Shakespeare in Love (1998)
A fictional story about the making of Romeo And Juliet.
A story about young playwright Will Shakespeare, who after years of works creates a masterpiece: Romeo And Juliet. A love story that makes his name remembered. The idea is brilliant, but the result is something entirely different. The movie focuses all too much on Romeo And Juliet, maybe because a couple of years back the new version of the play was released and gained huge respect among people everywhere. This was the most critical mistake the movie crew made. The brilliant idea for a movie was spoiled by excessive Romeo And Juliet- scenes, because now anyone who has seen Romeo And Juliet has really nothing to see in Shakespeare In Love. The sentence "Additional dialogue by William Shakespeare" in the movie credits should have been replaced with "Dialogue mainly by William Shakespeare". The main theme in the movie is the making of Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet, and the secondary theme is a regular predictable love story between Shakespeare's and actress Viola De Lesseps. This movie has nothing special to offer, and is not even all that amusing (as a comedy is expected to be). The fact that this totally common movie, with a plot exactly like all comedy flavored love stories through history won the Oscar for the best movie, is beyond my understanding. Gwyneth Palthrow's performance is not bad at all, but hardly worth an Oscar, either. The only bright spot in the movie is Shakespeare's brilliant dialogue, and that proves the lack of imagination by the writers.
Titanic (1997)
A common love story with a misguiding title
The story of the love between two people from entirely different worlds. Why is this movie called "Titanic"? This is a love story, and the plot has just about nothing to do with the ship itself, Titanic is just the set. The plot is not that bad, but there's nothing special about it, the same story has been seen a million times. Some of the actor/actress performances are very good, and director James Cameron does an exceptional job. But good acting and direction do not make a great movie without a great script. Why this movie was such a grand hit, I can't tell. Maybe it's the effects, maybe the acting, maybe even the music, who knows. Titanic is a pretty good movie, and watching it is not a waste of time, but the fact remains, that the movie is a thirteen-a-dozen-type of love story.
Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Modern Shakespeare
The most popular love story in history, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, converted to modern day sets. The director and writer of the movie decided to handle the conflicts between modern day sets and Shakespeare's original texts with the means of comedy. This was not necessarily a bad idea, since Shakespeare may be somewhat boring at times, and small humorous bits make the movie..well, less boring. But the result was, that Luhrmann almost turned the love story of all times into the comedy of the year. The movie is by no means bad, but it does not have the spirit of Shakespeare's texts. This movie is a disgrace to the original play, but if one is able to ignore this fact, one can see this movie as a brilliant love story. Well, of course it is, it's Shakespeare after all, so the story is exceptional. Leonardo DiCaprio shows yet again that he is not just a pretty boy, but he can act, too! His performance is brilliant, and Clare Danes' is amazing, also. So a movie with wonderful acting performances and an exceptional script can't be bad, but there's just a tad too much humor involved, this story does not need that. I can't help myself, I am comparing the movie to the original play, so I think the movie is not that great.
Richard III (1995)
A re-staging nightmare
This is an example of how terribly re-staging of a play may fail. The original Shakespeare text with the new sets do not work at all, it almost seems like the crew has first made a movie about England in the 30's and then dubbed the movie to old English. The dialogue simply does not seem to belong to the movie. The only bright spot in the movie is Ian McKellen's performance as the horrifying Richard III. If you have ever read the original play, or seen any other, more traditional versions of Richard III, do not see this movie. This movie makes me wonder whether the movie crew wanted to make a tribute to The Bard, or an insult.
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995)
The guy with the hair is back!
This movie is not quite as funny as the first one (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective), but it's close. The comedy is totally weird again, and I didn't expect anything less. The plot is not worth mentioning, and there is no special affects or dramatic acting, but who needs those elements in a crazy comedy? Not me. Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is a must-see for all who like Carrey's comedy. A couple of words of warning: If you do NOT like Carrey's humor (for what ever reason), you're going to hate this movie, since this movie is based totally on Carrey's comedy.
Forrest Gump (1994)
You gotta love him
I can't think of any reason why someone would not like this movie. It seems to have just about everything you want: comedy, romance, action, tragedy... The script is simply ingenious, and Tom Hanks' performance as Forrest Gump is stunning. The humor is based on Forrest's dumbness and wonderful "this is how [item] was created"- histories that show great imagination by the writers. One of the best movies I have ever seen.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)
Crazy humor by rubber-faced Jim Carrey
I can't believe I have to give a 10 to this movie. Okay, so the plot isn't that amazing. A bit weird, but not amazing. The acting performances aren't anything special, either. But so WHAT? This movie is supposed to be a whacky comedy, and that it is. Folks say Jim Carrey can't act, and he can only do weird faces and maneuvers. Again: so what? All a crazy comedy needs to be considered terrific is that it is FUNNY, right? I laughed just about through the whole movie. It is true, that a movie like this does not give too good a picture of Mr.Carrey's acting ability, but this sure shows that he's an exceptional comedian. This is the type of movie that you either like or hate, it makes you laugh or cry. Some people can't understand this kind of humor but I sure can.
