Mank (2020)
Great
Even though Oldman stole Burgess Meredith's voice. A bit like Daniel Day-Lewis stole John Huston's voice in the super-boring There Will Be Blood.,....................,...............,............................................
Better Call Saul: 50% Off (2020)
Erm, what
So this guy still lives and works in Albuquerque and reappears as Saul but noone goes "isn't that Jimmy McGill"?
The Two Popes (2019)
If Hopkins...
If Hopkins doesn't need a German accent, why didn't the director tell Pryce, with his wonderful voice, he didn't need to adopt that silly accent?
Shadowlands (1986)
Faultless
By far superior to the Hopkins (playing Hopkins again) version. Claire Bloom is impossibly right for the part
Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005)
More please!
I have an Unlimited ticket at my local cinema and have seen many good movies in the past 6 months - so far, History of Violence being my favorite. I have also sat through several tedious movies that were way too long (Howling Castle being the prime example) - but even Were Rabbit (which I loved) was 15 minutes too long. Good Night and Good Luck is quite the opposite...a movie that I wish had been LONGER. I could easily have sat through 20 more minutes of this movie, i) because I was loving it so much and ii) as I am 45, and not wishing to be patronising, I think that younger members of the audience could have done with a little more time to understand the underlying story more. My wife, for instance (41) didn't realise it was Eisenhower was he when shown. This is a first class movie of the genre that BBC can make at its best, and shows the link, very clearly, how concerns about freedom and the role of a free press (and a press that has the guts to have a position - which the BBC does not seem to, these days) is as true now as it was in the 1950's - clearly an issue Mr Clooney, whose stock has risen considerably with me after this movie, was intending to focus upon, even if obliquely. Well done to all concerned.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
One man's meat.....
For those of you who have lost one parent, especially your mother, this movie will resound heavily. I will go as far as to say that those who haven't lost a parent will not understand this movie as much as those that have. I know that sounds sentimental, but as perception is all, I will ask Messrs Kubrick and Spielberg, geniuses that they are, the honour of indulging me in the idea that David isn't just a robot, but a metaphor for all of us who seek to have one extra day with our mothers. Very few of us would not wish for it. This is a magical movie. It is a shame that so many fastidious movie goers analyse it so much. "It's a Wonderful Life" never got so analysed :-)
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Am I immune?
I am awfully sorry, but I was really hoping that Clones would be better than Menace and it wasn't. I thought it was 45 minutes too long, too dreary, too confusing and the action too concentrated at the end...and worst of all, I didn't care what happened. Oh...and that Anakin bloke really began to get on my nerves, especially as he was out-acted by the scenery. Sorry! I am 41 and maybe seeing Episode IV 25 years ago spoiled me!
