The Mexican War of Independence actually started in the state of Guanajuato. In the small town of Dolores, Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his church and called the town to arms. They marched through present-day San Miguel de Allende and onto the City of Guanjuato, where the first battle of the war occurred.
Guanajuato is famous for its tunnels, which help manage traffic in the city center. The first tunnel, "Túnel La Galereña", was originally in the early 19th century to divert the Rio Guanajuato which originally flowed through the heart of the city.
This cathedral, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato (Basílica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato), is a Roman Catholic Basilica from the 17th century known for a statue of the Virgin Mary dating back to the 8th century. It is thought to be the oldest piece of Christian art in Mexico.
This market, the Mercato Hidalgo, was originally constructed to be a railway station in 1910, named for the priest who launched the Mexican War of Independence.
