Love Actually (2003)
All is forgiven
The opening/closing sequences of people greeting each other at the airport are touching and brilliant choices, as is the opening voice-over regarding the love expressed by those who who were trapped in the World Trade Center on September 11. As for everything in between -- some story lines, strong and believable, some silly; some performances subtle and well-realized, others not -- all is forgiven. It is not by chance that the film is set in the weeks leading to Christmas. It is meant as a gift of love to the audience. Find a story or two or three to relate to, be kind and tolerant of the rest, and enjoy this flawed but sweet reminder about the many ways and places we are blessed with love in our lives.
Monterey Pop (1968)
So many gone too young
There was a time in 1969 when a friend and I went to see Monterey Pop every Friday night at the Kips Bay Cinema in NYC just to hear Janis sing Ball and Chain and Otis sing I've been Lovin You Too Long. Then we'd go to dinner and maybe another movie, but it set up our entire weekend.
Now, I think about how many of the performers were gone too soon, too young -- Janis, Jimi, Otis, Mama Cass... How amazing to have them all there in this one glorious celebration of music and the innocence (yes) of the 60's.
Maybe it's not the best "film-making" but it's a treasure to be appreciated as the years go by. Would love to see a DVD release with any additional available footage. Enjoy and remember, (or discover)
Moment to Moment (1966)
a romantic dream
When I saw this film when it was released, I was twenty, and I promised myself that one day I would sip a glass of wine on the terrace of the beautiful Colombe d'Or restaurant in St. Paul de Vence, just as Jean Seberg and her sailor did. Several years later, there I was, and so I will always remember this film fondly not only for the initial enjoyment of seeing it, but also for the pleasure it provided me when I got to fulfill the romantic dream it inspired.
