According to David, his mother Maureen uses ping-pong balls as eyes in her impression of Tina Turner. In the episode Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room (2018), Tommy says "I can't afford to go into a meeting with HSBC and someone's found me as Tina Turner with tights on my head and ping-pong balls for eyes." Both characters are played by Reece Shearsmith
Almost all of the diegetic music in this episode references Superman in the title or lyrics (Soulja Boy 'Crank That (Soulja Boy)', Laurie Anderson 'O Superman', Black Lace 'Superman'). Maureen calls David her 'Superman' in David and Maureen (2009) that these characters originate from.
The table lamp beside the bed is a facsimile of a prisoner wearing a face muzzle, in the style of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991). It has nothing to do with the character of Papa Lazarou from The League of Gentlemen (1999), which would make no sense in the context of Psychoville (2009), whence these characters originate.
