Ein steinreicher Mann (1932)
Curt Bois - the German Buster Keaton
Curt Bois appears in this tremendously funny movie with charming Dolly Haas. They perform to witty songs together: "Komm, lass uns eine Rumba tanzen" and "Ein süsser Blick...". Curt Bois appears also in "Bitter Sweet" with Jeanette McDonald, "Casablanca", "Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti" and many other films - he was one of those film-emigrants in Hollywood and returned in the early fifties to Germany (passage paid by Thomas Mann)... I would pay anything if I could watch this film in a cinema!!!!
Das Lied der Wüste (1939)
Zarah Leander in Northern-Africa
Grace Collins (Zarah Leander), a beautiful singer with an astonishing alto-voice, comes to Rocky Camp (a far away place in Northern Africa). She meets a young (and not really beautiful) swedish engineer, who is building a copper-mine. They fall in love. But Graces stepfather (the bad character) needs to kill Brenton (her love)for some financial reason: His soldiers take him to prison. He will be executed, but help could be there within one hour. Can you imagine what happens now? No, it is impossible: She SINGS for the soldiers and saves him. Happy End! A boring movie, but Zarah Leander is wonderful and adorable as always: She sings "Fatme erzähl' mir ein Märchen" composed by Nico Dostal.
Sissi - Schicksalsjahre einer Kaiserin (1957)
Kitsch
What a film: full colour (from Agfa), all those typical Austrian names and characters, beautiful and young Romy Schneider, but it is "Kitsch". The movie has nothing in common with real history, but served in the 50s an audience which tried to forget the war and nazism. They took the most wonderful scenes in Venice, when Sissis little daughter welcomes her mother arriving by gondola. Kitsch as kitsch can!
Allotria (1936)
Charming "British-style" pre-war comedy
First of all the end of a very elegant, charming and naughty little play about two completely mixed up couples: six happy honeymooners singing together: "Der schönste Tonfilmschluß ist doch der Verlobungskuß...Allotria". The most "pizzicato" and wonderful music by composer Peter Kreuder gives this film a very special charm. Renate Müller suicided later and Adolf Wohlbrück went to England and changed his name into Anton Walbrook. He was "the most admirable man of the UFA" - men and women adored him!
Chelovek-amfibiya (1961)
Science-fiction at its best!
What a wonderful movie! Great music by Russian composer Andrei Petrov (some electronic instruments) and an adorable good looking (and acting) Vladimir Korenev. Ordinary people think that he's a kind of frightening creature, but in fact he is the son of a professor living after a live-saving operation under the sea. It follows a love story, some action and NO HAPPY END. This makes a differnce to some similar American productions! It's worth to view the film (even in Russian version, because of the excellent camera work and beautiful actors).
