Mahanadhi (1994)
A Tamizh movie classic (10/10)
This movie is a typical Kamal, Santhana Barathi, Ilayaraaja classic and one of the movies Kamal has done his best without overdoing (which IMO he frequently does).
It's the story of an innocent village widower businessman who leads a simple life along with his children and Mother-in-law. He yields to temptation of moving to the city to make big money. Then starts all the trouble and pain that he has to face. The movie is really intense, dark and tragic.I will say no more for it will spoil the suspense.
Illayaraja has done his part by providing the movie with a great musical score.
Mahanadi is probably one of the few thamizh movie worth the time. 10/10 for the acting, direction and the music.
Sathi Leelavathi (1995)
A true Balu Mahendra Masterpiece (10/10)
This movie is one of the few tamil movies that are worth watching multiple times. The movie has to be watched closely and is not your everyday indian masala movie to watch while you do your usual chores.
Kovai Sarala and Kamalahassan have done an amazing job with their Coimbatore (kovai) tamizh accent. There are absolutely no unnecessary scenes and the humour is clean and neat. Thanks to Crazy Mohan's dialogues. This is rare in the current thamizh movies. Illayaraja has done his job in the two songs and the background score which is very apt. Kamalahassan has for once not "hogged" the screen and acted according to Balu Mahendra's direction.
Sathi Leelavathi is one of my all time favourite films.
Arth (1982)
Worth the time, Great Music
I saw this movie recently (2002) and was amazed that a simple theme was handled pretty well. Shabna Azmi's acting is good as usual. The editing is pretty poor and the movie moves pretty slowly. The best part of the movie are the three songs and the music by Jagjit Singh. I was hooked to these songs from the very first time I heard them couple of years ago.
I would give this movie a 7/10 on an absolute scale.
Aan Paavam (1985)
Great Comedy,Great Music..
This is one of the earliest of Pandiaraajan's movie.Great background score and the one in particular when Pandian meets with seetha. "Kaadhal Kasukudhayya" is an amazing song based on the raaga shanmukapriya. The dance and expressions in this song is also really funny. Its one of the movies of Paandiaraajan that should not be missed. In addition to pandiaraajan's sarcasm and with it also has Janakaraj & V.K.Ramasamy.
Fire (1996)
Controversial is all about it
The theme is controversial and the depiction of the hypocritical and sexually starved india is excellent.Nothing more to this film. There is a lack of good dialogues(why was the movie in english??). There was lack of continuity and lack of passion/emotion in the acting.
Cabaret (1972)
rank is too low in imdb!!!
This is one of the best musicals I have ever seen. All the songs are absolutely catchy and brilliantly choreographed.
Gary is the star of the show with his eerie smile throughout the show and an excellent performance. The whole film is so well built that it builds the nazi presence so very passively that you are wondering why you are scared all the time even though there arent any scenes of brutality or torture.
Scenes to watch: 1.The song money makes the world go round 2. Nazi boy singing(really strong) 3.The last scene of the reflection of Nazi officers
