The Indian Runner (1991)
heavy
Sean Penn, Charles Bronson, and Dennis Hopper. Sounds like this could have been a shoot'em up film but instead it's a beautiful story about two brothers. This one movie has more raw emotion in it than Julia Roberts entire career will ever muster.
Hayseed (1997)
boy loses dog, goes to big city, hilarity ensues...
Boy loses dog, goes to the big city, finds girl but she's a whore, oh well... Fans of Kids in the Hall will like this one as it stars two members of the group, Scott Thompson and Mark McKinney, and was penned by one the show's writers, Paul Bellini. The story dawdles along but has lots fun stuff along the way. Oh yeah, and Marc Hickox is both brilliant and sexy as the skateboarding swindler, Emile.
Cabin Boy (1994)
The Odyssey for Stoners
Fuse literary themes like Candide and the Odyssey with Chris Elliott's relentless style of moronic comedy and you have a movie people will either love or hate. A wicked cast and classic special effects make up for a somewhat lethargic pace in action, but the booty of comedy in this movie make up for the long nights at sea. Watch it, own it, love it. I do.
L'homme de Rio (1964)
The French template for Raiders of the Lost Ark.
If you thought Speilberg was clever for creating Indiana Jones, you should check out this movie and see where the idea came from. With too many parallels to be coincidence, this film is another example of how Hollywood steals from European films and no one in the U.S. knows any better because they never leave their backyard. Oh, and it has really cool low budget action scenes; particularly a pursuit through a construction site that is about as glamorous as getting chased by two Brazilian thugs can be.
