Reviews
The Great Wall (2016)
This is a fantastic Kung Fu – Action – Ancient Fairy Tale type of movie.
Ignore the trolls. This is a fantastic Kung Fu – Action – Ancient Fairy Tale type of movie. It's like Crouching Tiger meets Pacific Rim, meets Lord of the Rings meets Jules Vern. If you don't get that, then yes you will probably not like this type of film.
Cinematography is stunning. Costumes are amazing.
My girlfriend is already working on her Lin Mae costume for Halloween.
Interesting how much time some people devote to writing negative reviews? Anyone who writes 6 paragraphs explaining their "1 Star Review" obviously has a pre-existing condition and has no idea what a true "1 Star Movie" really is.
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
Sumptuous, thrilling, emotional - classic Japanese folklore
Can't believe Kubo got beat out by Zootopia for best animated feature at the 2017 Academy Awards? Zootopia was awesome but come on people, this film took over 5 years to make. It's visually stunning and incredibly emotional. I'm sitting here in tears just thinking about it. You will need to watch it twice just to catch everything that is going on, not to mention listen to the director's commentary just to catch even more of the classic Japanese culture and symbolism that went into making it. Kids, respect and cherish your parents because they love you and they won't be around forever. Parents, hug your kids like it's the last time you will ever see them because it all goes by so fast.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes (2009)
Not very good, got my money back.
I really, REALLY, wanted to like this game.
I bought a copy for $9.99 at Office Max, because I was so impressed with Star Wars Battle Front 2, that I just had to have it, although, it was not what I expected.
First of all, it's a 2 player game, intended to be played on Microsoft's "Windows Live" network or something? (whatever that is), and they pretty much try and ram it down your throat to sign up for some kind of online service.
In fact, at first, I didn't think it would be possible to play this game without an internet connection.
Finally, after clicking around the intro screens for about a half an hour, I turned the whole thing off and started it up again.
I was finally given the option to play off-line (Start a new Campaign) which I did.
The second thing that sucked is you cannot assign custom Key Board configuration for this game. Maybe there is a way, but no matter how many times I tried, a menu would pop-up saying "You cannot exit this menu because there are un-set keys remaining". I must have screwed around trying to assign my own Key preferences for an hour before finally giving up, and accept the fact I was FORCED to use their crappy default Key assignments.
Then there was the Play Action itself.
Very clumsy and awkward. This is NOT a first person shooter or even a 2D pov "Tomb Raider" format. It plays like an old fashion "over the shoulder" arcade game, where the background SCROLLS by underneath you.
Movement is clumsy and frustrating. There is no Help menu, instructions or orientation sequence to instruct the player on how to use the controls.
I got through the first level, although I could not say how or why. It was just random chance and pressing as many buttons as possible without really knowing what I was doing.
I finally gave up and returned the Disc to Office Max to get my 10 dollars and 74 cents back.
Somewhere out there, there is a copy of this game with a big fat "RETURN TO VENDOR" sticker plastered on its face.
Too bad. I really LOVED Star Wars the animated series and was genuinely looking forward to this added experience after playing SWBFII for about the hundredth time.
I wish the programmers from Star Wars Battle Front 2 had designed this game. I would probably be playing it right now.
Tron: Legacy (2010)
Tron Legacy lives up to all expectations and surpasses them with blinding speed, grace, agility, dazzling imagery and heart warming soul.
I loved the references to the original movie. I only wish more people in our small town "got it".
There were moments throughout the picture where I wanted to stand up and cheer.
Does no one applaud during movies anymore?, or maybe the problem is just where we live.
I wish Cindy Morgan, Dan Shor and Bernard Hughes could have made even a brief cameo. Bernard (Walter/Dumont) will be sorely missed. I hope in future sequels they will be able to re-rez him if only for old-times-sake, in the same manner they paid tribute to Lawrence Olivier in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
The music is nothing less than astounding. Yet they still hearkened back to the original electronic score, only brought up to date 10 times over.
My one wish would have been a few more characters from the original, but I'm glad they passed the torch to Garrett Hedlund (Sam) who is sure to appeal to today's audience, and carry on the legend.
In summary:
As a life long TRON expert, Tron Legacy lives up to all expectations and surpasses them with blinding speed, grace, agility, dazzling imagery and heart warming soul.
The thin ice that Disney walked out on back in 1982 has resurfaced as a flawless sculpted crystal, a masterpiece that is sure to touch the inner being and imagination of generations past, present and future.
I hope it doesn't take another 28 years for the next one.
Even so, if that be the case, they will find an 81 year old man, standing there waiting for them.

Tokyo 10+01 (2003)
Cute, quirky, funny. An interesting little piece of Japanese cinema.
Having no previous knowledge of the directory Higuchinsky or his history, I didn't expect much from this movie judging by Netflix's rating. What I found however was a pretty hip piece of independent youthful film-making that kind of blends the 80's, 90's and the future.
It reminded me of a hard core version of Takeshi's Castle (AKA Most Extreme Elimination Challenge).
Eleven unwitting participants are thrown together into a city wide game in which they must split up into teams and make it across the finish line before their time expires. Each is fitted with a wrist band that reveals their location and time remaining. Removal of the wristband results in a lethal injection. Groups are intercepted along their route by henchmen. Proximity of henchmen is detected and signaled by the wristbands.
A kind of real life D&D, treasure hunt, survivor, laser tag, reality TV spoof.
This movie has the appearance of a student film or home made movie. It looks like it was shot on video tape and transferred to film, however the acting, special effects and gags are just as good as any American teenage slasher comedy, except is has the coolness of a video game, urban anime and Japanese game show all rolled into one.
I really liked it.
=Game Over=
The Avengers (1998)
Avengers, you're needed
I loved it.
The opening credits alone are astonishing, and sets the tone for a vintage movie that still holds up to this day If you are expecting another Tomb Raiser, Entrapment, or Aeon Flux, think again.
The Avengers was a very hip, very surreal spy serial which carries over superbly into the movie.
Sexy, smart, and oh so Britishly prim.
I give it ten pounds, and a shilling for the way they awarded a very transparent cameo.
Avengers, you're needed.
Wings of Fame (1990)
Without giving anything away...
This movie deals with the subject of fame and legacy in a hauntingly surreal fashion.
Though relatively unknown (and under celebrated) it truly is a masterpiece, and should be seen by everyone who is, was, or ever wished they could be "famous".
The Man in the White Suit (1951)
Touching, timeless, tumble dry.
In a funny, touching, brilliant way, this film examines the eternal debate over man's technology, his suppression of it, and the inevitable consequences of its effect on his fellow man.
A quiet classic.
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)
Chick Flick
Chick Flick.
The performances (other than George Sanders and Nanessa Brown) seem awkward and unrehearsed.
The mere mention of the name of Capt. Daniel's book, makes me giggle every time, and he finishes it off with all the naive simplicity of making a bed.
I can't believe the Lady Miur wastes the entirety of her beauty, youth, and life because of an untimely death, and one cad. I kept thinking that the ghost of her dead husband was going to show up, and beat the crap out of Rex Harrison.
The plot itself is clever, as the contrasting relationship between refined and gruff makes for a captivating and humorous tale. I'm sure the novel was even better.
All in all, a good film.

Electric Dreams (1984)
The timeless tale of a boy, a girl, and a computer.
Probably one of the best computer-romance movies of all time. A rare treat. Stylish. Seldom celebrated, but definitely in the same league as "2001", "Tron", and... "Blade Runner".
