The song "Watermelon" was written for the film as a collaboration between Emily Skeggs (Patty) and writer/director Adam Rehmeier. On their second day in Detroit, Rehmeier had Skeggs write stream-of-consciousness poetry as her character, and they created and recorded the song in a day.
Simon (Kyle Gallner)'s alias is "John Q. Public". When he writes letters to Patty (Emily Skeggs) he addresses her as "Jane Q." The song "Watermelon" is credited to "John + Jane Q. Public".
The cast spent two weeks in rehearsals before filming began-unusual for film productions-as a way to get to know each other and get comfortable with their characters.
