Quite dull, unsurprising and stays on the surface
5 February 2017
I was a proud Commodore user between 1985 and 1996, having owned an Amiga 500 since 1987 that was replaced by an Amiga 1200. I still own both, and they both still work! Furthermore, I was also part of the "Demoscene" and also part of a team that developed a commercial game.

I'm just telling you this so that you might understand that the Amiga was a very valued part of my youth, including visits to quite some Amiga fairs.

Unfortunately, this documentation only stays on the surface. There is nothing new, nothing surprising, and on top of that it even doesn't have a clear structure.

People that didn't know the Amiga and the hype accompanying this computer back then will not understand it and will be none the wiser after having watched this.

It was mentioned in other reviews that this documentation is very USA-centric, which is unfortunately true. Unfortunately, because it is agreed on that the Amiga had its biggest impact in Europe (in the UK and Germany, to be specific).

What is this documentation trying to achieve? To share some memories of people involved from the beginning like RJ Mical? To boast about its gfx/ video capabilities (by using the old but still impressive example with Deborah "Would you like to paint me?" Harry and Andy Warhol)? To prove that it's still being used by a few enthusiasts like the very valued 4Mat?

And where are the games and the demos? If I remember correctly, there's maybe 20 seconds of game footage or even less, and I didn't see any demos at all. (For me, demos is something that not only made the Amiga so special, but is one of the main reasons why the Amiga is still remembered by many and being used by some enthusiasts.)

The problem is, it never goes deeper. For example, especially for people that do not know the computer capabilities back then in the mid-80s - it's not enough to (wrongfully!) state that Apple was black & white, PC was green on black, and the Amiga had color and multitasking. There was nothing to help me as a viewer understand why the Amiga was such a breakthrough at that time. Sure, nearly all the interviewees mention it quite often, but if I didn't know the Amiga, I would ask myself: "OK, but - why was this such a sensation???"

The old advertisement footage was mostly nice, but in the end doesn't help the documentation.

And some things, like the "Revision" sequences filmed in Saarbrucken/ Germany, feel like completely out of place, just because the documentary never mentions the demo-scene, but all of a sudden we see a bunch of people sitting in a big, dark hall - "but what the hell are they doing there?" you might ask yourself...

I gave it a 5/10, because I recognize the effort that the director took to make this film, not being a professional filmmaker and such. But I certainly will not watch it a 2nd time. (And please don't quit your day-to-day job!)

And I really do not understand where the 30k funding money went into. Even in 2010, good and affordable equipment was available, and the travels couldn't haven been costly. (Maybe he had to pay fees for interviewing some of the people!?)

Barely amusing, well produced but without any personal touch
27 November 2016
I saw the ad, liked the idea and started Netflix a few minutes later. In recent years, there were quite some movies with the same basic setting that stood out and were fun to watch, e.g. "The Man Who Knew Too Little" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120483/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_49).

Unfortunately this movie will not become one to be remembered in a few years to come. It is an example of a streamlined, mass-production Hollywood blueprint without any surprises: Everyone with just basic knowledge of movies could easily predict what would happen next. It clearly had budget and the actors are good, but the story was - even with all these action scenes - rather slow and couldn't gain speed.

On top of that, this movie cannot decide whether it's a comedy or an action movie. People will get shot or killed otherwise throughout the movie quite explicitly (sometimes even with rather large sprays of blood), preventing it clearly from being suitable to minors. (Especially since killing of - even decent! - people is shown as nothing of great value.)

To state it clearly: If I would have had to pay admission for this, I would have been upset. Since it came with my Netflix package without extra charge, I was only slightly bored.

Bottom line: 100% average in all aspects, keep it on the long list for a long winter evening...

Complete piece of ...
29 May 2014
I just cannot believe what I paid 4,99 Euros for...

Just let me put it this way: This documentation really proves that, if you look desperately enough, you will find clues for everything - even where nothing can be hidden.

Continuity goofs become metaphors for ... whatever suits you, ... somebody wearing a sweater with "42" printed on it stands for the Holocaust that started in 19"42"... Danny wearing an Apollo 11 sweater is the proof that Kubrick faked the Moon landing...

The examples could be continued on and on, but in the end there really is nothing that would let you think twice about one or two of the "conspiracy" theories presented here.

Complete and utter bulls**t! Waste of my time & money!

Headache and sore eyes guaranteed
15 September 2007
Let's face it: This is a pretty hyped movie. It has lots of plot holes and no "soul" at all.

Most annoying is the way this movie is cut: Nearly every take is filmed with a handy-cam and zooms, trembles and pans. On top of this, the vast majority of takes is less than a few seconds, at least it feels like this.

My girlfriend got a headache because of this and left the theater, many of my fellow co-viewers felt the same after the ending, including myself.

This is a pity, because both the Bourne movies and books are a great franchise and Matt Damon surely does his best and shows some impressive action. I rather enjoyed the fact that you won't see the typical CGI-enhanced stunts with exploding cars and buildings that were fashion until late.

But, I ask you, what is all of this worth if you leave the theater with a headache and sore eyes? I rated this a 4 (the first part I rated 8 back then), and just because I like the characters and the settings. If it wasn't for them, this would have been a 2 or 3 at most. It eludes me why this movie is rated among the #250 of all time. Would the director have chosen a more relaxed way of filming, this movie would've gotten even better ratings as far as I and my friends are concerned.

Very disappointing...

Good movie, but not suitable for children!
25 December 2005
Just want to comment on some of the jungle scenes where the crew gets attacked by insects: These scenes make Alien look like sesame street! I'm not prissy, but that was truly repulsive and had nothing to add to the movie.

In Germany, this movie is rated suitable for children age 12 or older - I don't want to know how many of them had (or still have) nightmares.

Apart from that, it really was a nice movie...

But I still can't see why this much of violence and gore had to find its way into the movie.

Next time I'd like to see either less gore or a clearer rating.

3 out of 10 points for goodwill...
25 October 2005
... but several zillions were wasted.

To begin with: - Yes, I own the BBC Radio Shows - Yes, I read all the books - Yes, I own the BBC TV Series (on video, Laserdisc and DVD ;-) - Yes, I was excited when I heard about this movie and - Yes, the Trailer looked very funny indeed.

But, I have to admit, even though I tried to be objective, I just cannot like this movie.

Why?

It's just not a good movie! It has no rhythm, it is not (very) funny, and the part that stars John Malkovich is simply a waste of time.

That's sad, because they tried: You'll find many references to the books and the radio series, you'll even see good ol' Marvin from the TV Series, but you don't have the time to enjoy it, because all these things stay in the background, while the plot leads us relentlessly to the next scene. All the nice scenes (e.g. the Bypass-argument at the beginning, the Deep Thought scenes, vogon poetry) feel as if someone put them there because the fans would recognize it but at the same time they had to be cut in half in order to stay under 100 Minutes of running time...

Let's face it - my private opinion: They should have sticked to the BBC Series. Cut the Restaurant at the end of the universe-scenes and you'll have nice, funny, well balanced 120 Minutes of the Guide.

But like this - it was a waste of my time...

Positive moments: Zaphod is quite cool, and I enjoyed the cameo of veteran Arthur Dent from the BBC Series as Magrathean announcer.

Sorry Doug, this is surely not what your fans were waiting for two decades!

Complicated story, too much blood
5 July 1999
Well, to shorten things:

I do like Chow Yun Fat, and Mark Wahlberg also did a very good job, but both were trapped in the midst of a movie which plot wasn't good at all. I think, that this was obvious to the director, and so he decided to add more gore'n'blood.

(Not a BAD movie, though!)

Don't expect to be told about the meanings of life! In the end, it is all about friendship...

My all-time-favourit!
5 July 1999
This Movie has it all: Great story, great locations, great transitions ... and great music (Queen).

(Wow, I forgot: Great One-Liners)

Every once in a while, I watch that movie, and in an instant, I feel better. It is hard to explain, especially for those who aren't fond of that kind of flics.

But, for those who haven't seen that film yet - here is an advise: Look out for the Director's Cut, which features some very essential scenes that were missing in the usual english-spoken versions. (Scenes in WW2)

Also, the picture has much better quality.

By the way: I didn't like Highlander 3 and Highlander 2 was one big mess - there can be only one. So I am a bit sceptical about Highlander 4...

Great performance, great One-Liners!
17 June 1999
Could such a movie be possible in any country outside Great Britain? I don't think so. If you ever wanted to see "Take Fat" - go and see it!

Honest: You will both be caught by funny situations and great athmosphere.

Unfortunately too short ...
6 June 1999
There are some reasons why I enjoyed that flic:

Chow Yun-Fat is as cool as ever, and he shows a great performance as a good man who has been forced to be a killer by a real bad-ass.

Second, there is a nice Style throughout the flic. Especially the first scenes in that Disco, when Yun-Fat walks through the hall and that Acid-Track hammers your ears.

Third, I am a fan of Danny Trejo since I saw him in "From Dusk till Dawn". Together with Till Schweiger, who is very popular in germany, they form a very good Replacement-Killer-Team.

And last, but not least: Mira Sorvino is sweet, isn't she?

Nice Movie.
31 May 1999
Why did I watch that movie?

Well, because of Sean Connery. I just like watching him. He plays so smooth... And because of Catherine Zeta Jones. She looks terrific!

Apart from that, the movie is quite average. So, if you don't see it, you won't miss much!

Bye

Great fun! Me and my friends enjoyed all of it.
27 May 1999
Well, the Mummy has it all: Great F/X (especially the sandstorm and the fighting scenes) AND a good sense of humor. Don't get me wrong: There are many people dying, but you will laugh anyway...

I consider watching it again.

Have fun!

It could've been better, but it also could've been a lot worse!
22 April 1999
I saw this flic as a so-called "Sneak-Preview", and otherwise I would not have bought a ticket for that flic anyway. So keep in mind, that I'm not a big fan of romantic comedies.

However, in the end, I must admit, that I had a good time while watching. It had some good one-liners, and Sandra Bullock looked terrific.

I guess if you're fond of this kind of movies, you'll certainly like it. Give it a try!

The Matrix has me!
19 April 1999
Wow!

I got the chance to see the Matrix in original language way before german release date. What I saw was both intense and unique - never-seen-before special effects combined with a really good story.

I only noticed one negative thing - the trailer has an even better design (cut, music).

Unfortunately no-one can be told what the Matrix is - you have to see it for yourself...

Have fun!

A private must be saved by a rescue team behind enemy lines
16 September 1998
This movie is no doubt a must-see for everyone who still has the opinion, that war is a necessary thing. Never have I seen such dramatical and yet realistic scenes of war. There's one big message: War is the last thing you ever want to get stuck in! In my opinion, this movie exceeds even Schindler's list, which was excellent as well.
