Knights of God (1987)
Aha! Finally found this gem thanks to John Woodvine
I saw this series when I was a teenager and occasionally remembered it and wanted to locate DVDs of it, but had no recollection of what it was called...
Recently I watched Season 2 of "Shameless" and as soon as John Woodvine appeared in it (as Neville Galagher) I recognized that he performed in the series and it gave me a vital clue.
I scoured his filmography until I finally found this series. I'm glad to see that there are others that remember it, even if they are few. Hopefully I'll be able to find a copy of the series somewhere so I can watch it again.
Hopefully it won't disappoint me, I watched it many years ago.
Everything Is Illuminated (2005)
Perfect cinema
"Everything is Illuminated" is a marvelous piece of cinema. Every frame is a beautiful work of art, both compositionally and emotionally. Liev Schreiber has made an amazing transition from acting to directing. I think only Cinema Paradiso comes close in combining emotional sensitivity and perfection in cinematography. While Elijah Wood does an excellent job as Jonathan Safran Foer, it is Eugene Hutz as Alex and Boris Leskin as the grandfather that really make the movie what it is. Casting Hutz is a stroke of genius, as he fits the character exactly. It left me wondering if he was cast because his group's songs fit the spirit of the film so well, or the songs were included because he fit the character so well
Three Kings (1999)
Behind the scenes of the first prime-time war
The Gulf War was a job left half undone. This movie shows some of the apparently not so clean results of a war that appeared at the time to be fought from the air and on the airwaves. It falls short of an expose' but that wasn't it's goal, the movie is both entertaining and thought provoking and is highly recommended.
