The Battle of Shaker Heights (2003)
A barrel of laughs
I followed PGL2 religiously. I entered a screenplay in the competition. (a ROMANTIC COMEDY even) I watched the show. When the movie came out in Boston, I went to see it.
It is a barrel of laughs. I found it much funnier then American Wedding. I noticed that it was a little short on time and even though they edited out much of the drama in order to retain the comedy, there were a number of lines that were cut out that I would have left in.
Despite my familiarity with the screenplay, seeing the film play out on the big screen was a joy, and I found myself laughing out loud several times.
I would have risked a wide opening (2000+ theaters) It probably would not have been a major blockbuster, but I do believe it would have made back its costs.
I'll get the DVD (the PGL2 box if my $ can afford it)
How to Deal (2003)
worth the wait
I am a guy who likes chick flicks. What is wrong with that?
I first saw the trailer for this film before How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, another chick flick I enjoyed.
Since then I have been waiting for this film. It was not Mandy Moore. It was the story that got to me,and when I finally dsaw it,it didn't disappoint.
The main character has to deal with a lot of different situations during the course of the film which is like compressing all the good parts from an entire season of one's teen soap. (90210,Felicity,Dawson's Creek,ect...)
The Trent Ford character was also interesting and acted like a real friend to Mandy's character as opposed to the hello, let's get it on,goodbye.
I'll buy the DVD.

From Justin to Kelly (2003)
Would you believe,I actually saw it?
"From Justin to Kelly" isn't too bad for a quickly made film intended to cash in on American Idol. It is not a great film, but it is not that bad. There are a number of scenes where the characters (mainly Justin and Kelly) break out in song. I was sort of disappointed that a soundtrack album wasn't released featuring music from the film. Fox's original plan to issue a DVD three weeks after its release to theatres may had not been a bad idea, and although I liked the film, it may had been better for this movie to go the direct to DVD route and put the 2001 screen opening for a wide release of "Bend it like Beckham"
If you think you will like it,you most likely will.
Almost Famous (2000)
THE BUZZ!
Can't say enough good words about this film. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- However,a DREAM ending would have had two extra short clips. One of William getting an advance copy of Stillwater's Fourth album to review for Rolling Stone. He opens it,brings it to his record player, and starts to play it. FF 25 years to a 40 year old William (played by Crowe himself) pulling out a CD of the same album. He puts the CD in a case and with his wife walks out of the room. You see a copy of Rolling Stone with the Headline Stillwater inducted in Rock n Roll hall of Fame. with a special card addressed to William and Lady Miller from the band. (Penny Lane catches up with William and they get married) ; Nancy Wilson could play the 41 year old Penny Lane.
Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the Thirteenth (2000)
Yuk!
This was a waste of 2 hours. Although there were a number of funny sight gags, this film looked like it was even cheaper to make than Blair witch.
There was very little if any plot to it,and the fact that we had to see a chopped up version on USA as opposed to the REAL version wasn't too good.
Scary Movie was MUCH MUCH better.
Krush Groove (1985)
the most underrated rock n roll movie of the 1980s
Krush Groove is the most underrated rock n roll movie of the 1980s. Is it the Best music film of the 80s? No that title belongs to Purple Rain. Actually Krush Groove attempts to redo Rain's successful formula, using talented musicians generally playing themselves in a fictitious story with some realistic elements. It actually came out a year or so too early, with rap and hip hop still generally a black phenomenon despite Blondie's #1 pop `Rapture'. (Debbie Harry makes an appearance here portraying a club singer.) The one `Actor' not playing himself was Blair Underwood who played the character Russell Walker (While the REAL Russell Simmons played a stage hand named Crocket)
The story deals with a number of rap artists Run DMC, Kurtis Blow and the Fat boys in their efforts to make it big as hip hop stars. It deals with the good and bad of having a hit record on a small independent record label, competition between two brothers over the heart of a young female singer (Sheila E.), the consequences of borrowing money from a loan shark, the opportunity to sign with a major label and a talent contest looking for new hip hop talent. The contest includes an appearance from New Edition, an all too brief appearance from future superstars The Beastie Boys and an in studio audition from LL Cool J. The film was rated `R' generally for some mild violence and usage of the `F' word. (Six instances where two would automatically mean an `R' rating) It didn't do too hot at the box office. I had stated that the film came out a year or so too early. The reason I stated this was that in 1986, one year following this film's release, Run DMC's cover of Aerosmith's Walk This Way got heavy airplay on white radio, even going to number1 on album rock radio in Aerosmith's homebase of Boston MA. This success opened the door for The Beastie Boys, The Fat Boys, LL Cool J, Will Smith (known at that time as The Fresh Prince) and a large number of other hip hop and rap artists to score BIG on the Pop singles and pop album charts.
Trojan War (1997)
been there (12 years ago) done that
For all practical purposes,a remake of 1985's Secret Admirer with the beautiful Jennifer Love Hewett in the Lori Lauglin role, and two unknowns in the C Thomas Howell and Kelly Preston roles. Made for video quickie dealing with a guy an intelligent dark haired woman friend who has the hots for him,and a dumb blond he wants to get.
