Episode Six - A Whole New World

It was one of the few times that seeing the villain's past didn't make me feel sorry for him but rather angry.

Bonnie and Clyde's life has barely begun, and Gypsy has already seen that the world is not a fairy tale.

The final scene with mini Gypsy being stuck in the wheelchair is very sad.

Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts as a flashback to 1991 when Gypsy was born. You could already feel the tension between DeeDee and her mother. Then it cuts back to the present, nick has a tray of brownies waiting for gypsy. Im glad they did not show the brutality of the murder, but shows the mental anguish of Gypsy. It cuts back to 1993 when Gypsy is 2 years old. DeeDee is arrested and serves 6 months in jail for check fraud, her mother looks after Gypsy while serving time. Her mother gets sick and DeeDee is "taking care of her". Gypsy was a normal kid, its terrible how the system failed her. Doctors should have taken Gypsy away feom her mom, and locked up for the rest of her life. Patricia Arquette and Joey King deserve an Emmy.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a great episode that gives an important backstory as to why Dede is the way she is. Margo Martindale is haunting as Dede's mother, and the audience gets an understanding of Dede's parenting ways.

Hard to watch

Performances excellent, but this was the hardest episode to watch so far, showing the evolution of Gypsy's treatment from birth, victim to her unstable mother.

On the Run

After Nick murders Dee Dee, he and Gypsy flee to a motel before leaving Springfield and heading to Wisconsin. Gypsy becomes severely stressed and anxious until they leave town.

In 1991, Gypsy's birth shows Dee Dee's possessive tendencies in the first minutes she's alive. Dee Dee believes there's something wrong with her. Dee Dee is arrested on felony check fraud and serves six months in prison. Her mother takes care of Gypsy. In 1993 she's released and thinks Gypsy is sick. In 1997, Dee Dee's mother gets sick and dies. Gypsy has a minor injury on the trampoline and Dee Dee rushes her to the hospital and gives her a wheel chair.

This episode moves the story along only a few days but we get to see background into Gypsy's childhood. Dee Dee is obsessive with Gypsy from the moment she's born. It's very interesting to see Gypsy's upbringing since she looks like a normal, healthy girl. After Dee Dee's mother died, there was no one left to care for Gypsy except for Dee Dee.

Warning: Spoilers
The Act - Episode 6 Continuing my marathon and what an interesting episode. I think it's the first time I see the villain's past (villain in this case) and I don't feel pity, compassion or anything like that for her and just more sadness for everything Gypsy went through. Gypsy was the only victim in the whole case. DeeDee's mother was unbearable and belittled her but it's not even close to everything Gypsy went through. DeeDee needed a psychologist/psychiatrist to be able to take proper care of her daughter. It gets to be very difficult to watch and see the beginning of Gypsy's wheelchair, and she just fell and hurt herself. Since Gypsy was born, DeeDee wanted to put illnesses in Gypsy so she could take care of her. I know that what DeeDee wanted was her own mother's love and that she wanted Gypsy to see that she loved her but it was in a very wrong way. The final scene of mini Gypsy (getting stuck) in the wheelchair is sad. Gypsy seeing that her crush is not a prince charming nor that the world is a fairy tale. Episode six watched on March 14, 2024.
