Sour Grapes
Prismark1026 January 2020
The killing of a family dog and threatening letters leads to Miranda and Max visiting the wine country of Mallorca.

The vineyard is owned by the elderly Hans Weber but he is dying of cancer and wants to return to Germany.

The vineyard is run by his daughter and son in law who uses hi tech equipment. Suspicion falls on the neighbouring vineyard.

Another breezy episode. Max is a wine buff and has a promise of a vintage bottle if he finds the dog killer.

A lot is packed in this episode, several suspects and deep buried secrets.

Very good, but not a favorite

"Sour Grapes" is an episode I was looking forward to watch. The reviews for this episode have been great and the story felt very compelling too. Fortunately, I was not disappointed with "Sour Grapes". It's not a great entry to the series in my opinion, but a very good one indeed.

Let's start with the good aspects, shall we?

. The production values are excellent as usual for the series. "Sour Grapes" is well-directed and the music fits the scenery. The acting's strong all around.

. The story starts off indeed in a very light tone, but then builds to something a lot more deeper. I was pleasantly suprised of how dramatic the narrative got.

But...

. The solution was not as shocking as I thought it was going to be. The identity of the dog killer (the woman who was having an affair with one of the suspects) was quite obvious to say the least.

Overall, very good, but not a favorite.

8/10 HK.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Vineyard

Warning: Spoilers
Welsh-British actor Elen Rhys plays Miranda Blake and Austrian-German actor Julian Looman plays Max Winter in this episode that's mostly set in a vineyard, kind of a bottle episode rather aptly, as it's bottles of wine that are at the core of Sour Grapes.

Anyway, here a dog is killed at the beginning, and we wonder who would be so ruthless to do such a despicable act. Anyway, there are some twists and turns as we transition from scene to scene, and the sunny weather was a valuable part of this episode. Anyway, I'm really enjoying catching up on Mallorca Files and seeing the chemistry between the two leads.

The grapes here are very sweet.

Max and Miranda are called in when a family's pet dog is killed in their vineyard, suspected are the owners of a nearby and rival vineyard.

I think this has been my favourite episode of this first series, what started out as a very light story became something much more intriguing, and certainly more dramatic. Production values are tremendous, it looks glorious, the use of location, camera work and music are all terrific.

The pair shine, their chemistry truly coming to life, they are supported by a strong cast, including Wolf Kahler, who adds a real touch of quality.

The outcome will come as a surprise, once again this show is giving many of the mainstream shows a run for their money.

Great mix of humour and drama, I loved this one. 9/10
