It’s pretty common for limited series to be Emmy-nominated for both writing and directing, as demonstrated by current dual contenders “Beef” and “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” plus “The White Lotus” and the four 2022 shows it knocked out twice. The same cannot be said, however, for TV movies, which compete directly against non-continuing series in the composite Best Movie/Limited Writing and Directing categories. Prior to this year, no telefilm had achieved this nomination combo since 2014, but Hulu’s “Prey” just closed the gap, signaling a return to form for the genre.
“Prey,” which premiered in August 2022, is also gunning for the Best TV Movie Emmy and picked up bids for its sound editing, picture editing and music composition. Set in 18th century North America and featuring a primarily Indigenous cast, it serves as a prequel to the 1987 theatrical horror film “Predator,” which is now the nexus of a seven-part franchise.

With 4A Games’ Metro: Last Light turning the big 1-0 earlier this week (Neil and Jay covered the game on the Safe Room Podcast last week), the developer has decided to give those of you who still haven’t jumped into the Moscow Metro a chance to do so for free. That’s right, Metro: Last Light will be available for free for a limited time on Steam.
The official Twitter account for the Metro series posted the announcement earlier today that from May 18 to May 25, players can grab the original Complete Edition of Metro: Last Light on Steam. As you might expect, the Complete Edition includes the base game, as well as all of the Dlc. Just to be clear, this is not the same version as Metro: Last Light Redux, which is a remastered version of Last Light that was released back in 2014.

Wednesday Addams is taking the world by storm in a way that, thankfully, doesn't involve putting her twisted mind to work. Were you to ask the macabre teen herself, her version of world domination would probably involve piranhas, communing with the dead, and ridding the world of any color that isn't her signature despairing black. But the reality of her popularity isn't so bleak: It mostly manifests in TikTok dances, Halloween costumes, and some of the funniest fan edits that society has ever seen. Netflix's "Wednesday" is that kind of popular, as you've most likely noticed it trending at the top of the charts for many weeks.
Whether you sought it out or stumbled onto it via social media, you've definitely encountered the clip of Jenna Ortega's ultra-goth dance scene and maybe even considered trying it out yourself. Mileage on the show certainly varies — in her review, /Film's...

Who had Amazon supplying one of Netflix’s biggest original series on their 2022 bingo card?
The Jeff Bezos-owned company, after closing its 8.5B deal to buy MGM, is now responsible for Wednesday, which has quickly become its rival’s second biggest English-language series.
The Jenna Ortega-fronted show crossed the 1B hours viewed mark – only the third show to do that – in less than a month and overtook Dahmer to become the second most-watched U.S. show behind season four of Stranger Things.
A renewal is thought to be inevitable, although sources expect that will come in the new year rather than before the end of the year. Producers are starting to talk to writers about joining the second season’s writers’ room and mulling season two locations, and even though MGM has been restructured into Amazon Studios, under Jen Salke, no one expects that to derail future seasons.

Sydney Gallonde, the French producer of Make It Happen Studio, is set to re-team with MGM TV Intl. Productions on a biopic of Eugene Bullard, one of the first Black American military pilots who was also a boxer and a jazz musician.
Gallonde has acquired the book rights to Claude Ribbe’s biography of Bullard, which shed light on the man’s heroic life and drew headlines on French media across the country when it was published in 2012.
Like many Black American entertainers such as Josephine Baker, Bullard left America for Europe and France in 1914 to escape racial segregation, lynchings and prejudice. The young and adventurous man, who was born in Georgia, eventually settled in Paris looking for a better life and worked at a music hall. When WWI erupted, Bullard enlisted in France’s Foreign Legion along with other foreign volunteers, becoming one of the few Black combat pilots during the war.

Prime Video has had a rough track record with their science-fiction programming, with both "Paper Girls" and the J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek "Night Sky" getting the axe after just one season. However, the streamer is hoping to turn the tides with their new Chloë Grace Moretz-starring adaptation of "The Peripheral," based on William Gibson's novel of the same name. The series centers on a young woman named Flynne, who comes across a VR helmet that gives her the ability to be transported 70 years in the future. She thinks at first she's just in a dystopian game, but quickly realizes this is the world ahead. Now, Flynne is torn between enduring her rural existence in her own timeline, and being caught in a battle leading toward the impending fall of London.

Prime Video has been cranking out one sci-fi adventure series after another, with the latest being the Chloë Grace Moretz-starring adaptation of "The Peripheral." Based on William Gibson's novel of the same name, "The Peripheral" is the story of a young woman named Flynne, who discovers what she believes to be a virtual reality helmet that transports her to a timeline 70 years in the future, but soon discovers that this is not a game, it's a glimpse into the dystopian world to come. Now, pulled between her own reality of working grunt jobs in a rural area and an impending future that sees the fall of London's society as we know it, Flynne finds herself at the center of a battle she was never supposed to be a part of.
William Gibson's literary work helped pioneer the cyberpunk subgenre, with "The Peripheral" proving foundational for modern sci-fi stories like "Back Mirror.

In his first acting role in seven years, “Lost” star Matthew Fox plays Andy Yeats, a petrochemical scientist who discovers that the world’s oil supply has been deliberately sabotaged, leading to a worldwide crisis where planes fall from the sky and civilization teeters on the brink of collapse in Peacock’s five-part series “Last Light.”
Fox, who previously worked with director/producer Dennie Gordon on the ’90s series “Party of Five,” also steps into the role of executive producer for the first time for the series.
Ahead of its Thursday premiere, TheWrap spoke with Fox and Gordon as well as “Downton Abbey” alum Joanne Froggatt, who plays Fox’s wife, and Amber Rose Revah of “Marvel’s The Punisher,” who plays a British agent who might be an ally or an enemy of Yeats.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Last Light Season 1, Episode 1, “The Dawning.”] Peacock‘s new series Last Light is marking a big milestone for star Matthew Fox as it’s the actor’s first TV role since Lost more than ten years ago. While he made an impression on viewers as Jack Shephard in the former ABC drama, Fox is taking on the new role of Andy Yeats, a petro-chemist who is put to the task of identifying the problem with tainted oil, something that the world is highly dependent upon. As is seen in the opening episode, disruptions in the world’s oil supply make way for a chain reaction of problems. (Credit: Courtesy of MGM Television/NBCU/Peacock) Adding an extra layer of drama, when dragged to the Middle East on a business trip to identify this problem, Andy is also separated from his family who are going through a situation of their own.

Matthew Fox is back in action. The 56-year-old star is returning to the small screen for the first time since his fan-favorite TV series Lost ended in 2010 for Peacock's new limited series Last Light. His role as petro-chemist Andy Yeats, who is fighting to save the world from an apocalyptic oil crisis, comes seven years since his last acting gig in the 2015 film Bone Tomahawk. So what brought Fox out of retirement? "On a personal level, I wanted to executive produce for the first time in my career," he exclusively told E! News. "I had completed a bucket list of projects that I wanted to do in 2014 and I felt like I had accomplished what I set out to accomplish and was...

Matthew Fox played Jack Shephard on "Lost" from 2004 to 2010, winning Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominations for his performance. Since then, he went on to appear in a number of feature films but retired in 2015 following appearances in the movies "Extinction" and "Bone Tomahawk."
Now the actor is returning to the small screen for "Last Light," a limited series about the collapse of the global oil industry that premieres on Peacock on Sept. 8. Fox explained his decision to return to acting in a Sept. 5 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "I was very much attracted to the backdrop in which the story is set, the oil crisis, with this beautiful family unit separated by the crisis and trying to get back together and be reunited," he said, adding that he was also excited to work alongside manager and producer Bill Choi. "He's just become a very close, very good friend, and...

The increasing sense of precarity around the world’s infrastructure would seem to help Peacock’s “Last Light” resonate: The limited series depicts a disruption in the world’s supply of petroleum, setting off a major energy crisis and fears of global cataclysm. And yet the series never finds its gear, existing as a ripped-from-future-headlines thriller that’s neither particularly credible nor especially thrilling.
Here, Matthew Fox plays the chemist Andy Yeats, who finds himself drawn into the crisis; as the world lurches into a moment of uncertainty, he’s separated from his family, trying both to find his way to them and to do what he can to bring the world back to order. The family struggles seem calculated to wring emotion from viewers, with Andy’s son (Taylor Fay) gradually losing his sight in a way that tests the tender stoicism of mom Elena (Joanne Froggatt). There’s,...

It may not feel terribly fall-like outside yet, but the TV world is ready to flip seasons. After a few light weeks for premieres, the Sept. 7-13 period is notably busier: The NFL season begins, the Emmy Awards are on deck and there are a good number of season and series debuts across all platforms.

Peacock’s Last Light is a consistently inert environmental thriller that fails to deliver even the most minor thrills. But in reaching its bizarrely anticlimactic conclusion in only five episodes, none more than 44 minutes, it’s far too brisk to be mad at.
Peacock is hoping that Last Light might get some attention for Matthew Fox’s return to TV, but with less watchable goofiness than The Lost Symbol, the streamer’s short-lived Dan Brown adaptation — another cheap-looking international thriller with allegedly literary trappings — I’m pretty confident this will be another no-impact fizzle.
Last Light begins with Fox’s Andy Yeats — a weirdass reference to “The Second Coming”? — standing on a sand dune. He’s disoriented, or “lost,” if you will. After a burst of high-drama snippets from later in the series, we go back to two days earlier; it’s an...

Matthew Fox kept a mental checklist of things he’d like to accomplish in his career, and once every gig had been crossed out, he made a decision to “walk away from the storytelling business.”
Fox had starred in a pair of hit television shows in Party of Five and Lost, toplined a string of feature films, acted in a Western and jetted across the Atlantic to hit the stage for a play in London’s West End. Bucket list achieved. So, in 2015, the actor retired, taking what seemed like a final bow with back-to-back films Bone Tomahawk and Extinction before settling down in Oregon with his wife and two children.
Not so fast. Another small-screen challenge soon revealed itself. “One of the things that I had never done was executive produce and that was kind of, you know, haunting me a little bit like,...

"The worst case is unfolding." Peacock has revealed a trailer for a mini-series titled Last Light, which will be streaming on their service next month. This is being described as an apocalyptic disaster series, though it really seems like a freak out "we're afraid of change" maintain-the-status-quo concept more than anything. Here's the fear-mongering pitch: "Your family. Your world. What if it all disappeared tomorrow? If society were collapsing, how far would you go to save the ones you love?" So what's causing this disaster? The end of oil. Yes, the thing that we actually need to stop using for the sake of our planet's health and our survival as a species, is the resource in the "society will collapse without it" series. This is based on the novel of the same name by Alex Scarrow. Last Light follows a petro-chemist who discovers the world's oil supplies have been cut off.
