Soldier in the Rain (1963)
An underrated gem
The one line summary says it all. This is in my top 10 of all time. If you watch it for plot or if you think stars just play themselves, then skip it. It is a character study with Steve McQueen and Jackie Gleason giving the performances of their careers. Try to find it on tape and watch in a darkened room without commercials - it needs and deserves your attention.
Bicentennial Man (1999)
Pretty good in previews, may be excellent by opening
I saw this movie in a preview before the music, special effects, and editing were finalized. Robin was excellent as was Sam Neill. The story had some flaws - at one point I was ready for the movie to end - it had reached a climax - and it still had an hour to go. However it passed my test - I never once wondered what time it was and was not tempted to go for a popcorn refill. Even if you are not a science fiction fan, the human side of the story will win you over. Posthumous thanks go to Isaac Asimov for a great narrative.
