Ørnens øje (1997)
Standard kids' adventure but well made.
Even watching this dubbed in German, which meant I didn't get every word, I still enjoyed this. The two young leads turn in excellent performances and the music is always excellent. It's a very standard 'prince in danger helped by kitchen boy' story, but it's very well made of its kind.
Wanted (1998)
Every cliche in the book
This movie about a man on the run for killing a mobster is the kind of film you can watch entirely on fast forward, once you know who's who, and not lose a thing. It has an attractive cast but the plot is a virtual writer's guide to cinema cliche, and boy does the dialogue clunk!
The Blackout (1997)
Boredom made visible
This is a dreary, confusing piece of soft porn masquerading as art. After watching it, I wanted back the life I'd wasted on it. Maybe it has a profound message in there somewhere but I doubt it. The film is as self-absorbed as the people it portrays. And self-absorbed is never a pretty sight.
Possums (1998)
A variation on the no-hopers make good theme. When...
A variation on the no-hopers make good theme. When the Possums football team is disbanded because it's never won a game in its entire existence, a fan recreates it in fantasy radio commentaries until, bit by bit, the team rebuilds itself as the pride of the town and takes on local rivals in a final 'shoot-out'. You've seen it all before, but it's done with conviction and real charm.
