Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
It's original, and not what you expect
By all means, this is not a perfect movie, but it certainly NOT the train wreck that users on here would have you believe.
After the criticism that TFA followed the plot of ANH too closely, and people comparing this one to ESB based on nothing but the previews, I was quite pleased that this movie contained a lot of surprises for me.
I thought I knew how this one would play out, because after all, there have been 7 other movies. However, this one kept surprising me. Something would happen and I would think "Now what?"
There are some spots that the pacing slows. There were some plot points that had me scratching my head. But there were enough surprises, enough NEW and ORIGINAL stuff that despite the detractions, I enjoyed it.
Go in with an open mind. Forget where you think this would go. Forget all the thoughts you had about what sequels to ROTJ would consist of. Don't try to anticipate this one or go in with some idea of what it should be. Just go in, be open to everything, and you'll be amazed.
Remember the lesson of the cave in ESB? "What's in there?" "Only what you take with you."
Don't take any preconceived ideas with you. Just go and take it all in.
Listen to what the story is telling you. There are a lot of deep themes in this one - about who we are, what we can become, why we do things, and what is truly important.
Is it a perfect movie? No. But it is new and original, and despite how I didn't like what happened to some of the characters, I applaud Rian Johnson for making a bold choice, and while this may not be the Star Wars you wanted, this is still a great Star Wars movie.
Reptilicus (1961)
Not a man in a suit...
Unlike Godzilla, which had a man in a rubber suit portraying the monster, this movie monster appeared to be terror form a hand puppet and bad marionettes. The monster was more laughable than terrorizing. While I was watching it, I kept waiting for an appearance by Crow and Tom Servo...
Say what you want about cheesy Japanese monster movies, there is nothing so bad as a Danish one. I consider this the "Havarti" of cheesy monster movies...
Prague Duet (1998)
Great film about past secrets
I had never heard of this movie, but since I am going to Prague this summer, I wanted to check it out. I was very surprised. This is a deep romantic movie of a woman who falls in love with a former Czech dissident writer, only to have their love tested by a family secret from the woman's past. This is an outstanding movie. Gina Gershon looks good and acts great. I highly recommend it!
Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
Classic Next Generation
This show was much better than I thought it was going to be. It is classic Next Generation - humor, romance, twists in plot, and of course, space battles; this film was really great. There was one part missing, and I don't want to give it away, but I came away from the theater feeling a bit empty. I think it will be apparent. I will dare say that I even liked this one better than First Contact! Finally, we get to see a new planet with a new race with a new plot! Star Trek is still alive and well!
The Last Days of Disco (1998)
Did I miss something - like a plot?
I got really confused in this movie. The music was loud and all the characters mumbled. All of the men in the movie looked alike, and there was absolutely no plot. What was the point of this movie? What did it have to do with disco? You could have set this movie at any place at any time, and the story of the relationship between these folks would still be the same - and it would still stink!
Deep Impact (1998)
put me out of my misery
I couldn't wait for the comet to hit the earth and put all of these people out of their misery. Denise Crosby should have stayed with the Star Trek franchise, as she looked awful in this film. Also, I kept laughing out loud in the theater. Who watches MSNBC now, let alone during the possible end of the earth? And who were the "heroes" - the Ultimate Fighting Champion from Friends and the guy from Men Behaving Badly. I hated this movie badly. Awful awful awful!
