Eli warned us about "schmuck bait"...
X-the-Unknown3 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Excellent overall, but the tone, both literal and figurative, music and actors' expressions, of the last couple of minutes was a low blow by the producers.

If they had used happy ending music or even the show's theme, and had most characters except Josh kind of smiling thinking "yeah, this fits", it would have been basically "the end", but nooooooooooo, instead they do what Eli warned us about, they hit us with dark tones to turn the ending into schmuck bait, fishing for a season 2, making people think there is something dark about the ending.

That fishing is also why they didn't show Burr definitely, positively, completely dead, another bit of smuck bait-- I bet his fate is in Broderick's hands... if he signs on, Burr'll be back. about "Schmuck bait"...

Season One Review
southdavid5 December 2019
I have a lot of mixed feelings about "Daybreak". There were elements that I liked, elements that I didn't. . but I did watch all of it and I think I'd watch more, if a second season was produced.

Following a nuclear/dirty bomb apocalypse that leaves all adults transformed into braindead blood-hungry wraiths, the teenagers of Glendale form themselves into groups based on their social traits or interests and battle for territory. Into this terrain steps outsider Josh Wheeler (Colin Ford) a Canadian student who transferred to the school and as such has no social circle, but he did have a girlfriend, Sam (Sophie Simnett) and he begins a quest to reunite with her.

As I said, there were elements of the show I really liked. It reminded me a lot of the Xbox game "Sunset Overdrive", the mutated humans, the wild gangs of kids with OTT gimmicks, even the skateboarding felt like it might have been a nod. I enjoyed the 4th wall breaking narration and the nods within that to the other films that utilise that device. I thought the visual effects were really good, the CGI work especially is good. My favourite aspect though was how quickly "Daybreak" began playing with the form of the show, passing the narration on to other characters, changing how flashbacks worked and how deceptively intelligent it was with foreshadowing. Another key factor, and the one that probably got me through the run is that I actually liked the characters and was interested in what would happen. There are a couple of romances, a few switched allegiances and some twists along the way.

Where it's less successful is tonally, it is a bit all over the place. There's an episode towards the end that explains the true nature of Sam and Josh's relationship that, whilst making a number of valid (if perhaps a little dated) points about present day social conformity and prejudices - feels wildly out of place in a series with its' Ronin warriors, mutant squirrels and cannibal villains. Some characters earn their redemption arcs whilst other seem to have it foisted upon them with a quick flashback. Also, a few bits of the story disappear without a trace and are never explored or explained.

So yes, kinda wayward and I understand the people that dropped it after a couple of episodes as it does take a bit of getting used to but it had enough for me and if the second season does come to fruition, I'll be back.

The problem with sam
im_notfreddie12 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Sam drags down the series and especially this episode since we never get to know who she is instead we have a person who is always nice and friendly to everyone who keeps insisting they are not who people think they are. Josh and Sam have known each other for months by the time of the apocalypse and the show expects us the to think she is going to be the bad guy for the next season.

However the principal (baron triumph) is brilliant and played excellently being funny and intimidating in some scenes. Turbo is good as well and one of my favourite scenes in this episode is the duel between him and Wesley even though I don't get the reason why they have to kill one or the other.

The side characters are by far the best part of this show the main highlights being Wesley and Angelica with their episodes being the best of the series.

The cancellation of the show really damages this episode because if they developed some more of the ideas in the second season maybe they would have been great but since we got so much set up there wasn't much payoff

Could have done a lot better
chbua28 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The payoff we had been waiting for doesn't actually happen, instead they decide to make sam's character even worse than she already was. The fight and conclusions end up being kinda cringe. Not sure this show will last that long...

The Episode that wasn't needed
azuloko27 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
They really try to stretch the "woke" vibe of the show in the end, but it just end up being cringy and annoying. The end just make you hate Sam and make the whole show pointless, they hype up the Josh and Sam couple the whole show just to end it like that, they should just remake the last 5 minutes of the episode and re release it.

Warning: Spoilers
Personally I really enjoyed the series, but I feel as though there were much better endings which the show could've had.
