Despite this children's cartoon clearly intending to be a Saturday morning show, it doesn't shy away from delivering a deep emotional impact when it wants to.
This updated version of Ducktales is spot on, funny, entertaining and all around pretty freaking good!
David Tennant as Scrooge McDuck is terrific. His nephews Huey, Dewy and Louie all have distinct personalities and haircuts apart from their different coloured clothing, and the female characters Webby and Mrs Beakley are far more assertive, hands on and three-dimensional than the old version.
They go on several interesting adventures together, solving many mysteries. But the most important intreaguing and important one is what happened to the boy's mother, Della Duck?
In this episode we find out exactly why Scrooge refuses to talk about his beloved niece's disappearance. We also see that behind the cynical, angry miser facade he always displays is a deeply hurt soul, often misunderstood and riddled with guilt.
I've always loved Scrooge, as he is an enigmatic, complicated character - a rare treat in this type of children's animation.
The last few seconds of this episode are probably the most heart-wrenching things I've seen in a series like this.
I do wish this would be turned into a movie one day. With the right people involved it could be an absolute emotional, but fun ride.
