Exclusive: Jordan Peele‘ s Monkeypaw Productions is getting back on the documentary horse and is using his movie Nope as inspiration.
The Get Out filmmaker is producing a documentary series that dismantles the whitewashed mythology of the cowboy for Peacock.
Produced through his Monkeypaw Productions label, Peele is producing the untitled series with Universal Television Alternative Studio as part of his overall deal with Universal Studio Group.
The series is inspired by themes from his movie Nope, which starred Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as horse-wrangling siblings attempting to capture evidence of a UFO in Agua Dulce, California.
The docuseries will rewrite a foundational piece of American history, unmasking the forces that erased the identity of the Black cowboy from frontier history and present.
Keith McQuirter, who directed MGM+’s By Whatever Means Necessary: The Godfather of Harlem, will serve as showrunner, director and exec producer.

Hip hop is a multi-billion-dollar musical movement that is now at the center of mainstream culture.
It’s grown into something bigger than anyone who attended Cindy Campbell’s 1973 end of summer party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the West Bronx – widely considered ground zero for hip hop – could ever have expected. That night, Campbell’s 16-year-old brother Clive, otherwise known as DJ Kool Herc, was behind the decks and is credited with kicking off the genre.
Now, Showtime is celebrating nearly 50 years of hip hop with a three-year project that will bring together numerous films, documentaries, television series, podcasts and digital projects exploring the history, the people and the music.
It is a partnership between the ViacomCBS network and Nas-backed film, TV and music company Mass Appeal.
The project is being shepherded on the Showtime side by EVP, Non-Fiction Programming Vinnie Malhotra, who grew up listening to artists like Tribe Called Quest.

Showtime has released a trailer for “Bitchin’: the Sound and Fury of Rick James,” a new documentary directed by Emmy-nominee and hip-hop journalist Sacha Jenkins (“Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men”). Judging by the trailer the doc aims to present an accurate look at one of the most controversial and confrontational figures in the history of R&b and popular music.
James, who died in 2004, is known for his 1980s hits like “Super Freak” and “Give It to Me”; his prison term for a sexual misconduct; and of course Dave Chappelle’s famous parody. Yet as documented in the trailer, his confrontational nature — he was very upfront about his sexual and drug habits, among many other things — have clouded the perspective on his music and his importance, particularly in advancing Black music into the video age. His videos for “Super Freak” and other hits were, along with Michael Jackson’s,...

For most adults under the age of forty, “I’m Rick James, bitch” was a statement of intent. The artefactual pop-culture catchphrase stems from The Chappelle Show sketch “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories,” which catapulted the “Super Freak” hitmaker back into public consciousness. The segment didn’t simply pitch the singer-songwriter-producer as an easy, unfortunate punchline. It added to his mythos: People wanted to know about the coke-fueled parties, the abundant orgies, and the other major celebrities James crossed paths with.
Director Sacha Jenkins (“Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men”) scratches the itch that first surfaced in 2004 when the Chappelle Show sketch premiered.

Hip-hop has grown from a party in a South Bronx basement to a global soundtrack over its 47-year run. And as it approaches the 50-year mark, some of the genre’s originators have made it their mission to ensure that the milestone is celebrated in a way befitting of its influence.
Among those taking the reins in telling the story of hip-hop is rapper and Mass Appeal partner Nasir “Nas” Jones (pictured) along with Mass Appeal chief creative officer Sacha Jenkins, writer, director, and producer of the Emmy- and Peabody-nominated Showtime series “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men.” Returning to the cable network, “Hip Hop 50” highlights the genre’s dense history through the lens of different participants and delves into the sub-cultures birthed from its rise.
As Nas tells Variety: “There are so many more stories. I’m opening up with this, but ‘Hip Hop 50’ is a multi-tier initiative, created...

The documentary will examine Armstrong’s life and legacy as a founding father of jazz, the first pop star and a cultural ambassador of the United States. Additionally, Jenkins’ film aims to unscramble the misconception that the New Orleans trumpeter didn’t do enough to support the Civil Rights Movement.
Produced under Apple’s first-look agreement with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries, the film will be directed by Sacha Jenkins.
With the full support of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, the filmmakers were granted access to a wide array of never-before-seen archival materials including hundreds of hours of audio recordings, film footage, photographs and personal diaries.

Apple Original Films has greenlit a documentary feature about the life of jazz great Louis Armstrong titled “Black & Blues” that Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Documentaries will produce.
“Black & Blues: The Colorful Ballad of Louis Armstrong” will be executive produced by Grazer and Howard and directed by Emmy nominee Sacha Jenkins (“Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men”). The film is being produced under Apple’s first-look agreement with Imagine Documentaries.
“Black & Blues” offers a definitive look at the master musician Louis Armstrong’s life and legacy as a founding father of jazz, the first pop star, and a cultural ambassador of the United States. Though Armstrong was loved by millions worldwide, he was often mischaracterized for not doing enough to support the Civil Rights Movement. But his fight for social justice was fueled by his celebrity and his willingness to break his silence on issues of segregation and patriotism.

A+E Networks announced a trio of new documentary projects on Wednesday, led by its second collaboration with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The NBA legend and racial justice advocate will executive produce a documentary film for History Channel about protests.
“Fight the Power: The Protests That Changed America” will look at the impact key protests have had on the evolution of the U.S. and will explore the question: Does the arc of the moral universe bend toward justice when pressure is applied? Abdul-Jabbar will executive produce with Deborah Morales of Iconomy Multi-Media & Entertainment and the Six West Media Group.
“The history of protest in America is also the history of social progress,” Abdul-Jabbar said. Last year, he received an Emmy nomination for narrating the documentary “Black Patriots: Heroes of the Revolution.”

BET Plus has ordered the original series “Birth of Cool” in its first-ever partnership with “Gentefied” producers Macro Television Studios and Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and actor Lena Waithe’s production house Hillman Grad Productions.
The 10-episode half-hour dramedy marks Waithe’s third original production with the brand— her other two series with BET are “Twenties” and “Boomerang.”
“Birth of Cool” follows the adventures and misadventures of both students and teachers at Crispus Attucks High, a predominantly black high school in Compton, as they try to make it through the weird, hilarious, stressful, often sobering, and sometimes surreal academic year while hopefully growing a bit in the process on and off-campus.

Mipcom – the largest international TV market – is changing fast and buyers and sellers are figuring out how to respond to the ever-shifting global landscape.
The corporate consolidation that has been the talk of the Croisette for the last few years has started to have a real-world impact on the distribution business, while the evolution of the streaming services means there are more complex negotiations taking places than ever before. On one chilly January night in Utah, Sacha Jenkins turned the Sundance Film Festival into a raucous Wu-Tang Clan reunion, assembling luminaries including the Ghostface Killah, Cappadonna, U-God, Masta Killa and the legendary hip-hop ensemble's producing impresario The RZA. The crowd, which featured a thicker-than-Sundance-average haze of marijuana smoke and more expletive-filled call-and-response, roared through the first two hours of Jenkins' four-hour Showtime documentary Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men.

Just minutes before premiering “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men” at New York’s Beacon Theatre Thursday night during the Tribeca Film Festival, director Sacha Jenkins stepped up to the podium and gave a “freestyle” for his speech, emphasizing that the Wu-Tang Clan story is an American success story.
“I wanted to make a film to help people understand who these folks are and how they are a reflection of, and a reaction to, the environment that they come from,” Jenkins said, adding why he decided to name the four-part docuseries “Of Mics and Men”: “We all know the American classic, ‘Of Mice and Men,’ and oftentimes as black artists, we are put in a black box and they want us to talk about our art during Black History Month.

Last Year’s Winner: “Wild Wild Country”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Since Netflix earned its first nomination (and win) in the category, only Netflix original series — or series that have benefitted from streaming on its platform — have won the category. “Making a Murderer” broke through for the digital giant in 2016, earning the initial nod and win, while “Wild Wild Country” took home the title again in 2018. In between, “Planet Earth II” won for BBC America (while “Chef’s Table” and “The Keepers” were nominated as Netflix originals). The initial “Planet Earth” and its sequel both stream on Netflix (and have for some time).
Fun Fact: In the 21 years this category has been active (it was called Outstanding Nonfiction Series before this and Outstanding Informational Series before that), PBS has won in 14 of those years and has 15 trophies, thanks to two of its programs tying in 1999. There has never been...

Exclusive: Deadline broke news last Wednesday that Netflix had won a heated auction for the Sundance documentary Knock Down the House, but it wasn’t immediately clear how much the picture sold for. I can reveal that Netflix paid $10 million for worldwide rights to a film that yesterday received Sundance’s coveted Festival Favorite Award.
By my count, that makes Knock Down the House the biggest documentary sale ever brokered at a film festival, this for the Rachel Lears-directed film that followed the campaigns of congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and three other candidates who ran against incumbents in the elections last fall, shaking up the status quo and bringing fresh blood into Congress.
Long marginalized in comparisons to narrative films, documentaries have entered an unprecedented golden age, one that is only going to get better, as studio-backed subscription streaming services will seek out these films in the next year or...

It’s a familar story: Caleb Jaffe came to Sundance with nothing but a dream. After spending his college tuition money to make a low-budget indie, the 21-year-old filmmaker finished his project, submitted to the festival, and joined the thousands of hopefuls waiting on a phone call that could lead to the career-making experience of a lifetime.
“I didn’t answer the call because I didn’t recognize the number,” Jaffe said. “I let it go to voicemail, but then I looked at the transcription and saw the word ‘Sundance’ and ‘film’ and I sort of had a moment where I thought, ‘Oh God — maybe I got in!’”
Filmmakers converge on the 10-day festival, hoping it will make their dreams come true. However, Jaffe marks a new kind of talent: He made a pilot, not a movie, and he’s part of a 2019 TV class that saw big gains in attention,...

After much speculation and hints over the past few years, “The L Word” is finally returning to the air.
The original series, which ran for six seasons between 2004 and 2009, followed a core group of lesbian women as they navigated love, friendship, and everything else life in West Hollywood has to offer.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, Showtime’s President of Entertainment Gary Levine revealed that the show would be returning for an eight-episode run, planned to premiere as soon as the end of this year.
While this new series will expand beyond the central group of existing characters, Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig, and Leisha Hailey will all reprise their roles. Original “L Word” creator Ilene Chaiken is also returning as an executive producer, while Marja-Lewis Ryan will take over showrunning duties.
As Thursday’s announcement also explains, “In this revival, Beals, Moennig, and Hailey will star on...

One year ago, the Sundance Film Festival opened its doors to independent television. In the same way Robert Redford’s Park City playground built bridges between Hollywood’s longstanding studio world and the open-air, burgeoning indie film space, so too did the festival want to connect a booming television industry with the creative minds operating outside of it.
“Last year was such an experiment,” Sundance programmer Charlie Sextro told Indiewire. “It was [set up] to see what worked and what made sense.”
Like any first trial, the inaugural Indie Episodic Section had its successes and slip-ups. Sundance operated as it should: connecting fresh talent with eager buyers, but the atmosphere around television was far different from the one for film. Multiple TV projects sold to vaunted distribution platforms (like Starz and FX), while attendance issues created a conflicting in-the-room perception of the screenings’ overall impact.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

The Sundance TV slate has its biggest headline of this year’s festival in the form of Lilly Wachowski’s next project. The filmmaker will serve as producer, co-director, and co-writer on a new series based on the indie episodic pilot “Work in Progress,” debuting next week in Park City. It will be her first project since working on the first season of the Netflix series “Sense8.”
Abby McEnany starred in the Tim Mason-directed pilot, which is scheduled to be part of the 99-minute “Indie Episodic 1” block screening three times between Tuesday and Thursday. “Work in Progress” is based on McEnany’s solo show, originally produced at the iO Theater in Chicago back in 2016.

Showtime is about to get C.R.E.A.M-ed. The premium cable net has picked up North American rights to Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men, a documentary series that examines the cultural history of the hip-hop mega-group.
The docuseries is directed by Sacha Jenkins, whose relationship with the group dates back to the early ’90s when, as a co-founding publisher of one of hip-hop’s first zines, Beat Down, he gave the group its first cover. The project is described as transcending the music documentary genre by creating a new lane that merges music, socio-cultural commentary and intimate family portrait. Its first two episodes will premieres at the Sundance Film Festival this month, and Showtime will air the entire four-parter in the spring.

Showtime has acquired the North American rights to “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men,” Sacha Jenkins’s documentary series on rap group Wu-Tang Clan.
The four-part series, which will debut the first two episodes during the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 28, will air on Showtime this spring.
“The Wu-Tang Clan is a seminal group that deserves a seminal documentary,” said Vinnie Malhotra, executive vice president, nonfiction programming, Showtime Networks Inc. “Sacha Jenkins delivers just that, not only reminding us of their powerful history through vintage footage, but also placing their impact in modern-day perspective that will be meaningful both to their diehard fans and music fans in general. I’m excited to be returning to Sundance with Sacha years after his directorial debut with what I believe to be his best work yet.”
