Prime Video Mexico is firing up a new original series, “Mentiras,” based on the popular Mexican stage musical.
Singer-actor Belinda and Luis Gerardo Méndez lead a stellar cast that includes Mariana Treviño (“A Man Called Otto”), Diana Bovio (“Lecciones para canallas”) and Regina Blandón (“Maquíllame otra vez”).
Gabriel Ripstein, whose credits include series “An Unknown Enemy” (“Un extraño enemigo”) and Berlin best first feature winner “600 Miles,” created the series and will serve as director and showrunner.
“In this adaptation, we will pay tribute to a story and characters that the audience adores and expand their universe, thanks to a completely innovative visual narrative,” Ripstein said. “To bring this story to life, told with more than 30 of the most successful songs of the ’80s, we have assembled a spectacular cast and crew.”
The move comes despite system-wide cutbacks announced in January that have seen layoffs across Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios and livestreaming platform Twitch.

The European heads of Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max and Paramount+ have talked up their autonomy from the U.S., with Amazon Studios Europe boss Georgia Brown stating: “In my head we’re a European streamer.”
Speaking during a Berlinale Series panel, Brown said the local teams she has assembled after a “challenging” hiring period are completely distinct from the U.S. operation, as Amazon gears up to roll out several European dramas over the coming year.
Brown used the example of the German division’s adaptation of Wolfgang Hohlbein’s The Gryphon as proof that the streamer in Europe is making “elevated shows that can sit alongside U.S. juggernauts like The Wheel of Time and Lord of the Rings.”
“It’s alien for me to hear people say ‘The Americans have commissioned this’ because we’ve always been doing these things on the ground,” she said. “Years ago...

Amazon Prime Video is bowing a new Amazon Original feature-length documentary, “13:14,” produced by Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell’s 3Pas Studios. The doc, starring content creator and actor Juanpa Zurita, will debut exclusively on Apv next year where it will be available in 240 countries and territories worldwide.
“13:14” follows Zurita’s journey as he leads reconstruction efforts after the devastating earthquake that struck Mexico in 2017 at exactly 14 minutes after 1 pm, hence the title.
When the earthquake lays waste to the capital and various towns in Mexico, Zurita uses his influence to galvanize help from friends that include actors, singers, content creators and several others to raise funds and help in the reconstruction process. While managing to secure the help of Mexico’s leading architects, Zurita and his team’s inexperience in managing a reconstruction effort lead to a series of challenges, including charges of pocketing the funds they helped raise.

In an unprecedented move, Kate del Castillo’s Cholawood and Fabrica de Cine’s Gaston Pavlovich, producer of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and “Silence,” have teamed up with Endemol Shine Boomdog (Esb) to co-produce “El Agente Mexicano” (“The Mexican Agent”).
The series is loosely based on the true story of Francisco García, a young photographer who is recruited by the CIA after inadvertently saving President Kennedy from an assassination attempt during a 1962 visit to Mexico.
In the first season, now being penned by Rodrigo Ordoñez, the naive photographer transforms into a genuinely ruthless spy. Carlos Bolado is attached to direct what promises to include elements of action, suspense and a good dose of romance. Esb’s head of scripted, Leo Zimbron oversees the production, which will likely run for multiple seasons.
In 2019, the Spanish-language division of Endemol Shine North America inked an overall development and production pact with Pavlovich.

With global screen sectors increasingly in flux thanks to the aftershocks of an unprecedented pandemic coupled with intensifying streaming wars, it would be easy to see why execs in the business could feel a little on the apprehensive side. But for Oliver Berben, deputy CEO and deputy chairman of German production and distribution powerhouse Constantin Film, this is the golden age of international content production.

I love situations where everything is questioned and I think for us working in a creative business, to be in a situation where you’re not sure is a good thing because you question yourself constantly. Rebel Wilson's latest project, an Amazon series titled Lol: Last One Laughing, already has us cackling into our morning coffees. The six-episode comedy series (which was filmed in 2019) is being touted as a "comedic social experiment" and involves 10 Australian comedians being locked in a house together for a six-hour competition that has no rules. Oh, except one: if they laugh, they're cut.
Each comedian will participate in a series of skits where they can say and do whatever they like, except laugh. If a comedian laughs softly, they'll receive a yellow card violation (just like in football). A second offense will earn the comedian a red card elimination, and they'll be eliminated from the game and miss out on $100,000 cash prize.
If you're not familiar with the Australian comedy scene, you'll just have to trust me when I say that you're in for a treat. With Rebel Wilson as host,...

Marcus Gillezeau, an International Digital Emmy and Aacta Award-winning independent producer, writer and Ep, suggests Australia needs a ‘whole-of-country’ approach to reap the benefits of the streaming age.
The launch of Disney + and Apple TV+ this month have landed bang in the middle of the annual Screen Producers Australia (Spa) conference, Screen Forever. Independent producers attending will undoubtedly be keen to know if Disney and Apple, along with the other major studio streamers, are likely to increase production expenditure in Australia.
The back-to-back announcements of AppleTV+’s Shantaram , Netflix’s Clickbait, Amazon’s comedy series Lol: Last One Laughing and 10-part stand-up special certainly point to significant opportunity. However, some are asking whether these productions are a genuine sign of things to come or just a handful of ad-hoc one-offs.
The existing streaming landscape in Australia provides a staggering array of choice, both free and paid.
Marcus Gillezeau, an International Digital Emmy and Aacta Award-winning independent producer, writer and Ep, suggests Australia needs a ‘whole-of-country’ approach to reap the benefits of the streaming age.
