Powerful but Incomplete
makleen29 December 2019
I watched Adam Carolla and Dennis Prager's new documentary No Safe Spaces (2019) in a nearly-sold out theater in Alexandria, VA. While it was a decent summery of the latest threats to freedom of speech and expression, and the audience loved it, there were some glaring omissions that left the film feeling incomplete.

If you've been paying attention over the past several years, you've noticed the rise in political activism on both the right and left has led to some alarming developments, including riots, street clashes, and an effort to "de-platform" opposing views on the Internet. No public space has been at the forefront of this conflict more than college campuses.

No Safe Spaces highlights two of the most dramatic episodes of campus activism and political correctness run amok: Bret Weinstein and the 2017 Evergreen State College riots, and the 2016 riots at California State University that targeted conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro.

Bret Weinstein, then a politically liberal biology professor, objected to his college administration asking white students and faculty not to come onto campus for a "Day of Absence" event. Campus security stood down in the face of student protests and a court eventually awarded Weinstein $500,000 in damages for the college failing to protect his safety. Footage of protestors shouting down administrators and forcing a student to read a public apology for speaking with Weinstein is an alarming glimpse at a possible future.

No Safe Spaces isn't confined to politically-correct attacks on freedom of speech and expression on college campuses. It touches on comedy as well, featuring interviews with comedians like Tim Allen and Bryan Callen. Noticeably absent was comedian Joe Rogan, whose popular podcast has spread popular awareness of many of the film's events. Rogan has interviewed members of the "intellectual dark web" like Sam Harris, Eric Weinstein (brother of Bret Weinstein), Jordan Peterson, Dave Rubin, Ben Shapiro, and Christina Hoff Sommers, all of whom have faced campus protests and have the same general objections to political correctness.

The documentary also featured clips from Van Jones and Barack Obama promoting free exchange of ideas on college campuses and speaking out against censorship. Van Jones briefly served as President Obama's Special Advisor for Green Jobs in 2009 and is now a CNN commentator. Contrary to what most critics claim is a one-sided film, I thought No Safe Spaces went out of its way to include liberal and left-wing perspectives.

What it didn't include, however, was a discussion of the origins of political correctness and the madness that has infected college campuses. It briefly touches on how the University of California, Berkeley, birthplace of the 1964 Free Speech Movement, has become an epicenter for politically-correct student activism. But how did it get from A to B? Who is teaching these students to react with violence in the face of opposing views?

That discussion, even a brief overview, would have been more useful than a cartoon of the First Amendment being shot up or reenactments of Adam Carolla's childhood.

As No Safe Spaces points out, tolerance for opposing views has not been the norm throughout human history, and the United States has its own checkered history with censorship. In 1835, for example, President Andrew Jackson banned the post office from delivering Abolitionist literature in the South. The ideal of a "marketplace of ideas" in which partisans respectfully debate opposing views and the best ideas win, is an ideal worth defending and promoting.

In my opinion, it's important for audiences to be aware of what's happening on college campuses and for this free speech argument to be heard, but as a film, No Safe Spaces comes up short. It features many low-quality clips from other interviews and YouTube channels, and its original content wastes vital minutes on Adam Carolla and Dennis Prager's personal stories. It is, however, a good starting point for anyone concerned about the future of free discussion in the United States.

The future is now in 2020

Made in 2019, this documentary accurately foresaw the madness we would see in 2020 due to extreme left politics.

Worrisome
jch_03124116 November 2019
Up front; I am both conservative and a Dennis a Prager fan. That said, I nearly walked out of the theatre early on when silly cartoon characters were used to make a point. I felt that it was condescending for the film makers to use this childish device for a film about a topic of such gravity.

Fortunately, as the film progressed, it revealed the extent of group thinking that has pervaded our society, particularly at our schools of higher learning.

Simply stated, it appears that there is absolute intolerance of any ideas or speech that do not comply with the "group thinking" that is demanded of students and faculty alike.

I left the theatre deeply concerned that nothing short of a miracle can overcome the momentum of this tyrannical level of disrespect for the rights of others to hold views differing from the group ideology.

I encourage others to see the film, but knowing beforehand that any answer to this malignant threat to liberty is most unwelcome at many of our universities.

Worrisome indeed!

Powerful, Intriguing and Impactful. A must see for anyone!

I read a lot of the "pro-conservative" aspects surrounding this movie, but that just scratches the surface. No Safe Spaces takes a deep dive into the potential harm America faces in regards to silencing our god given rights to free speech. It takes us throughout history and how important it is for our society to maintain our first amendment for EVERYONE, despite what side of the political aisle you sit. The film shows conservative speakers being threatened, abused and shouted down in order to silence them and universities indoctrinating our youth into not thinking for themselves. At the same time, it makes you think how lucky we are to be able to say what we want and what we feel without the fear of persecution and how we, as a society, need to protect this right. The film is done very well, and brings the audience an eye-opening experience about our rights as human beings that should never be infringed on. The theatre was packed and when the lights turned on most people had tears in their eyes, as did I and my date. The movie teaches us that it is important to listen, learn and understand each persons point of view and that we should never back down from speaking our minds. Only through dialogue, communication and respect for others will we ever be able to understand each individuals unique perspective, and No Safe Spaces emphasizes this perfectly. Do yourself a favor and go see this, it's powerful!

Don't trust the Critics
poopiter11 November 2019
It's better than some of the critics would have you believe. I've seen critiques of the film saying that it's basically counterproductive because the protesters the film condemns are actually exercising their freedom of speech as well. Ummmm, the CNN's and major networks would have you believe those were protesters but they were viscous anti-conservative rioting mobs. They tried to attack the speakers and physically force them to withdraw their speaking engagements. The weren't close to peaceful protesters, they were something you'd see in a 3rd world riot. Setting structures on fire, throwing bottles and rocks, it's crazy. Estimates range anywhere from 5 to 1 up to 12 to 1 liberal professors outnumber conservatives. These institutions have gone off the deep end and two sided discussions are considered an attack and offensive towards liberals yet conservative ideas are ganged up on. My girlfriends kids just started college and the stories they've got are terrifying. We need more movies like this.

A must see documentary
marshgeek27 October 2019
A B-list comedian and an old Jew walk into a room...

That statement should placate the haters..

This is an excellent documentary. We live in strange times when arguments, debate, and free speech are not allowed. This documentary tells several stories of people that had their free speech threatened.

Stories from the left and right. And the cartoons are cute.

I work hiring for a fortune 500. This film is hilarious and unfortunately true
random-7077820 November 2019
Note: One of the one star reviews of this, by "petercoolidge" suggests speech on campus is not a First Amendment issue since its one sided repression is not "government" oppression. I suggest peter retake civics 101. In fact most of the schools corolla has noted are GOVERNMENT institution, eg UC Berkely is. And any school that takes government funds (and they virtually all do) is in fact beholden to the Bill of Rights.

Moreover Corolla mainly addressing the gernal PC police culture of whining, crying, triggered culture that is now taught at many schools. If peter had watched the film, and it is clear he has not, he would know it isn't even mainly about the First Amendment. Rather it is about a cultural shift toward whining, agreement instead of achievement.

Fact is there is a powerful irony. This film literally could run as an advert on CNN or MSNBC and their idiot viewers thinking it was just a commercial for a school and not knowing it was a satire!

This movie is worth seeing simply to hear Jeffrey Epstein's lawyer, Alan Dershowitz, say "If you want to feel good, get a massage."

A collection of curated YouTube clips edited to say what you want to hear
barbrilectures8 June 2020
There is nothing new here. It is a series of clips that are available to the public that have been carefully edited to create a narrative that will make you feel good about yourself if you agree with the narrative. If you don't, you won't like it very much.

"Anti-Gay"?
kcspam15 November 2019
This is "anti-gay" according to one of the delusional 'reviewers'. Perhaps they should learn a little about Dave Rubin before spouting such garbage. Dave is a sensible, fair and well balanced man. More of a man than the combined manhood of a bus load of the beta-progressive 'men' we hear so much from today. And Dave is married to a man.

This is an excellent and important film that everyone should see.

Best Propaganda I've seen all week
babywyatt3031 October 2020
Very well done documentary. In short, America is turning into North Korea. No Safe Places makes a lot of valid points but in the end it's More Propaganda, no different from Leftist propaganda. You have never in the history of America been able to say whatever you want, to who you want. Well you can but there are consequences. You do it at work, it can be considered disrespect, harrassment or insubordination. Some Jobs you're not even allowed to swear lol. Outside of that you DO have the right to your opinion & to openly support whom ever you choose without people losing their marbles. You would think The Dems & Reps are battling for World Domination with the level of extremism in these documentaries & in Media.

Democratic party: We are Saints, we are righteous, We believe in free love & peace until you disagree with us.

Republicans: It is my God given right to disrespect Anyone I want at any given time & you shut up while I'm doing it. Also, THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!

I hate it here.

Right Wing Propaganda...
debrahnava-5249623 October 2020
So, if your into hearing a conservative slant on everything - this film is for you. It just seems 'they' only want their freedoms to go 1 way... their conservative way, since in their narrow minds it's the only right way. Freedom applies to everybody folks - and there lies their rub and I suppose their reasoning for this film. Don't bother unless your a Trumper, then you'll love it.

Must see film!
armyerrn28 October 2019
Adam Corolla has been bringing the truth to America for decades. With DR Drew Pinsky on KROQ and evolved into this perfect matching with Dennis Prager, No Safe Spaces. It opens up your eyes and goes way beyond what the media has tried to shape your beliefs into. It is the stark reality of the times and historically important for every American to understand the true situation and know that we are the cure. Well Done!! The snowflakes are melting and the liberals are loathing!

MUST See film for EVERY American!
rockymthi13 November 2019
America is the Safe Space for the world. When extreme leftist Marxist and anarchists start to brainwash college students against any form of individualism, dissent or debate, then our 1st Amendment is under attack. The way to fix this is to hurt these Universities in the are they value most -- money! This film does a great job of identifying the problem and pointing to solutions to overcome it.

Even I was surprised how good it Was!
shaw-tyler17 November 2019
Dennis Prager, Adam Carolla and Jordan Peterson are my three favorite thinkers and speakers. All together in one movie! My expectations were somewhat muted as I figured it might be a middling documentary despite those involved. I was blown away. It was compelling and very inspiring. The interviews and narrative were interesting and we'll laid out. I thought the Bill of Rights cartoon was embarrassing as the tone and quality didn't match the rest of the movie. Recommend for all. Bring your kids....bring other kids...bring everyone.

An important topic
daleut22 November 2019
This is not just entertainment. It is a documentary. In light of America's longstanding tradition of pushing children through the higher education system in order to realize fulfillment in life, this is essential information. The film documents how the culture of academia has been coopted by identity politics and political correctness, which is now spilling over into the larger culture as well.

jewelsrn1688 December 2019
A very decisive film!! Very well done!! A must see!! We need both side of the argument!! By trying to censor your critics is not the way to debate!! Dennis Prager and Adam Corolla and Jordan Peterson and Candace Owen and Ben Shapiro and Dave Rubin are fantastic in their speech and the way they are able to bring out the problem with not seeing both side of an argument!! I was very astonished at what's going on at some campuses and how they are stopping conservative speakers from speaking!! Main point. Go see this film no matter how you lean in politics!! It's really about the first amendment and how it's currently at stake!

All Americans need to see this, no matter what your political stance is. Freedom of speech, even speech we hate, is sacred. America must be a "safe space" where everyone has the freedom to openly debate and argue all viewpoints.

Right-Wing Drivel
CrimeChauncey5 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A movie about how rich conservative white men are so persecuted because they don't get to talk in front of a crowd on college campuses for money. Truly an impressively ignorant film made by and for the lowest common intellectual denominator. There's a reason why conservative ideas are shunned on campuses: they're stupid, useless, and a massive obstruction to conducting actual academic work. There's a section about how Adam Carolla doesn't benefit from white privilege because he's working class. Ever been shot by the police for no reason other than your skin color, Adam? This movie is a complete joke, which is why I gave it two stars and not one. Because it is such a joke, it is somewhat entertaining to watch and laugh at just how incredibly dumb it is. Get together with your pals, watch this, and just have a great time laughing at what complete idiots Adam Carolla, Dennis Prager, and every other hacky conservative loser that appears in this absolute waste of resources is.

Important film.
seanfett18 November 2019
I went to a screening of No Safe Spaces and Prager was there to do an intro. He was funny, he was light hearted but serious and extremely smart. This film is important and I hope people see it. It's funny and scary but mostly funny. I highly recommend NSS for all sides of the aisle. Freedom of speech is what makes this country the greatest country in the world. Treat yourself and a snowflake you know to this dope documentary.

Free speech is essential to freedom
connielynnhudgins8 December 2019
It was an excellent film at demonstrating why free speech is essential to keep America free. It also showed how prejudice the group-identity people have become towards anyone who doesn't agree with their point of view. They are also turning to violence in their pursuit to prove their group identities are best and they are becoming dangerous in their self-righteousness. The snowflakes do a lot of pointing their finger at others, but refuse to look in the mirror.
