Great adaptation, but not from the Books!
selketentr21 January 2019
I have criticized the storyline of some episodes in the past; however, this story was brilliant. The books are wordy and I imagine very difficult to trim down and still advance the story for TV. Although most of this story did not happen in the books, this episode showcased the acting of every character... Brianna, Steven Bonnet, John Grey, Fergus, Roger, the Priest and the Mohawk Indians were all fantastic. This episode was a real tear jerker. I enjoyed every part of it. I hope Roger is finally rescued...I didn't like his story nor did I care for his story in the books either... and I hope we don't lose any characters in the season finale.

Breathtaking episode!
kevscratch-932-59594230 January 2019
This was the best episode of fantastic series yet! To think that Jamie and Claire, our fabulous lead characters, were not even in it! This shows how well written and acted this series is. The final torture scene in the Mohawk Village was breathtaking in its power and emotion. I have never seen a TV show have such quality of acting, sets, and the use of music as this one. The entire season 4 has been a wonderful experience, with wonderful character development and superb acting from all cast members. Why this series has not won a truckload of Emmys baffles me. Bravo to the entire production team, and especially to our beloved actors!

Thank God for Outlander!
asfan-8866020 January 2019
I've been reading the books since 1991 when they first came out. I know some feel like they should stick closer to the books but I think they way they have filmed it is amazing! I love Roger and Lord John's characters! The actors are phenomenal and I can't wait until season 5!

One scene made it a 10 for me.

Warning: Spoilers
There is a lot to like about this episode but, the scene where the Indian woman ran to the pyre to die with her love gutted me and made me sob. There are a lot of sad things that's have happened in this series but that one was so powerful and disturbingly beautiful as an act of love that I had to give this episode a 10.

Fantastic
SoriRC20 January 2019
Isn't still over, but with an episode left I need to say that they (whole cast) have made an incredible job with Season 4. I'm enjoying every second of each episode. Everyone's acting is marvelous. Sorry-not-sorry, to ain't able to find something wrong on it. As an Outlander book fan, It's been perfect to me.

Comparison of the book and show
amanda_parsons23 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I think the previous reviews covered a lot of it, but I thought I would share a few more things I noticed. The addition of Murtagh does mean a few things need to be changed. Fergus and Marsali along with the regulators are never involved. In the books, Bonnet only pretends to be chained when talking to Brianna and his people come to rescue him. During that rescue ,Lord John is stabbed and it is Bonnet who persuades Brianna to escape with him and he drags Lord John out with him. Once they are within safety, he gives her a diamond from his mouth for the baby. They did keep a lot of the dialogue between Bonnet and Brianna. On the reserve, Roger and the Father do meet. The Mohawk do refer to Roger as Dogface. Most of what you see is true, but disneyified a bit. The two lovers do perish together, but I don't recall Roger being able to escape or returning to throw fire on the priest. Unlike others, I don't mind that Claire and Jamie aren't in this episode as there is large parts of the book where they don't appear. I think for the most part they should be able to finish what transpired in the book by the finale. There's really one or two major points that need to be covered. Then there is a third subplot that should be easy enough to slide in. We shall see. I did find the ending and Roger's scenes in particular really heartbreaking. I love the actor for Lord John.

Lord John To The Rescue!
nancywarren21 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Another fantastic episode and with just a few exceptions, right from the book! Lord John informs Bree that Stephen Bonnet has been captured in Wilmington and is sentenced to hang. Lord John is aghast when Bree asks if he'll bring her to meet with Bonnet. Once she shares the heartfelt letter from Jamie who told her she must find the grace of forgiveness for her soul as well as her life, Lord John agrees to make the arrangements. After they arrive in Wilmington, Bree was understandably nervous about what she intends to do. Lord John was so patient and understanding while she worked through her fears and then took her by the arm as they proceeded to the jailhouse. I absolutely loved it when Bree said to him, "It's impossible not to like you!" The scene between Bree and Bonnet was excellent. Her resolve was strong and she didn't let him rattle her. In fact, I think she actually got to him as we actually saw a glimpse of humanity from Bonnet! Now that's grace! Of course timing is everything because right as Lord John and Bree are leaving, Fergus and the Regulators are there to break Murtaugh out (and Marcelli is outside with the getaway wagon!) Oh and the jail house is about to explode!!! Everyone gets away safely and Lord John even tells the jail official that they didn't see anything. Poor Roger is still struggling at the Mohawk Village and we see how much a toll these last few months have taken on him not just physically but emotionally as well. Claire, Jamie, and Ian better get there quickly and free Roger because it looks like Bree could have that baby any time now! I don't know how they'll do it, but I can't wait to see the finale!

The most irrelevant episode
doomprodigy22 January 2019
I hate reviewing this show less than a 9 as I love it so much, but this season has been a wasted effort and this episode adds to that. This whole season should have been about Brianna and Rogers journey to finding eachother and then Claire and Jamie, but instead we've been through dull side stories that go no where and nothing exciting. The writers have really let us down.

This episode, the 2nd before the finally, did nothing but tell you who the villain was. It did not further the story in any way and its heartbreaking. The only saving grace was the shock factor in the ending and one of my favorites being rescued.

I didn't not even bother me that the main cast were not the focus of this episode, as i have mentioned this season should have been about Brianna and Roger. But the writers have failed us.

The rest was irrelevant, i really hope that the finale episode somehow redeems all the mistakes of the season, otherwise I fear the show may suffer the same fate as Scotland.

I still love it, still optimistic and all is well :)

Roger said a mouthful. This whole story line with Brianna is a painful waste of time.

This storyline seems to be taking absolutely forever. I don't know if i can cope with another episode of Roger trying to escape. And that priest with his ear. And his feet. One episode left, please god can it be resolved!! 😫

Where's Jamie and Claire?
annapicazzo21 January 2019
We only saw one scene with Jamie in it and Claire was MIA. I honestly hate the Roger plot line and this episode was mostly about that. I haven't read the books and I can only guess this is what happens in them but we needed Claire and Jamie. I think this is the only episode in which they are left out of the picture. I do love Brianna's character, she's so brave and it was nice to see more of Fergus' storyline.

Seen better. What happened to the story?
anagalilea20 January 2019
I actually do not know what happened to the entire series. It is as if their soul is been taken out. Became predictable, boring, slow, cliché. RR is no san heughan and anything outside Europe feels very fake

So annoying

Warning: Spoilers
Brianna is so annoying, pompous and bothersome.

Having to watch the full episode of her whining and not able to see Claire leaves me wanting more and I hope there will be more beyond her.

Native Americans?
Mtdew7221 February 2019
I'm shocked at the reviews for season four, which is simply not the quality of the first three seasons. I guess shooting these scenes in .scotland meant they couldn't find real Native American actors? Shameful.

Hats off to Roger
marit-4405729 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Lord John, Fergus, Marsali, Bonnet, heck even Brianna were all great this episode. But I really thought that Richard Rankin knocked it out of the park as Roger this episode, he cracked me up with his "idiot" lines, and really brought the emotion as well.

Props as well to Yan Tual, Braeden Clarke, and Carmen Moore - I may not share the Father's religious conviction regarding baptism and wanted to smack him, but that final scene was heartbreaking.

That's all I have to say, but as there is a bewildering minimum word count required, I'll also mention that they did an admirable job of blowing up the jail with impeccable accuracy.

Providence

Warning: Spoilers
We'll see what happens because the Stephen Bonnet character shouldn't go out this way. A good episode though, even if the blowing up the jail bit seems farfetched.

A fun and different hour which is good to see.

Puzzling
jmansmannstjohnslrev29 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Puzzling, that's what this episode was to me, puzzling. I am a bit biased, this part of Drums of Autumn was least favorite, but Roger's storyline in particular with the Mohawk seems to drag on alot longer in the tv series than it did in the books. This episode was just odd, especially the entire Mohawk portion of the episode. I don't understand what the purpose was either. Roger MacKenzie is so incredibly betrayed in Season 4, and the showrunners have dragged the character through the mud and in this episode, relish in his suffering as he is beaten to a pulp. I guess my main problem with it is that again, book Roger never had a question about returning to Brianna at this point in the story. He felt terrible about leaving her in Wilmington and was hell bent on returning. I hate how Roger was made to be so selfish in Season 4. This was the guy who believed Claire's story, who searched for Jaime without any thought of reward. Now he's giving speeches about looking out for #1.

While I can understand why he might feel that way, it's his own selfishness that made him lose Brianna in the first place. Again unlike the book, his reasons for keeping the news about Brianna's parents to himself was selfish, he wanted her to be happy so she would marry him. It's just sad that Season 4 tarnishes Roger so badly and makes him unrecognizable from the source material.

With respect to Brianna's side of the story, I understand why Brianna went to see Bonnet, both in the tv series and books. It does match real life, how victims often confront and forgive their assailants, but it always kind of felt out of place to me.

This was just incredibly odd and I can't understand why this episode received the praise that it did. It was incredibly strange...

Nothing left
lucidorb20 July 2019
One episode to go and season 4 is over. This is not clear in this epiaode. There is plenty to know and watch in the finale. Hopefully, the y didn't pack all the events in the final episode or transfer them to season 5.

Horrible
heydiddlediddle00722 January 2019
The only reason I gave it such a high score is because I watched the entire episode. This isn't the Outlander of season 1 and 2. This season and this episode in particular is so poorly acted. I know they're adding new characters and branching out but seriously this is just stupid. Brianna is increasingly pompous and annoying and Roger doesn't have an active brain cell, they make a perfect couple. The only character in this episode that seemed remotely "Outlanderish" was Marsali. I can't see myself investing in season 5, so very disappointing.

Yet another ruined episode
schmittinger8320 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
They are wasting so much time with Murtah who died at the end of the first book! Marsali and Fergus lived on Fraser's RIdge and Lizzie stayed with them while Brianna was a Aunt Jucasta's, therefore, Fergus had nothing to do with Stephen Bonnet's escape. In the book, Roger's foot was cut and infected, here his arm is in a sling. There is so much left in the book at this point and they only have one episode left...that should be a real butcher job next week! So disappointing, that they can take these great novels and turn them into this.

Seriously, I can't understand why they ruined this series. I guess the 10 ratings are from the movie staff or something.
