Master class in acting and storytelling

I don't give 10... This was a 10.

I showed it my sister for the first time tonight. Afterwards she wouldn't believe me that it was intended as a music video. It feels more like a mini silent film, with one hell of a soundtrack. Every second and every detail matters. Nothing is wasted. Sissy and David are the best of the best and they are putting on extraordinary performances for the lucky few who know about this music video. I'll never get enough of this video/movie.

Certainly above-average for a music video

Warning: Spoilers
Here we have the music video for the song "Oh Baby" by LCD Soundsystem. This was released in 2018 and directed by Rian Johnson, the man whose most known works feature actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt if we ignore his Star Wars contribution for a second. So with a such unusually successful director in charge of the music video, it should also not surprise anybody that the cast is sublime too. The two main characters, an elderly couple, are played by Oscar-nominated actor David Strathairn and Oscar-winning actress Sissy Spacek. The two are scientists and work on a formula and theory thanks to which you can enter a gate at one place and get out of another gate on another place. They use balls to check their theory and chicken and it actually seems to work out. Until tragedy ensues from a completely different perspective. Two robbers enter the gate (nice reference) to their house and shoot Spacek's character. The last shot is difficult to interpret really. I don't think the husband has gone insane, but all physical reason seems gone and it's all about hope at that point perhaps that the injured molecules will be put together in a way that cures his wife and heals her? That would be my guess. Maybe I am incorrect. The outcome is completely unexpected anyway. Men are no chicken. Well, some are. Anyway, with which I am 100% correct though is the assumption that this was a quality watch. A fun little video, even though pretty sad in the last act. The song did not do too much for me, but I focused more on the plot and actors anyway that are definitely good enough for a full feature film involving this story. I have heard better from LCD Soundsystem I believe. But if you really like the band, then maybe you will like the song too and the music video even more. It's kinda nice to see these established actors being featured in here as I am sure young audiences will have no idea who these people are, but maybe they will check out the names and admire their long career in the industry afterwards. I have not seen too much from Strathairn in recent years, but Spacek I just saw the other day in Redford's farewell movie. But lets not drift away, this music video here is if we only focus on the visual side a contender for 2018's finest. I certainly recommend checking it out. I also found it a bit touching. But yeah with the song and ending slightly decreasing in quality, I cannot give more than 3 out of 5 here. But as my rating refers to the movie perspective, it is fairly solid. As a music video I would have given it probably two stars more even. Don't miss out.
