Cruel Intentions (1999)
Sexy, fun, and dangerously cool!!!
Hey folks! Just saw this flick, and it was worth it! Sarah Michelle Gellar is dangerously sexy. But more so, Reese Witherspoon is good at not being so overly pure that you hate her. I like the twists and the quiet evil relationships. It's fun, and that's most important, and I don't see much else this week that can compare!
Message in a Bottle (1999)
Realistic characters and breathtaking pictures...
OK, so the basic plot may not be original, but the pictures in this movie are absolutely breathtaking! The best views of the ocean and classic sailboats you'll ever see without seeing them yourself. Kevin Costner will be as irresistible as ever, but what's up with the hair? Robin Wright Penn is a great actor, but doesn't match Costner in the sex appeal category, not that that matters for the primarily female audience. Another highlight is the realism of the characters, every little nuance reminds the audience of a real person, without that, the movie would be little more than a beautiful painting. Watch out for the surprise ending!
8MM (1999)
No thrills or surprises...
I would advise people to see something else before this one. I went to go see it because people said it had twists right up to the last frame, well, THIS ISN'T TRUE! There is one twist, and both Cage's character and the audience don't care. I will give Schumacher credit for effectively creating the intense dark mood, and it is much better than his other recent disasters. Finally, unless your really squeamish, the content shouldn't bother anyone too much, it's not as bad as people say.
Rushmore (1998)
A funny little film that's at least worth a matinee
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this film, the reduced price made it even more worth it. It starts out a little slow, but quickly becomes hard not to laugh at. The relationships between Max Flounders and the adult characters are well played and remind us of our own experiences. My only regrets for the film are that it is so short, only an hour and a half, and much more could have been done with the movie. Bill Murray is back!
All Over Me (1997)
The girls version of "KIDS"
This movie is the girls rule version of the popular yet gritty "KIDS". It shows well a girl's reluctance to let go of her life-long soulmate in order to explore her sexuality with new people. It as not as hard to watch as "KIDS" and I think sheds light on a subject that needs more attention. The girl with the pink hair who becomes integral in the movie is awesome, and Rickie from "My So-Called Life" makes a short but sweet appearance. I hope the director-writer team return soon. Check it out!
Blast from the Past (1999)
A must see pleasant surprise!!! Very Funny!
"Blast from the Past" is a pleasant surprise! It is not another one of these teen flicks rolling into theaters like the Chevy Suburban. Alicia Silverstone is back, still beautiful, but more importantly serious about her career, confident, and terrific on screen. Brendan Fraser, after his terrific performance in "Gods and Monsters", takes a comedic turn and returns to his roots, and pulls it off nicely. The supporting cast, including Christopher Walken (not as a villian), is excellent. Overall a witty movie that doesn't push its point, but rather keeps you entertained!
