Mahler (1974)
Ken Russells Masterpiece and BAFTA Winner!
Mahler is the highlight of Ken Russells career. Renowned for his visual flair, Mahler achieves an elegant beauty and emotional depth not found in many of his feature films, while avoiding, mostly, his indulgent excesses.
By far his best composer biography (miles ahead of The Music Lovers or Lisztomania which both sink in their over the top depravity) Mahler is especially remarkable for the performance of the relatively unknown actress Georgina Hale - even though she won a BAFTA for this very role. Top marks to both director and actress.
Omnibus: Song of Summer (1968)
Sing Of Summer SHOCK! Russell with depth and compassion!
Ken Russell Song of Summer is a sweet and beautiful composer biopic that was made for television but seems better suited for the cinema.
In fact it is a better film than most of his theatrical releases (Maybe excluding my personal favorite Mahler), with sensitive performances, humour, and an affection for its protangonists. (I know what your thinking - no bloody corpses? Writhing nudes? Swirling visuals?) No there's not much of Russell's trademark shock tactics - but the film is all the better for it.
A film I deeply respect. Try and track down a copy and you won't be disappointed. 9/10.
Todo sobre mi madre (1999)
Pedro Almodovar's Masterpiece
All About My Mother is not only Almodovar's finest film but also the best film released in 1999.
Beautiful camera work, vivid set design, powerful performances and Almodovar's moving and intelligent script!
