Game of Pleasure (1998)
Amateurish at best
I just finished watching "Game of Pleasure," and I couldn't be more disappointed, to be quite honest. I truly wanted to like this film; but for all my good intentions, I just can't. How a film could possibly be so bad--when is stars the incredible Tammy Parks and the ever-enthralling Jennifer Huss (two of the only good things this dreck offers)--is beyond my comprehension. Hip (circa 1965) camera angles (all handheld, apparently) and sub-par video quality (not unlike my uncle Stanley's vacation footage [why is it always dark indoors?]) serve to distract the viewer--thankfully-- from the hi-tech Scooby Doo plot. But don't get me wrong: "GoP" is honestly incredible at times...it's incredible they actually had a crew (since it seems less thought out than a highschool production of "You Can't Take It with You"), it's incredible they had a cast (since, apparently, they couldn't find ACTORS), and incredible that it ever got made at all (without bare breasts [and they were few...don't let them fool you by suggesting it's at all racy], it wouldn't have made a dime). I must admit I've learned a lesson or two from this film, though: 1) anyone can make a film, and 2) Fred Olen Ray is a freaking Orson Welles compared to GoP's helmsman, Dale Frantz. I'm sorry for the bile in this review; however, this film was so bad, it hurt...I just wanted to hurt it back.
Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984)
Tarzan Alive!
This is--as other reviewers have stated--the most accurate depiction of Burroughs' novel yet to be committed to film. The Great Apes are not chimps, and Tarzan is clearly one of them (although he does feel different): a real departure for Tarzan films. Miles O'Keefe might have the right look for the character; but it's hard to imagine anyone else giving the Ape-Man life, having seen Lambert in the role. He truly is convincing, and that's a rarity in "comic book" movies. A solid B+.
