All of the movie theater scenes were shot on the Universal Studios backlot.
This episode was co-written by show creator Tim Doyle and his wife writer Ellen Svaco Doyle.
This episode represents a jump forward in the chronology of the show. It takes place in February of 1973 (Valentines Day) while the bulk of the stories in this series take place during the summer and autumn of 1972 -- with the exception of the Christmas episode, which also jumps forward. Episode 15, "Nine Birthdays" consists entirely of flashbacks beginning in January of 1972 and leading up to the summer.
This episode went a bit over budget largely because of two elaborate stunts: Frank and Eddie's slow-mo backyard water ballet where Eddie falls off the roof and down onto Mike's brick porch, and Joey wowing a packed talent show audience by riding a mini-bike upside down in a circus Globe of Death. Both involved stunt performers and elaborate special effects to pull off.
Because this story takes place outside the series' normal time-line (the summer of 1972) the younger boys are seen in their Catholic grade school uniforms for the first time. Eddie's girlfriend Wendi has also evolved her hairdo, going with a more up-to-date 1970s look.
