The Waterboy (1998)
awful, boring and not a bit funny
I couldn't believe it. I finally rented the DVD and was all hyped to watch this "comedy". And then sitting there, looking at my wife and said, "what the hell is that?" A comedy is supposed to be funny and I haven't laughed a bit for the first half hour. If it was on TV, I skipped the channel right away. I tortured myself and watched the movie all the way to the end in the hope of getting any laugh out of it. Man was I wrong. This was one of the most unfunny "comedy" I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong, I like slpasticks, Beavis..., South Park, all different kind. I'm sorry, the critics were right this time - this is a piece of crap - don't waste your time on it.
The Peacemaker (1997)
How stupid they think is the audience
First of all I liked the movie. Very entertaining, nice actors. Too bad that Armin Müller-Stahl dies so early. B-U-T !!! There are a few things which might be over the top: What about the action sequence in Vienna. They ruin the whole inner city for half an hour with their cars and not a single cop shows up? Give me a break.
This is not a little continuity mistake in the movie. As an audience, I feel insulted. Somehow this seems to be a trend. (i.e. Lethal Weapon 4, tons of that careless action). I mean action is nice and entertaining, but it should make a little sense. Another one: Near the end of the Manhattan chase when they have the shooting in the alley. Clooney and Kidman just jump to cover when the bad guy shoots back after the other one gets hit. Cut. Both bad guys can escape (one badly wounded). Cut - Clooney and Kidman running to chase the two guys. Did I miss something. How long does it take to crawl out of their cover. Did they stop at the Starbucks inbetween? Also, keep the make-up artist under control - please. If Clooney has a bleeding wound on the side of his face and two minutes later you see him in a close-up with nice make-up and foundation. No-Way.
I don't trash action movies, I like them, but don't treat me as a dumb audience. With budgets up to $100 Mio you can't affort to be sloppy.
One Night Stand (1997)
A Great Movie
This is a great movie with amazing actors. One suggestion for all the people who give it a bad review: Rent the DVD and listen to the track with the directors commentary (the full length movie). What I read so far on reviews, including the official ones from all the Siskel and Eberts, they seem to misunderstand the movie. They are criticizing exactly what the director did on purpose. Watch the movie - watch the commentary version - watch the movie again. It is a great experience.
The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Another Disappointment
This is the second major hyped movie with a total disappointing result. (after "Saving Private Ryan") Like the other one it doesn't catch me, I'm not drawn into the movie. Instead I'm sitting there and analysing different aspects, i.e. nice scene, great effect, terrible scene, annoying or boring songs (all of them!). What happened to the great music like in the "Lion King". After "Antz" and "A Bug's Life" we know what computer CGI can make with animation movie. A stupid quote from one of the producers who praised the "special effects" in that movie: "with this animation movie we could create scenes, which we were unable to create in a real movie" - HELLOO! ever seen Buggs Bunny or the Road Runner? At least I learned the meaning of Passover. Even my Jewish friends couldn't explain it to me the last time I asked them.
Very Bad Things (1998)
sick and twisted and hilarious hilarious!
What is wrong with all these so-called critics. If you go to a restaurant and order a steak but the waiitress brings you a fish... don't try to comment on the taste. If you think you will get a nice little "Something about Mary" movie (which I really like) don't get upset and trash the movie if it is something else what you expected. Very Bad Things is a very dark, sick, great comedy and it is not for everybody. If you got the wrong idea, blame the advertiser or the studio and not the movie itself. i.e. in my opinion the "Star Wars" movies are totally boring but only because I don't like Science Fiction stuff, therefore "I" have the problem and not the film - get it?
