The Mummy Returns (2001)
Sad waste of time and money
I usually try to find something positive in a movie but the complete lack of tension in acting and script do not leave much room for that in this case. Even the huge load of effects (in fact they might as well have shot the whole movie in a studio) fail to make impression when the quality starts to decline badly towards the end. The script is so full of clichés that one can shut his eyes in the middle of the film and be sure he won't miss one detail.
I think this movie gives a new meaning to those fine Van Damme films that we all love' so much. I can understand the financial arguments behind The Mummy Returns', where there's some easy cash lying around you better grab it, but a major studio should also keep in mind mental health of the poor viewer who might have to sit it through.
I propose a minute of silence in memory of those $98m that made the Mummy return
Scarface (1983)
Certainly not a masterpiece
I agree the film is a bit overrated. The script is not very strong and realistic. I'm sure criminal world is not that simple as it's pictured in this movie. Pacino tends to overplay his role and at times it's just merely funny when he tries to be real serious. I don't think the film is too long put there could be more content to fill the time. Still even though it's not a classic Scarface is strong enough to give it at least a try.
The Last Bullet (1995)
Surprisingly good under the circumstances
This film is a low budget TV production and that's how it should be taken. The main reason why it got my attention is the fact that the leading role is played by the Australian singer Jason Donovan. His performance is far from outstanding but it is still pretty acceptable. The action takes place during the last days of WWII in a jungle where Australian soldiers are looking for the last surviving Japanese warriors. It so happens that after an encounter between the enemies only one man both sides survives. The rest of the movie concentrates on the lonely battle of the two soldiers, looking to get rid of the other just to finally have a chance to return home to his family. One different aspect with the film is that there is really no good and bad guy. Both sides are equal, it is just the insanity of war that has put them against themselves. It is just unfortunate that the ending of the film goes a bit on the cheesy side (well frankly even much more than just a bit). So overall a quite ok film, why not watch it if you have a chance. 6/10
The Last Seduction (1994)
Maybe not quite that good...
Although Linda Fiorentino delivers above average performance it still isn't enough to save the weak script. The whole film is full of flaws and little stumbles making the watching not a very pleasant experience. The actions of Bridget Gregory and the reasons behind them are never really explained, frankly I couldn't understand whether the reasoning she gives us was meant to be a joke or was it really a sad attempt to justify her negativity. What I'm quite sure about is that Bill Pullman's character is indeed a comic relief of the film. The other male characters are written to be so dumb that you practically wish them to find their end as fast as possible. So in closing, you probably should watch this film only if you're a Linda Fiorentino fan, if not just pass it by... 4/10
