The Big Hit (1998)
A great movie unless you didn't get the joke
"The Big Hit" is a great movie once you understand the movie is
winking at itself. The direction is excellent, the music is
fantastic, the cast is very funny, and the action is well
executed. Thank you.
Final Justice (1998)
Taut thriller with a great story
A surprisingly well-executed and dynamic thriller that is much better that any of the recent Grisham trial based films. Quick moving and suspenseful, this movie features a great performance by the devilish Michael McKean. The movie is about a woman who's brother is murdered and his murderer is let free. Then the victim's sister kidnaps the attorney who got the murderer off and eventually goes on trial for her freedom. The story twists and turns and the directing by Tommy Lee Wallace is top-notch. The musical score by Brian Tyler is especially terrific. The cinematography (didn't catch who did it) is also fantastic. I highly recommend this film if you get the chance to see it.
Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1975)
Horribly weak passe attempt at pure-shock value masquerading as a commentary on fascism
This is a mindless and passe attempt of a movie which is basically one disgusting "shocking" scene after another parading as intellectual commentary on fascism. Merely viewing shocking torture says nothing about the human condition. It doesn't make you think and it doesn't make you ponder anything. The only thing that remains is a sick "I wish I hadn't seen that" feeling in the pit of your stomach which amounts to a mere visceral response to viewing innocent victims tortured relentlessly. It is an easy way out for a director to resort to shock value instead of tackling the difficult subject of fascism with dignified examination.
