Wagons East (1994)
Better than they say, really....
20 October 2001
B'leve it or not, most people said this was a sad, sad, movie. Well, I'm here to tell ya I really liked it.

My former teacher reccomended it to my mother....she said she thought I would like it.... so my Mom brought it home, ostensibly for my little sister, and I watched it that night while everyone else was gone, because I really like John Candy and I recently fell in love with Richard Lewis (in "Once Upon a Crime" believe me it doesn't happen often) Anyway, I wasn't particularly expecting a funny movie, but I liked the premise, and then it started and I about died laughing. Candy is distinctly uncomfortable during it, something understandable, and the movie definitely pulls no punches. But even so, all the actors had such great comic presence.... I'm not usually a laugh out loud person, and so the only parts I laughed at was the revelation of Harlow's secret (I';m no snitch, I won't tell you what it is) and ensuing conversation, and the Big Tough General Larchmont asking for a bedtime story, and Lewis's conversation with his kids....amounting to the sort of things that would go on in a regular, modern-day car ride when you have a son and a daughter. But the biggest surprise: Lewis himself. Here we have a guy with a big chin and buggy eyes, who always appears as himself, constantly has shoulder-length greasy hair, and one of the oddest smiles since the days of Chico Marx.... and here we have me, laughing at him. Go figure. I love Chico Marx too.

This is supposed to be good

So I really liked the other Hallmark/NBC presentations I've seen. This was a little erratic. But being a fairly optimistic person I'd rather concentrate on the good parts. Here's a big one: Daniel Betts, who played Mickey (a leprechaun) and is a sort of Irish Brad Pitt. Here's another one: Colm Meany, who played Mickey's father Seamus Muldoon (another leprechaun, duh) and was hilarious. Randy Quaid was stretching it. I like him when he's funny, but when he's attempting to do the Byronic hero I write him off--- luckily he doesn't do that very often. The human plot was definitely boring, especially when compared to that going on in faery-land, but that's okay. The dialogue was frequently bright and sharp, with some laugh-out-loud lines. And if you're planning to watch it--- look out for the Thorn Tree scene. For the romantic part of me, it was the greatest.

The Kid (2000)
Really...

.......really great! So weird for Bruce Willis..... but great nonetheless. I used to dislike him because all he did was swear in those mindless action movies. But here I realized he isn't that bad....he CAN act and he CAN be funny. As a matter of fact he reminded me a little of an overgrown Michael J. Fox. But what really made me love this movie is the fact that as soon as I discover that this revered Hollywood bigshot is really okay.... here comes along an eight year old kid and basically throws him off the screen. I LOVE IT! As an actress, I'd like to work with both Willis and Spencer Breslin in the future...send me a screenplay! As a writer, I'll probably write my own!

Hey, Kids, its a shirt, not a vest.

Some people said "boring" some said "terrific and funny", but nobody mentioned being surprised. I was. Not so much as by the story line, but what came with it.... Think about it. Ever said the phrase "I am a meat popsicle" before? Say it out loud. It's funny. And try asking people if they're "green". That's funny, too. So, in other words, this is a new kind of alien movie... it has alien writing, too. Just as a sider, though, how come Korben Dallas (Willis) displayed a ready sense of humor in the first (like when that guy tried to rob him....the one with the landscape hat) and then, when the funny man (Chris Tucker) came on, he was so stiff? Why is that? Hello are you there? Anybody out there?

October Sky (1999)

This movie was so terrific....words fail me and words are my way of life...no, not really, I'm just being dramatic. But I love this movie. I bought the book too, and although they changed a lot of it to make it more poignant and such, it was still Homer Hickam Jr. whom I admire so much. Course, I feel like I admire him more now that I know his background... something about the script, the way this movie was made, and probably most of all Laura Dern, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Chris Cooper, makes everybody feel like they, too, can reach for the stars and catch one. The rocket boys were my favorite characters, naturally. They worked so well together it really seemed like they had known each other forever. You can tell that everybody worked on this and gave it their all. I'm graduating school next year, and I hope I can do as much as the laborers here did. One more comment, to spoil the all-too-grand foregoing thoughts.....great accents, guys. I wish everybody back in the South talked like you all did.
