The Last Bullet (1995)
wow what a surprise .....
i have just seen this film on movies for men channel on sky t.v. , i would have missed it but by luck i stumbled across it . i never even knew that jason donovan had made this movie ,but think he done a excellent job . i won,t spoil it buy telling the plot and ruining it for anyone , but if you like me enjoy war movies , especially the classics , then this movie will be a pleasant surprise for you . it is as you will see low budget , but the acting is great and the story very well thought out and engrossing , and it was not one that i could predict the end easily , which this day and age happens often , the action is quite bloody in places so not for watching with any children around really , but in a realistic way not just a gore fest for the sake of it , it is a realistic and powerful story and a little gem from our Australian cousins , i think they should be given a lot more credit for there movies especially when they really are this good , as i said before it is well worth a watch and far better than i thought it would be , i am now off to order it on DVD to add to my collection , i think you could do a lot worse for a good war story especially as good world war two movies are few and far between especially in the jungle warfare of borneo i would give it 8/10 .
The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006)
fact good or bad is still fact ........
as a Englishman with little or no idea of the troubles that arose in Ireland from my school years education in the u.k. i have to agree with many of our Irish friends across the sea , we as a nation are kept in the dark about the the darker sides of our empirism especially as regards our close neighbor's the Irish , and after reading many books and studying the subject with a great deal of interest [ researching my girlfriends Irish descent in cork ] i feel that ken roach has again made a movie that will in time be classed as a true movie classic . history and fact are indeed hard to face when it does not paint a rosy a picture as we would all like , but the facts will always come to light albeit if it takes many years and this film gives a viewer an idea why many neutral Irish citizens were driven to join and fight with the i.r.a. in those troubled years , due mainly to heavy handed tactics and the attitude from Britain is it no wonder that 80% of the Irish populace voted for the sinn fein in the elections in Ireland in 1918 general election , and our then government decided that they would not allow this , now even with my ltd political understanding this does not sound democratic to me .the most powerful part for me in this movie is after the treaty is signed and we see the disagreement with the terms of the treaty and where brother ended up turning against brother , and then seeing Irishman fighting Irishman in a terrible civil war . you must see this film and if it sparks an interest as it did with me to delve further then it has succeeded , the acting albeit mainly unknown actors shows that under masterful direction and with what in this day and age is a substantially low budget can still achieve an remarkable piece of work that will be remembered far far longer than some of the so called big budgeted movies of this year , by far for me the best movie of the year and the most moving , i recommend it highly .
Sole Survivor (1970)
what a film .... what a legacy ......
after reading the comments on this movie its a spooky feeling in itself they so many people have had the exact same reactions to the same film and from so many different places . i am 38 and can remember watching the film with my dad the first time , and being chilled and moved both at the same time , i saw it once more as a teenager and it lodged itself even deeper in my memory as the best supernatural/drama i had seen . why the hell has,nt this film been released on DVD ? it is far more worthy than most of the run of the mill B movie type dvds being released at the moment . thank heavens for E - BAY as this was where i managed to finally get a farely good copied to DVD version , and any version is better than none even though i hate and deplore piracy . and of course thank heavens for i.m.d.b. for giving me the chance to actually find out the title , which had eluded me for many years [ i followed Richard baseharts filmography ....] . perhaps we should try to contact Patrick Wayne and see if he can kick some studio butt and see if they realize the potential this movie still has , it has stood the test of time and has moved many people , how many so called top budget movies out now will have the same overpowering effect this movie has had on everyone who has posted their comments here ,and be so etched in there memories , bravo for all concerned with this classic , it goes to show class will ride the test of time , bring on the 2 disc special edition DVD , and lets hope no - one even tries to better this classic with a remake , it won,t work and would not do it justice ..... bring on the DVD version .... and soon .... please .....
