From Pixar making us cry our hearts out to Studio Ghibli leaving us depressed with Grave of the Fireflies, the medium of animation is no stranger to tugging at one’s heartstrings. And similar is the case with Bruce Timm’s magnum opus, responsible for the definitive version of Batman. While full of action, which is expected from the superhero genre, Batman: The Animated Series doesn’t shy away from pulling one’s heartstrings during the show’s more emotional bits.
Reflecting on such scenes, the animator recalled the time he was sobbing like a baby during one of the most gut-wrenching scenes in the show.
Robin’s Reckoning Left Bruce Timm Sobbing During Production
Batman: The Animated Series | Fox Kids
Amidst displaying the brooding vigilante at its top, Btas also succeeds in leaving fans on the verge of tears, most apparent with Heart of Ice, which changed how fans perceived Mr. Freeze.

This article contains spoilers for Smallville.
There’s no doubt that Lois (Erica Durance) and Clark (Tom Welling) were the right endgame for Smallville. And not just because Lois and Clark almost always inevitably end up together. Their years of loathing turning to respect and then love makes for some great TV, and Durance and Welling’s chemistry is incredible. However, even though Smallville mostly hit the mark with Clark’s love-life by the end of the series, his first love, Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), deserved so much better than the arc she was given.
By the time Clark and Lana get together in the series, Lana already knows that something is up with Clark. He’s somehow always there to save her when she’s in danger or just generally involved with all of the weird stuff going on in town. His farm boy charms also aren’t really...

The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. Overall, it was the icing on the cake of a refreshingly entertaining edition of the Oscars – one of the best in years.
Right off the bat it was pretty amusing, Jimmy Kimmel made some pretty fun digs in his opening monologue, including some references to Robert Downey Jr’s checkered history (which he was happy to play along to) and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s genetic perfection (he ain’t wrong). One man is preparing for a “quite unbelievable” Oscars night, having found himself nominated three times this year in the same category.
Special effects supervisor Neil Corbould is up against himself twice over, after being recognised in the category for his work on three movies – Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, The Creator and Napoleon.
Corbould has two previous Oscars to his name – for Gladiator and Gravity. He told the BBC that this year’s close-to-hand competition could be “the kiss of death,” and said:
“I might have three seats and have to play musical chairs!” The best part? “I get invited to three different after parties.”
Corbould has been working in the film industry for nearly five decades, having followed his uncle into special effects. Colin Chilvers previously won an Oscar himself, for his work on the 1978 movie Superman. He also worked on The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Condorman...

A new rumor regarding Rebecca Ferguson’s character from Mission Impossible has been making the rounds on the internet. And unlike most rumors, it is about a topic that has been publically discussed and even reported on extensively: Why did Ilsa Faust have to die in the Mission Impossible franchise?
Ethan Hunt and Ilsa Faust
Rebecca Ferguson played the character of Ilsa Faust from Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation to Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part 1, in which she was killed. While the reason for the choice has been made public, a new rumor has been circulating, potentially pointing towards some behind-the-scenes drama that could have caused Ferguson to lose the role, rather than Faust’s death being a narrative necessity.

In a surprising move, Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie has parted ways with his entire representation team. He has cut ties with his agents at CAA, Key Creatives manager Ken Kamins and attorney David Fox, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
He is now repped by Matt Galsor of Greenberg Glusker, who also happens to be Tom Cruise’s attorney.
The move is causing waves, as his team had been with him for years as he climbed the ranks from screenwriter to Cruise collaborator and franchise filmmaker. McQuarrie was an almost unstoppable force until this past summer’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, which Hollywood had high hopes for in light of 2022 hit Top Gun: Maverick, which McQuarrie produced and co-wrote, as well as in light of the well regarded previous installment, Mission: Impossible Fallout.

Healthy consumer demand for feature films after their theatrical release windows drove a 17% rise in home entertainment spending in 2023, according to the Digital Entertainment Group.
A preliminary version of the Deg’s annual survey of spending was released Tuesday, with the final one due in March. It found spending across digital and physical home entertainment formats in 2023 reached $43 billion, up from $36.8 billion in 2022. While film transactions were robust, with blockbusters like Oppenheimer spurring demand across digital and physical sectors, the Deg warned that the dual strikes could have an “adverse impact” on results in “the next few quarters.”
Subscription streaming, the Deg reported, citing data from UK-based research firm Omdia, surged more than 21% year-over-year to top $37 billion. The category dwarfed video on demand (VOD) and electronic sell-thru (Est), with the ranks of major subscription services having swelled just prior to and during the pandemic. Looking at PVOD and Netflix charts this week reveals some significant findings.
The just-debuted “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” tops all lists in its first week of release as assumed. That comes 90 days after its release. Did theaters benefit? Not really.
Netflix has a top 10 with eight studio titles, six from Universal, including #1 “Tammy” with Melissa McCarthy. But the big news here? “Fair Play,” last week’s #1 and a $20 million Sundance acquisition for the streamer, dropped off the list after only eight days.
Both suggest a result that could influence future decisions. For “Reckoning,” the hope was that delaying its initial home release 90 days would extend its theatrical run. That didn’t happen.
In the 30 days up to its PVOD release, it grossed less than $2 million in theaters. This year, only a handful of films have had a 60 days or longer window, most at close to that time.

She always thought composing music for an entire film in Bollywood would mean extremely high pressure and working in a somewhat corporate structure. However, Zeb Bangash, the first Pakistani artist to serve as music director of a Bollywood film – ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ – recalls it felt more like “coming home”.
Stressing that the movie was very special as there was a real sense of creating something new, and carving out a space that was absent before, she recalls: “Alankrita Anvita, Ankur Mukherjee, Amrit Mahajan and I shared and carried that sentiment with us. It really was like finding a community. Meetings were held, not in production houses but in homes over food and music, jokes, and poetry.”
Lamenting the current non-exchange of artists between India and Pakistan, she says for her, it is not about opportunities lost vis-a-vis audiences and markets, but the fact that it shrinks an artistic community.

If you had a gun to your head and had to answer candidly, what would you say is the best action movie franchise of the 21st century? While John Wick is quickly climbing the ranks and a real argument for the Fast and Furious can be made, when it comes to jaw-dropping stunts and eye-popping setpieces that continue to get better each time out, it’s hard to top what Tom Cruise has been able to achieve with the Mission: Impossible franchise. Indeed, while early results from directors like Brian De Palma and John Woo might be varied, Tom Cruise has remained the one constant and used his superstar wattage to help everyone from JJ Abrams to Brad Bird retain his own stamp while improving the overall quality of the franchise. With that in mind, the collaboration between Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie has catapulted the Mission Impossible Franchise...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Challenge: USA Season 2 Episode 3 “Civil War.”] It was a short return to a version of The Challenge for one of the USA Season 2 players. Paulie Calafiore, who was on the CBS show for Big Brother, has competed in three seasons of The Challenge already, over on MTV. And it was after only three episodes that Paulie was sent home, after facing off against teammate Bananas in an elimination that saw them stand on blocks of ice, throwing beanbags at targets to turn fire on under each other’s, and hold up their arms to keep a bucket of fish guts from falling. Here, Paulie talks about returning to the competition, what didn’t quite sit right about his position ...

Last year’s Best Narrator Emmy contest was a real clash of the titans as three-time champion David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) attempted to fend off famously charismatic first-timer Barack Obama (“Our Great National Parks”). Now that the former U.S. president has one victory under his belt, he is immediately seeking a second for another Netflix series, “Working: What We Do All Day.” This time, he faces an entirely different slate of challengers who could very well make this outing even more difficult.
Those competing against Obama for the 2023 narration prize are returning nominees Angela Bassett (“Good Night Oppy”) and Morgan Freeman (“Our Universe”) and category newcomers Mahershala Ali (“Chimp Empire”) and Pedro Pascal (“Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World”). Collectively, the professional actors have previously vied for 14 Emmys across 10 categories.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One topped the weekend box office chart with a five-day debut of $80 million in North America, including $56.2 million for the weekend proper.
The Paramount and Skydance pic is the latest summer tentpole to come in behind expectations. Heading into the weekend, the movie — starring Tom Cruise — had been tracking to open to $90 million or more domestically for the five days.
Dead Reckoning boasts the second best domestic opening of the franchise behind Mission: Impossible II, which posted a five-day debut of $78.5 million, not adjusted for inflation. The new Mission: Impossible installment opened Wednesday in order to give the film more runway before Barbie and Oppenheimer open July 21.
So far, older adults are fueling Dead Reckoning, with 22 percent of all ticket buyers in the 55 or older bracket. The well-reviewed movie earned an A CinemaScore from audiences.
Overseas, Dead Reckoning opened to $155 million for a global bow of $235 million.

This article contains a whole lot of Mission: Impossible 7 spoilers.
Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise’s third Mission: Impossible collaboration might just be the breeziest three hours you’ll ever spend in a cinema. It’s certainly the most exhilarating of this summer’s action spectacles, which are almost uniformly longer than 150 minutes, and nearly every one of them feels it. But Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the exception, a film as nimble and lithe as its title is long and unwieldy. It gallops through giddy set pieces like Cruise sprinting across the rooftop of the Dubai airport; and when Pom Klementieff laughs as she drives an SUV down the actual Spanish Steps of Rome, you’ll be cackling too.

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
On September 6, 2020, the first day of principal photography on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise drove a motorbike off a mountain. Specifically, he drove a custom-made Honda Crf 250 off a purpose-built ramp on the side of Norway’s Helsetkopen mountain, a vertiginous rock face sat some 1,200 meters above sea level. Then he plunged 4,000 feet into the ravine below before opening his parachute barely 500 feet from the ground.
When he landed, director, Christopher Mc Quarrie, and the small crew of his Mission co-stars who had assembled to watch the seminal cinematic sequence from the safety of video village, breathed a collective sigh of relief. Then Cruise picked himself up and did it all again another seven times, just to make sure the footage was perfect.

Can Tom Cruise save summer?
Despite the onslaught of shiny product that hasn’t delivered, i.e. Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the summer domestic box office at $2.1 billion per Comscore is pacing 6% behind last year’s for the period of May 1 to July 9.
All eyes are on the best reviewed Mission: Impossible of all-time, Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One to hopefully get us on a July roll starting Wednesday with an expected franchise global 5-day record of $250M; made up of $90M domestic, and $160M abroad in 70 markets including Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Mexico Spain, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.
There is a great potential for upside here, not just because of the Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% certified fresh, but also because a Top Gun: Maverick halo effect is expected to work in the favor of the seventh Mission: Impossible.

With “The Flash” (Warner Bros. Discovery) taking in a promising $9.7 million in Thursday previews (hoping to reach $70 million) while “Elemental” (Disney) grossed only $2.4 million, this weekend is perhaps the summer’s most critical for two of the brands that define franchise filmmaking.
However compelling those results might be, we’re already distracted by the upcoming drama of July 21, opening date for both “Oppenheimer” (Universal) and “Barbie” (Wbd) — and the battleground for ongoing IMAX screening of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1” (Paramount), which opens the week prior. As box-office battles go, this one will be hard to beat in 2023.
It’s too soon for audience tracking, but not to gauge industry expectations. There is a chance that the top three for the weekend of July 21 may be “Reckoning” #1, “Barbie” #2, and “Oppenheimer” #3 — but that would also be a misleading index. Here’s why.

Top Gun: Maverick to MI7: Dead Reckoning: Charles Parnell Describes Working with Boss Man Tom Cruise
Actor Charles Parnell starred with Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick and he followed him to the set of Cruise's next blockbuster Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 and Part 2 to once again play an authoritative figure with that great baritone voice. However, you can also catch the actor guest star in a different type of role on NBC's Grand Crew. Parnell tells CineMovie he's rarely cast as a comedic actor but he gets his chance to be silly on the latest episode of the NBC/Peacock series.

Puscifer have unveiled a new version of “Apocalyptical” as re-imagined by Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
The 11-minute song arrives a day before the release of Puscifer’s Existential Reckoning: Rewired — a track-by-track reworking of their 2021 album by “friends and members of the larger Pusciforce family.”
Here, the duo of Reznor and Ross shoot “Apocalyptical” through the lens of their own musical style, adding arpeggiated synthesizers and a primarily electronic backdrop of extended dance beats. If not for the recognizable vocal stems — which are drenched in effects — it could easily be mistaken as an original Reznor-Ross composition.
“Sometimes it’s just fun to break stuff,” said Puscifer’s Maynard James Keenan of the re-imagined versions. “Then you latch on to one familiar piece and build something entirely new.”
Existential Reckoning: Re-Wired continues Puscifer’s tradition of following a studio album with a track-by-track remix album.

In the fourth and latest episode of "Andor," "Aldhani," viewers got another look at the inside and outside of a new "Star Wars" ship, piloted by Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård). It's the same ship we saw at the very end of the third episode, "Reckoning," but Luthen and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) were in such a hurry to get off Andor's planet, Ferrix, that they didn't have much time to stop and admire the ship's design. However, the inside of the cockpit somewhat resembles that of the most famous "Star Wars" ship of them all, the Millennium Falcon. And when Andor and Luthen set down on a new grassy planet, the titular Aldhani, in episode four, things have calmed down a little and we have a few more seconds to see the outside of the ship.
It turns out the ship's design may have borrowed a few elements from some...

How well do you know your "Andor" cast? The latest "Star Wars" streaming series has drawn comparisons to the work of more than one 19th-century novelist, with /Film's own Lyvie Scott likening it to "Les Miserables" in space, and "Andor" showrunner Tony Gilroy describing the show's cast as "a huge, orchestral, Dickensian ensemble." The first three episodes of "Andor," which dropped last Wednesday, introduce us to new "Star Wars" planets like Ferrix and plenty of new faces as well.

England. 1665. The great plague has caused a frenzy of fear, distrust and death. Desperate and terrified, the population turns to superstition, the Catholic Church taking cruel advantage of the grim witch-hunting opportunities presented. Recently widowed Grace Haverstock is at her wit’s end when her landlord attempts to force her into paying debts with sexual favours. Her refusal means she must face horrific interrogations at the hands of Britain’s most ruthless Witchfinder General. But she is not alone. And her journey won’t end here without a reckoning.
I’m going to be honest, the name Neil Marshall doesn’t seem to carry the same kudos is once had, especially after many fans felt his Hellboy adaptation lacklustre. However I am in the opposite camp… I truly enjoyed...

Worse things have happened to Oscar winners, but it’s still unfortunate to see both Richard Dreyfuss and Mira Sorvino flailing in the inept muddle of “Crime Story.” Playing a semi-estranged father and daughter thrown into crisis mode over a few hours’ course following a home robbery, the stars are not exactly at their best here.
But then the odds are sharply stacked against them, as writer-director Adam Lipsius’ film has the feel of an enterprise whose script wasn’t quite ready for “action!”: Half the dialogue sounds haplessly improvised, with sporadic voiceover narration coming off as an equally forlorn attempt to belatedly cohere a half-baked whole. Such things do not a taut crime thriller make, and “Story” (previously promoted as both “”The Last Job” and “Reckoning”) also fails as a rather maudlin dysfunctional-family drama, among other things. Saban Films is opening the feature in 10 U.S. cities this Friday,...

Fall will creep in before we know it and so will the scary movies.
“Malignant” is the latest creation from “Conjuring” universe architect James Wan. The film marks director Wan’s return to his roots with this new original horror thriller.
In the film, Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
“Malignant” stars Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young (TV’s “Containment”), Michole Briana White, Jacqueline McKenzie, Jake Abel and Ingrid Bisu.
In an interview with IGN, “Wan calls Malignant a blend of several genres. “It’s horror, but it’s also a traditional thriller. It’s psychological, it’s serial killer, but it’s also potentially a monster movie.” This brings us back to Gabriel and the question of who or what they are. “My goal was to create a villain...

HBO's expansion of the world of Game of Thrones continues.
The streamer has added two more stars to the cast of the forthcoming prequel, House of the Dragon.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Milly Alcock is set to play a younger version of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Described as “the king’s first-born child, she is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragon rider. Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything… but she was not born a man.”
The grown-up version of the character is played by Emma D’Arcy in the series.
Also joining the cast is Emily Carey (Casualty) as a younger version of Alicent Hightower, described as “the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms."
"She was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his innermost circle; she possesses both a courtly...

The Amazon pilot “The Horror of Dolores Roach” has added three new cast members, Variety has learned exclusively.
Alejandro Hernandez, Kita Updike, and K. Todd Freeman have all joined the Blumhouse Television and Spotify-produced pilot alongside previously announced lead Justina Machado.
The project, based on the Spotify podcast of the same name, was first announced as being in development at Amazon back in May. In the show, “Magic Hands” Dolores Roach (Machado) is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely-gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, her apartment now occupied by strangers, Dolores finds respite in the dilapidated storefront Empanada Loca around the corner, the only remnant of her former life.

If you have read the synopsis for A Reckoning you’d be forgiven for thinking you might have seen this movie before. It reads ‘After her husband is brutally murdered, a widowed homesteader seeks revenge and leaves everything behind to hunt down his killer.’ Very similar sounding to the brilliant The Nightingale from director Jennifer Kent. I will more than likely be mentioning that movie again in this review.
It’s not always essential to have action throughout, even if a movie is labeled as some kind of revenge thriller. A slow burn is sometimes the way to go but A Reckoning does feel like a very slow movie despite coming in at a little under eighty minutes. There are lots of scenes of the lead character Mary O’ Malley just silently...
