Büvös vadász (1994)
gun play but not for gun groupies
Not one of the movies that jumps at you, but one that resonates with your sense of destiny. Those of us who crave killing and other mind smut will probably quit watching early on. The plot hovers eerily between a postmodern present and occult fantasies of bygone centuries. The acting is OK, not the center of attention. The dazzling camera work, the musical mix (medieval, german romanticism, new wave etc.) and the wildly creative montage are what stirs you up in this film. I watched with skepticism at first, but by the end I knew I wanted to watch it a second time -- usually a good sign, particularly when the second viewing stimulates the mind even more.
Hideous Kinky (1998)
A movie that rewards you to the degree of your own insights
This film has all the qualities of an exquisite poem: the rhythm of feeling, the power of understated experience, the slender and subtle plot. Some elements of this story--the existential search for identity, the lack of obvious momentum, the subjective encounter with alternative civilisations etc.--are very much out of fashion at the moment, as is evident from several reviews. Poetry may be out of fashion for similar reasons, but probably not forever. I admire this film as a gesture of art, one that enriches the viewer without spelling out a heavy-handed individualistic message. I hope we will see more movies like this one.
Into Thin Air: Death on Everest (1997)
A clueless account and sad disservice to the cause of mountaineering
It is one thing for a film about the struggle for the world's summit to be filmed on Austrian snow slopes. It is quite a different matter to present team situations, issues of high altitude climbing and human behaviors in a totally dishonest manner, apparently in a desire to milk a genuine drama for any hollywood cliches it might yield. Crowds of people strung together along ridges screaming hysterically at each other. An embarrassingly clueless account and a sad disservice to the cause of mountaineering.
