La planète sauvage (1973)
Are we there yet?
This was an interesting thirty minute story, made to fit in a seventy minute viewing time. It was bulked up by so many stretches of overwrought "significance" (which added nothing to the story) that the otherwise well-done artwork loses a lot of its appeal. Some of that filler time would have been better spent with some exposition, or detailing the backstory of the protagonists and antagonists and setting up the final resolution. But somebody thought the time would be better spent showing long periods of tiny figures running through a Dali-esque landscape and bizarre creatures behaving badly, none of which move the narrative forward. If it's your thing to be charmed by art-school importance this may work for you, but if you want to be told a thoughtful story, look elsewhere.
Norsemen (2016)
I keep waiting for it to be funny. Still waiting.
Imagine a show conceived and written by Will Farrell and performed by two dozen Will Farrells.
The Little Mermaid Live! (2019)
Sloppy
Without a doubt, the worst job of sound engineering I've heard in years. Half the time you couldn't make out the lead vocals over the crowd noise. And since the songs were the only real "live" performance, why bother?
The Journey of Natty Gann (1985)
Sweet little film
Not a blockbuster, not a tour de force, just a very entertaining film. Good Disney plot, fairly good acting, beautiful visuals, and a wonderful score by James Horner (one of his best, I think). My daughters loved it when they were young.
Stepmom (1998)
Can you say "predictable?"
Strictly a Hollywood Formula (TM) outing, heavy-handed, maudlin, and completely unoriginal. I read a review calling this the '90s version of "Kramer vs. Kramer," but at least KvK was at the time fairly original. The two lead actresses tried valiantly to keep the film upright, but with a script like this, the effort was in vain.
I have to admit that I did enjoy counting the continuity errors in this one (does anyone have a final count on how many different "engagement" rings Roberts ended up wearing?)
