Chains is supposed to be a good dish
Anonymous_Priest18 March 2019
In defiance of a riveting and outstanding performance by Calistra Akenobo and a carefully crafted screenplay by Success Akpojotor, Chains is still loosely chained by technicality.

I fell in love with the dialogue (thanks to the scriptwriter once again) and a few good performances. Nonetheless, make no mistakes, the movie isn't perfect as I have yet to see a perfect movie. Ultimately, the cautious weave and soft treading on religious and karmic paths intrigued me through the admittedly heavy-handed direction and editing.

At the end of the day, Chains is caught up in a web of indecision on the kind of movie it wants to be. The mixing of themes of feminism, rape, and karma in a plate of "everyday life"; and serving it on a table of didacticism and seasoned with Christian moral values.

While she was fantastic whenever she graced the screen, aptly interpreting the naivety and desperation as well as wickedness and jealousy of her character who is unknowingly fulfilling the pronouncements of a curse spoken decades ago, Calistra Akenobo was not given ample time to showcase.

Again, 'Chains' is a dish moderately salted with themes of current mainstream tides sweeping rapidly across the earth. Its feministic stance was loud and subtle; and a fine weaving-in of Robert Greene's "48 Laws of Power" into the motion picture made it tasty. Despite the sour visiting of retribution of the parent's transgression on innocent children, its witty script is baked with humor and zest in almost every scene, especially Stella's (Calistra Akenobo) which is never a dull moment . Chains may be unpalatable at a point because of its making three innocent children pay for their forebear's mistake, but the message of forgiveness therapy is far-reaching for the human soul.

Chains may not be a great movie. It might not even be a good picture. But its power is embedded in the interpretation of its message.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around why one's children should suffer for one's sins. Second, you rape a girl, she gets pregnant, the family of the girl want you to do the right thing, you refuse and end up incurring a curse, and you think the curse won't work because accordion to you you're a child of God. Curses work when one's at fault. Nice story however, great scripting, wardrobe was ok, direction was shaky, cinematography had loopholes, acting was good.

This movie is in chains
igbejanet12 March 2019
CHAINS struggles to be an okay movie. Rather I believe the movie is struggling to break from chains. Some characters did not fit the roles they were cast for. The costume was 4/10. Who knotted the barristers tie before he appeared on set? (Shame on the costumer). Fine picture that was almost ruined by sound. Now to the score sheet: Story: 1/5 Script: 4/5 Acting: 3/5 Picture: 3/5 Sound: 1.2/5 Cinematography : 3/5 Direction: 2/5 Locations: 3/5 Make up: 0.2/5 Costume: 2/5 Casting: 2/5 Editing: 4/5 Props: 2/5 If my review was not helpful, just pass by or you will see me and other mermaids giving you sleepless nights in your dream.thankyou

I can't believe my mother sent me this movie in a bid to get me to join her in her Lenten fast to break family generational curses. I couldn't go beyond where the Barrister was praying with his client. You've been called to defend one's son in court and you start by praying with the said family? What happened to ethics? If there are such lawyers, they should be sacked and their licence revoked. We don't need God in the court room.

Nollywood has produced some embarrassing nonsense, but Chains narrowly escapes the classification because of its bringing up the theme of feminism to a religion (Christianity )that actually needs to understand it. Chains is actually not well-produced and directed but some of the actors are exceptional. I loved Calistra Akenobo and Josephine Agbonmwanre. But again, consider the writers who did well, very well.

Angry
gloriauneh6 March 2019
The tragedy in Chains upsets me. Sometimes like the Barrister said in this movie, "Lord aren't you cruel?" & "Why do you contradict yourself?" I'm angry right now.

"If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife..." You don't want a curse to take effect in your life, come to equity with clean hands.

Forgiveness therapy
gbolahonchris6 March 2019
The only thing I'm taking away from this movie is the doctor's advice to the afflicted. That when our spirits and emotions are sick, our bodies follow suit. A quite preachy picture but worth the time I devoted to it.

A Christian worship-themed drama
ifejason7 March 2019
A Christian 'worship-themed' drama co-written by Success Akpojotor (screenplay) and Presley Oriavbere (story).

A family of five is suffering because of the sins of their father, and another family of two is battles with affliction brought on them by 'unforgiveness': both turn to God to fix their scarred life, with the help of a clairvoyant barrister and a doctor who prescibes "forgiveness therapy" when is patient's case defies medical science. The motion picture stars a cast of actors among who Josephine Agbonmware, Calistra Akenobo and Sharon Erhonmwusuyi stood out.

The movie attempts at creating a melting pot where themes that should not be named -rape, feminism, and others- are cooked. I struggled with some of the actors' bad acting (at times) and notable was that of Presley Oriavbere who played Mr. James and Edgar Ogbeifun who played Daniel; but we shouldn't forget few good performances of Mrs Jane (Josephine Agbonmware), Stella (Calistra Akenobo), and Mary (Sharon Erhonmwusuyi).

It has a good message, but I doubt it will be inspiring to non-believers.

I do not like preachy movies but I applaud this one because of the supernatural sentence it gave the rapist. I hate rape, and we should all do.

One of the best Christian movies I've seen
godwinosas7 March 2019
This is one of the best Christian movies I've seen. I watched with my wife and we could relate. As persons whose parents had done some vile things and have their children pay, we could relate. Sadly, the world has been blinded by 'civilization'

The two sisters are great. I mean Stella and Mary. But why would Stella want to break a man's happy home because he hasn't got male children? It baffles me what the girl was thinking. Whatever she got served her right. She's mean.

good story, great scripting but...
anon_wuka12 March 2019
A corps member rapes a girl and the community couldn't report to law enforcement agents to lock the sick man away? The resolution was to place a curse on his lineage and bloodline? Did the violated put herself in the shoes of the unborn children of the cursed before placing a curse? I'd not be happy if I'm told that my predicament is because of my parents and I wouldn't wish that on my enemy. Aside that, good story, great scripting and fine acting (and that is the reason for my 1 star)

No closure
jumaiabbas21 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
No closure. So after the family was forgiven, Daniel wasn't released from prison? Mary didn't settle down? Stella didn't marry the father of her sons? I know life is unfair but give us closure.

Incompatibility but...
kaylaogiega19 March 2019
For the life of me I don't understand why such script would be given such director. The script and director are incompatible that the direction almost ruined the writing. Chains deserved better than this. A great disservice was done a beautiful writing. Lastly, what was the point in shooting the explicit rape scene? Mr. Director, whoever he is, with all due respect, you could have just showed us where he carried the girl into the woods, showed us where he flung her personal effects and that would have been enough. That graphic scene was all over the place.

Wobbly direction

Whatever happened to a good direction? You get a good script and make an attempt at ruining it? Cast with sentiments? Alright, be consoled by the prayer points. Bye!

Parents should pay for their sins and not their children becoming the scapegoats to suffer for their parents' sins. This is a trap.

What's this film's message? That children suffer for what they nothing about? For what their parents did in the past? Nonsense.

A Woman is battling stage 4 cancer and the medic preaches forgiveness to her? I don't get it. This doctor's licence should be revoked. Nonsense and nonsense and nonsense. This is the issue with organised religion: it's a virus. Why did I even watch this DVD? I want to puke.

Apt movie, anytime
gloriafrancis-561587 March 2019
Chains needs to be seen by many (believers and non-believers alike). It took me ten years to break free from a generational curse and I know what I'm talking about. The details I cannot share here. Thanks to the cast and crew for cooking this. Especially to Josephine Agbomwanre and Calistra Akenobo.

Good
iwujerome8 March 2019
The direction is quite stable. Performances are largely solid outside of a few moments that feel stunted and forced. But it's Barr. Emmanuel (played by Success Akpojotor) who sells the movie as the prayerful and clairvoyant legal practitioner who brings about the change in the cursed family, making them to go seek forgiveness from a past aggrieved. "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. You need not be a pastor or bishop or prophet or apostle to see into the supernatural world. All humans are supernatural and extraordinary, but some of us have turned off our supernatural side. No thanks to technology.

Chains is an attempt at victim blaming. As if raping her was not enough, she had to have cancer. The writers are wicked and very wicked.

No such thing as curses.
I456janeo12 March 2019
I don't believe in curses.there is good, there is evil, there is retribution, there is reward. LAW OF KARMA, that's what it is. But why would ones children pay for the sins of ones fathers?
