Motty: The Man Behind the Sheepskin
Prismark1028 February 2023
Originally broadcast as a tribute to John Motson who called it a day as a football commentator for the BBC in 2018.

It was reshown when Motson died in February 2023 at the age of 77.

Motty as he was known to his colleagues became one of the voices of televised football from the 1970s onwards. Along the likes of Brian Moore and Barry Davies.

He covered over 2500 matches, 10 world cups and countless finals. During the winter he would be a familiar sight with his sheepskin jacket.

Here was a chance to get to know the man a little before he hung up the microphone one last time.

Motty was a man known for his through preparation, ably assisted by his wife. Something his colleagues sometimes mocked but very much appreciated.

It was heartening to learn that he became close friends with some of the footballers. He might have fallen out with a few managers but they later became friends quickly afterwards.

The most amusing part was that Motty also did some boxing commentary. One time with Muhammad Ali as the summariser, who then left him so he could go and mock Joe Bugner who just won his fight.

The saddest part was John Motson was present during the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy.

Nowadays with some football commentators getting hysterical and trying to make a drama out of everything. Motty's authoritative voice will be much missed.
