Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
The real Multiverse of Madness
This is one of the most unique movies I have ever seen. Love it or hate it it addresses the idea of a "multiverse" and the ramifications of decisions made in one's life, better than any other film I have seen before it. Yes, sometimes I found the humor a bit over the top and thought at certain times things got redundant but still for a fun, thought provoking, must see in theaters film, I truly enjoyed the experience.
The Secret (2006)
Basically Birds of a feather, Flock together
I want to just express my opinion on this movie, and seprate it from my opinion on the theory.
I will do this in three parts.
First what I agreed with as far as the main theory. Second what I did not agree with as far as the main theory. Third my opinion of this theory as a movie.
First I do believe that the law of attraction is a viable idea. Once humans have met the basic needs of food, shelter and security then the use of positive thought to help guide the person towards what they want is a good concept.
Second even though I do agree with the premise this is no great secret, Seek and ye shall find, If you believe it you can achieve it, Sound familiar?
This philosophy is nothing new and very far from a secret. They even say during this film that the three greatest words ever spoken were "Follow Your Bliss". So wouldn't that be the GREATER secret?
You can get book, tapes and dvds with this same premise for years. Just check out, Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, Les brown among others.
Finally, "THE SECRET" as a documentary lacks greatly. It brings up ideas and principles but never fleshes out the how. It kinda shows the A to C with no B. You think it and Poof it appears. I guess this will be in the sequel "THE SECRET 2: THE EXPLANATION!"
Also as far as a movie it is just a mish mash of allusions. Within FIVE minutes of the film they state what "THE SECRET" is. After that it is just a rehash for the next hour plus. Visually, it was like they said lets take this little grain of truth throw it together with Da Vinci Code conspiracy, A little Matrix, its all in your mind ideas, Wall Street, Greed is good mentality, and 3D graphics and hey we have a movie...no what you have is a marketing ploy.
I would have love to have seen some of the theories they had, such as it being passed down through the ages, acted out to see exactly how and why this was hidden and by whom. Naming historical names and pinning this theory on them just does not work for me.
But, IF this brings the idea of the "Law of Attraction" to people who are unfamiliar with it, then more power to the makers.
Lost in Translation (2003)
More than this
I usually shy away from Slice of life movies. They have offer no real resolution and to me it is one of the hardest genre to pull off convincenly.
But this film does so superbly.
After multiple screening I have come to realize that there is a lot more going on underneath the surface than what is first apparent. Bob Harris (Played magnificently by Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) come to a point in each of there lives when they realize there must be more than what they are living. Even though no solution of each characters problems at the end,it seems that each realizes that life is made up of moments and sharing with people during those moments.
I was left feeling that that each of their lives will be at least more bearable because of the time that they spent together.
A Face in the Crowd (1957)
Underrated Masterpiece!
If you think that the extend of Andy Griffith's acting ability is playing a good old boy sheriff or aging lawyer. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie. In it he shows the many shades of the character Lonesome Rhodes, pulling you in with his charm amd homespun philosophy until you realize that there is a snake hiding in that Downhome sheeps clothing.
I have watch this film many times and am always fascinated by the subtle hints early in the film to what he eventually reveals to the world.
a five star movie that was way ahead of it's time.
Never Kick a Woman (1936)
Olive Oyl..Ahead of her time?
IT is amazing looking back on this cartoon about Olive Oyl taking up boxing. It has taken many DECADES for the rest of society to catch up with this notion of women boxing.
Who would have thought that Olive Oyl was such a trailblazer.
