The Crystal Maze (1990)
greatest show... ever (or so I remember)
I remember this show fondly. But, alas, I remember this show only from the couple of times I saw it in my early childhood when I visited my grandmother in Scotland. It was the most entertaining game show I've ever seen and though I don't know how, I hope all of you readers will happen upon reruns (no matter how unlikely that seems.)
Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
Poor Movie, Poorly Done
This movie had a plot that was so terrible, that not even the long drawn-out running jokes could keep it afloat in my mind. It was certainly entertaining but the acting as well as the screen play itself was revolting. The actors played themselves and not very well at that. The plot line was not at all credible, even as fantasy. There were just a lot of one-liners that stick in peoples' heads pasted together with cheesy and unconvincing transitions from one to the next. One scene in which the "bad alien woman" assumes the form of an under-clad giant who gives onlookers a free show was reminiscent of a recent N*Sync video that lacked all and any good taste.
This movie was throughly rotten and not worth the $9.50 in NYC that I had to pay to see it. However, if you want to see a cheap, cute movie that would only appeal to the 12-20 set, then by all means, go and see it. I wouldn't suggest wasting the money for the cinema, though.

The Big Tease (1999)
Nothing better than a scotsman with style
The character Crawford MacKenzie leaves his home of Glasgow, Scotland to participate in the most prestigious hairdressing competition in the world, The Platinum Scissors. When he arrives, he discovers that he has not in fact, been selected to do anything more than sit in the audience. Being a passionate man desiring victory, he goes out on a quest to become eligible to participate and finally succeeds, thanks to a woman and Candy Harper and a limo-driving companion. Won't spoil the ending, but you had better see it yourself! B+
A Night at the Roxbury (1998)
If not for SNL, for Chris Kattan
If you don't see this for Saturday Night Live, see it for Chris Kattan. I have to admit that my opinion is biased because I enjoy him so much but this movie, though lacking a very persuasive plot to sustain it, was amusing. The best parts, one must admit, are Chris Kattan's relation with a woman working as a creditor and the disruption of Will Ferrell's wedding. It was definately more than 2 hours of head-bopping however, and maybe not worth 9 bucks at theatres, but definately a movie to rent. I give it a B.
Music from Another Room (1998)
almost satisfactory in stringing together
This movie had an amazing plot... however, the transitions (especially the conspicuous musical crescendos with one song in particular blaring in and out throughout the movie, destroying any power love seems might have harbored) were sometimes awful and the script was often terrible with obscene, unrealistic, and out of place sexual discussions. One scene in particular seemed completely out of place: Jude Law (Danny), in front of the entire family tells everyone about how he felt falling in love. In reality, this would never happen and the only thing that sustained this film long enough for me to see the end was the acting itself. A great performance by Jane Adams as an insane wife to a cheating husband and also, congrats to Jennifer Tilly who proves to us once again that she needn't be type cast so often as "Candy"s or "Mindy"s. Overall, I give this movie a C+.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)
Jim Carrey shows his capability
Sometimes Jim Carrey is put down as merely a crazy physical comedy man out to get cheap laughs but this movie proves that he has huge talent. He has shown us his skills in drama (Truman Show, Man on the Moon) and has made us cover our faces in slight disgust (Dumb and Dumber) but in Ace Venura (which I have to admit, I avoided seeing for quite some time) he showed us how capable he was with writing the screen play mostly himself and going out for more than cheap laughs. Besides Carrey, however, the acting was not incredibly. With cameos from Tone Loc and others, the cast was to say at least an interesting bunch and I give this movie a B+.
If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969)
so good that there oughtta be a revival
I'm a child of the 90's (born in '85) so I missed out on a lot of things... I'm most upset about not being around when this movie first came out. Being hilarious... one of my favorites along with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Dead Poets Society (which might strike many of you as odd), it is no wonder that i'm taking the time to request it to all of you! Pure comedy genius! Ian McShane and Suzanne Pleshette (i have no gift for spelling) are an amazing team and though it does not have the characteristic hollywood ending, it's good enough for me!
Pay It Forward (2000)
a beautiful followup to american beauty
i went into the theatre last night with mediocre expectations. i left, having cried 17 times. no exaggeration. Kevin Spacey was amazing and i REFUSE to ruin the ending for anyone because it is astonishing. Helen Hunt, who I have hated in the past, made me love her amazing acting ability and Haley wowed me again. The story I was sure was going to one of those big-budget made-for-tears movies that bring the women in. It was amazing. behind the idea itself was some real substance... WOW
