Rambo (2008)
A fitting finale to the Rambo series...
This is a tremendous film. Stallone has proved, once again, that he can exceed even himself. He has given us a fine career. His last two movies, "Rocky" and "Rambo," are the proof positive of his multifaceted talent. This film also brings us to the realization of some fundamental realities. First, it is completely realistic, not just with the violence and gore, but with the actual circumstances among the people of Burma today. As seen in the recent flooding, the people of Burma live and die under one of the most oppressive, inhumane and unjustifiable military juntas the world has ever seen, and have for decades. Why the world allows this to continue is a testimony to the deterioration of conscience in the general populace and the unwillingness to sacrifice for the good of humanity. There will never be another "greatest generation." The second reality is the visualization of a few dedicated individuals who, under the worst of circumstances, risk and give their lives for the betterment of others. A moving film, Mr. Stallone, you make us proud...
Fool's Gold (2008)
Much Better than its Press
Look folks, you have to decide why you go to the movies. If you are looking for advanced social commentary, if you are looking for the solution to global warming, if you are looking for political satire, if you are looking for classical tragedy or if you are seeking intellectual challenges that will keep you thinking into the night, this is not the movie to see.
If you are looking for something light, something that will distract you from the stresses of the day, something that will let you leave the theater feeling better than when you went in then you should consider this film.
This production will not result in any Oscar nominations, but it is a great way to spend nearly two hours forgetting what the real world is coming to.
There is some great scenery, a little good comedy, some violence, and more than a little silliness. Come on, this is why we love the movies, they make us feel better. This is one of those movies.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Preview of things to come...
Watch out 2-D, your days are numbered. The film is, of course, excellent. The 3-D rendition is extremely good. Nothing has been lost in the translation. The change was made without resorting to gimmicks, everything looked exactly right, it was completely enjoyable. The soundtrack was much more effective and contributed to the effect. Even the Disney logo in 3-D was impressive. Our showing was accompanied by a preview of a 3-D film, action adventure, coming out next year. It was also very impressive, as it was created with 3-D in mind. I think this represents another paradigm shift in mass entertainment. As the 8 track gave way to the cassette, the cassette to the CD, I believe that this marks the beginnings of the transition of conventional 2-D to digital 3-D. It will take a few years, but eventually it will be the standard. It will likely hit the video gaming world first, but the train is coming. Of course, this is only my opinion, I could be wrong...
Deja Vu (2006)
Great Film
It is very difficult to make a film of this type without leaving "loose ends." In this case, they have succeeded to tie up everything very well. It is the sort of film you have to see again to catch all of the nuances. As usual, Denzel Washington delivers a great performance. It is a credible screenplay which delivers very well on its premise. The choice of location is especially appropriate. The parallels with the perils in today's world cannot be missed. There is no "grandstanding" or "preaching." It is a very well executed presentation of a very well written and excellently cast screenplay, and all involved are to be congratulated. I will see it again, and likely purchase the DVD. It is an "action movie" with intellectual depth, a rarity.
The Postman (1997)
Great Film, Worth the Three Hours
This is a great film. It is a pity that so many non-Americans did not like (understand) it, but the cultural divide was probably too great. The film makes use of strong characters, moving music, scenic beauty to make an important point about the spirit of humanity. Humanity will rise up against tyranny and will do so with any tools at their disposal, all they need is a rallying point and a leader, even a reluctant leader. Those who so criticize this film have not the ability or the inclination to grasp that basic fact, or perhaps have an interest in not seeing others grasp that fact.
It is a very worthwhile film. See it, if you don't understand it, see it again...
My Favorite Martian (1999)
A very pleasant distraction, kids loved it
We found this film to be surprisingly enjoyable. I enjoyed it, with memories of the original series. My children, too young to remember the original series, also found it very amusing, and, in spots, quite funny. It is a bit more racy than the average Disney film, but not in any offensive way. The effects are well done, and the roles played out well. We may well see it again, and will definitely purchase the video.
