According to the author, it is "the biggest thing Netflix has done in India so far", and is made along the likes of Game of Thrones.
The author reasons adapting the novel as a series, saying, "Given the story's dark and violent tone, the current censorship rules won't allow for it to be made as a film".
Part of the series is based on Anand Neelakantan's 2017 novel The Rise of Sivagami.
It is the third original from Netflix to be announced in India, after Sacred Games and Ghoul.
The series is a prequel to "Baahubali: The Beginning" and follows the character Sivagami as she consolidates her power in the kingdom of Mahishmati.
