Pearry Reginald Teo, the Singaporean-born genre filmmaker behind the Bai Ling-starring The Gene Generation and Dmx‘s last movie, Fast Vengeance, has died. He was 44.
Teo died Thursday of an unknown cause in his home in North Hollywood, his rep Italia Gandolfo told The Hollywood Reporter.
The writer-director’s body of work included the Hellraiser-inspired Necromentia (2009) and The Assent (2019), a movie about exorcism that featured Tatum O’Neal and premiered at the Toronto After Dark Festival.
Teo also served as an executive producer on Warner Bros.’ Cloud Atlas, directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer.
The Gene Generation (2007), released by Lionsgate and made for a reported $2.5 million, starred Ling as a kick-ass assassin battling DNA hackers and included a cameo by Faye Dunaway.
Fast Vengeance (2021), starring martial arts star D.Y. Sao, centered on the world of underground motorcycle racing. (Sao and Teo would reunite for 2022’s Shadow Master.)

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios company, has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to The Accursed, the first feature from writer-directors Elizabeta Vidovic and Kathryn Michelle, which will be released in theaters and on demand November 12.
The horror film from Almost Normal Productions centers on Hana (Yancy Butler), who has spent 20 years suppressing a curse that was placed upon her bloodline, only to have a family member knowingly release it, forcing her to kill or to be killed.
Izabela Vidovic, Goran Visnjic, Maiara Walsh, George Harrison Xanthis, and Melora Walters also star.
“The Accursed sprouted out of our love of the horror genre. Imbued with rich Eastern European folklore, it explores our fear of all things lingering in dark corners and presses on our deep insecurity of being betrayed,” said Vidovic and Michelle. “Our characters have all become prisoners of their own device as they attempt to keep...

The big international box office news this week isn’t actually from the weekend — which was again led by Korea and saw continued ups and downs versus last session as moviegoers await new product. Instead, after 100 days of closure, French cinemas re-opened beginning Monday this week, and with at least 40 films programmed for the post-coronavirus walk-up of the nation’s theaters.
Some eager moviegoers didn’t even wait for Monday morning, with about 120 people heading to the 5 Caumartin cinema in the 9th arrondissement of Paris from 12:01Am on June 22 to see a sneak preview of local comedy Les Parfums. The situation was similar in Rennes, where folks also turned up at midnight to see a re-release of the Coen brothers’ The Big Lebowski.
Then from just after 9Am Monday morning, Ugc’s flagship cinema in Paris, Ciné Cité Les Halles, welcomed guests for its first screenings with ticket sales reaching almost normal levels,...

From the executive producers of Texas Chainsaw and Day of the Dead, The Assent is a new tale of supernatural terror from multi award-winning writer and director – and Nerdly fave – Pearry Reginald Teo.
In this fresh new horror, single father Joel (Robert Kazinsky) suspects his young son may be possessed. Struggling with his own mental health, he can’t be sure what’s real, and what exists in his imagination. He is aided by Father Lambert (Peter Jason) who seeks his own redemption after serving prison time for the death of a child during a failed exorcism. Lambert believes the boy has been marked by the Devil himself and, without intervention, Joel could lose his son forever.
Dazzler Media will release The Assent on DVD and Digital Download from 27th July 2020. Pre-order now on iTunes and Amazon, and check out the trailer and artwork below:...

It's been a couple of years since we've seen anything new from writer/director Pearry Reginald Teo but Teo is back with a new horror movie that looks particularly promising.
The Assent stars Robert Kazinsky as Joel, a single father whose son is not quite right. As a last-ditch effort, he employs the help of a priest who advises Joel that his son has been marked by the devil and the only way to save him is through an exorcism.
Yes, it's another religious horror film but The Assent seems a bit more interesting than the average possession movie - if only because of the fact that Kazinsky, a solid actor, is in it. The movie also stars Peter Jason, Florence Faivre, and Caden Dragomer.
What's more, Teo chooses to use traditional creature effects which, f...

The Toronto After Dark Film Festival is a ten-day fest that brings genre festival darlings to The Big Smoke. This year’s docket included The Assent, a slight twist on the demon genre wherein a father battling schizophrenia fights to protect his son, whom he suspects is either suffering from his disease, or is possessed by a demon. Struggling to maintain his grasp on reality, Joel does whatever he can to spare his son from demons, be they literal or figurative. I got to chat with lead actor and producer, Robert Kazinsky, about his work on this film along with some of his greatest horror and sci-fi hits and comic book aspirations.
Tell me about your experience making The Assent.
Robert Kazinsky: I’d never done a horror before. At this stage of my career, I’m really trying to push on. Last year, I did my first comedy, which was a real adventure.
