legal bickering between record labels, the soundtrack has only recently made its way to compact disc. Save your money by renting the movie and buying the soundtrack, preferably on vinyl.
Event Horizon (1997)
Or, how poor writing can kill a descent sci-fi film.
One word epitomizes the writing calibre of this film: Corpsicle. This particular word was supposed to be used in the context of clever dialogue in a moment of comic releif; however, it fails miserably, just like the movie's remaining dialogue. Moreover, the overabundant use of the "f" word loses it's desired affect. In fact, the dialogue sounds quite juvenile if we are to believe the characters are scientists and space travel professionals. It's too bad that the graphical and aural effects cannot be matched with a descent script.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Technically Brilliant
This film deserves a second look for one to really appreciate the brilliant lighting and photography detail that is typically Kubrick. The subliminal colors, the warm overexposed lighting, the dramatic spot lighting, the hypnotic ballroom camera pans are all masterfully crafted. The film industry won't be the same without you Stanley.
