The Tower (1993)
Enjoyable way to spend an afternoon
I saw this movie on or local cable station a little while ago and found myself enjoying it. It is a predictable movie, but I continued to watch anyway. Paul Rieser is both the star and the comic relief as Tony. his character is enjoyable, a little annoying sometimes, but not enough that you are put off by him. He has several good one liners. and several scenes where he sings "Bad Moon Rising" The basic plot is that Tony starts running up computer violations in his new job. after a few, the computer, CAS, who's the mind of the building, views him as a security risk and decides to terminate him, and while doing so, kills off several innocent people in the process. watch it if you ever have the chance, I enjoyed it to the end. SPOILER AHEAD...My only gripe is that Roger Rees gets killed off way to early. I am a fan of his, and I felt that a lot more could have been done with his character. I would have really enjoyed the movie if He and Paul Rieser teamed up to stop the building. Other than that, it was an enjoyable movie.
7/10 ***
P.S. future Dinner and a Movie host Annabelle Gurwitch is also featured in a small role
The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976)
The best of the series!
This movie has what I have wanted to see since "A Shot in The Dark". The role of Charles Dreyfus expanded. While I freely admit that Peter Sellers is one of the greatest comic talents there is, I also have to admit that I also watch the movies to see Herbert Lom as Dreyfus. The scenes between Sellers and Lom are absolutely brilliant, and terrific to watch. The pair play off each other beautifully. (See the scene with them and the laughing gas, and the scene with them at the beginning)Instead of leaving the Dreyfus role in the sidelines, Blake Edwards turns the role into the bad guy of the movie. And instead of having Dreyfus go slowly mad during the movie, Blake Edwards lets Lom go completely over the top. (Which is absolutely hilarious!) Drefus is completely crazy almost from the start.(and he is the best bad guy in the Pink Panther series). The basic plot is this. After spending three years in an asylum to cure him of his desire to kill Clouseau, Charles Drefus has been declared sane by his psychiatrist, and he is going before a review board to be released. However, before this happens, Clouseau comes to wish him well. To make a long story short, Dreyfus is sent completely over the edge by the visit. He escapes from the asylum, kidnaps a scientist and his daughter, and forces the scientist to build him a doomsday device. Meanwhile, Clouseau is put on the case of the kidnapped scientist. Dreyfus then makes his demand. He doesn't want much. all he wants is Clouseau exterminated! This movie features all the regulars from the series, including Burt Kwouk, Graham Stark, And Andre Marriane. Watch it for them, watch it for the hilarious story, but especially watch it for the wonderful comedy talents of Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom! 10 out of 10
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Geoffrey Rush does horror?
First of all, let me say that this is MY opinion. Some people will agree, some people won't. I have to say I loved this movie. This movie put Geoffrey Rush on my list of all time favorite actors. House on Haunted Hill is a loose remake of the 1958 HOHH, directed by William Castle and starring the great Vincent Price. When I first heard about the remake, and heard that Geoffrey Rush was replacing Vincent Price, I couldn't believe it. Having seen the original, and being a huge fan of Vincent Price, I didn't think I would like this movie at all, but I loved it. One of the best things about it is the fact that they made the movie somewhat original. Instead of a shot for shot remake (i.e Psycho, which was terrible) they took a different turn, gave it a somewhat different plot, and made the house actually haunted(or is it?). Geoffrey Rush is fantastic. I saw him in Elizabeth and Les Miserables after I saw this movie, and couldn't believe it was the same person. He looks like Vincent Price, he steals the scenes like Vincent Price, but He doesn't IMITATE Vincent Price, which would have been easy to do. In the original, Vincent Price played the role very elegant and classy, while Geoffrey Rush plays him more seedy, and kind of like a little kid doing something very naughty (and loving it!). He manages to do exactly what Vincent Price did in the original. He makes you like the role in the first few minutes you see him. I also can't forget the performances of Famke Janssen, Taye Diggs, Ali Larter, Bridgette Wilson, Peter Gallagher, and Chris Kattan. They were also equally great in their roles. One thing that does upset me is the constant slams about the computer graphics. While they were not the best, I found them somewhat believable.
Spoiler
If I worried about how the computer effects looked in every movie I saw, then portions of Jurassic Park 1 and 2, Titanic, Deep Blue Sea, and lots of other movies would not have impressed me as much as they did. While a collage of smoky ghosts chasing the surviving members of the cast around isn't the most scary thing in the world, what else could they have done? Dressed up a member of the Crew in a white sheet and had him walk around yelling "Boo"?
This movie is definitely a must see. Rent it today! I give it a Ten out of Ten.
Ten Little Indians (1989)
Strange place for murder!
Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians has been set in some strange places. This version is no exception. Instead of being set in a Ski resort/castle, or a Hotel in the desert, this version has them on Safari in the middle of Africa! While this would not be my first choice of setting, it's actually pretty good. The acting is not the best, but it's still watchable. This is the first version Saw, basically because Herbert Lom was in it, and I was suprised when the murderer,(I can't say who)was revealed. This version, however, did something that the 1966 and 1974 versions didn't. they actually changed the dialog. Anyone who has seen the 3 previous versions (I have seen all four)will certainly remember the 2 englishmen on an island story . While I can't lie and say this is the best of the versions, it's still one you should see!
trivia: This is Herbert Lom's second appearance in a Ten Little Indians movie. He played Dr. Armstrong in the previous version!
Ein Unbekannter rechnet ab (1974)
O.K. But not the best
I don't know why, but I actually found this version of Ten Little indians to be my favorite. I saw it for sale on EBAY and I bought it. If you want to see the greatest version of Ten Little Indians, Rene' Clair's And Then There Were None is the best. I mainly enjoyed this version because I am a fan of Richard Attenborough, who plays the Judge, Herbert Lom, who plays the Doctor, and Oliver Reed, who plays Lombard. I found this version to be well-acted enough that the killer remains a suprise, and I knew who the killer was from the very begining, as I read the book. I will add though, that one reviewer commented that the killer is obvious from the very beginning, that is mostly because most of the actors don't act suspicious!
SPOILER!!!!!!
with the exception of Herbert Lom. He preformance is good enough that you can be mislead into believing he is the killer.
For mystery fans in a forgiving mood, this movie is a must see!
Psycho (1998)
I didn't think it was that bad.
This remake was exactly like I expected it to be. a remake of the original. But come on, did we really need to see Norman Bates masturbating at the sight of Anne Heche? I didn't think it was that bad, but I did not like Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates. Every time he did that aw-shucks laugh I wanted to punch him. I am thoroughly convinced that Vaughn is the only one that showed up for the casting call. I did however like Jullianne Moore and William H. Macy. I thought they did well in their parts, replacing Vera Miles and Martin Balsam, who also did excellently in their roles. Even though Macy's character was killed after only a short time. It's okay to see, but if you haven't, go see the original. It's a lot better, and Anthony Perkins does an excellent job in a character that he is always most remembered for.
